Patron Version Video: Build TWO Sawbenches
Added 2023-10-14 11:00:04 +0000 UTC
Friends:
Last week, we learned to use a traditional sawbench for all those big, awkward cuts. But you can't use a sawbench until you build one. So today, we're going to build BOTH the English and the Swedish (not really Swedish) sawbenches.
Both builds are approachable and beginner-friendly and both use common lumber. Heck, I bet many of you already own the wood. So grab your basic tools and get to it! This video has all the details, along with EXCLUSIVE Patron Tips.
I posted the FREE Plans on Wednesday, but there was a small error. I've fixed the plans in that post and I've attached them to this post for your convenience.
I'm also happy to report that our Scholarship applications are up and running. The application thread is open on the forum and you can watch this video for more details and our fundraising totals.
Happy Saturday!

If you were going to build the Light weight traveler again, would you put the legs closer to the center so it makes a better sawbench? Would this make it much less stable?

Great as always, Rex. A suggestion came to mind while watching you work in the beginning. When you were planing the first face, then gauging to the other face and planing it, you go fast. I realized this is because you recently had a video about that whole process. But I remembered being new to all this and coming into videos that presumed prior knowledge and feeling lost. Even if not mentioned in-video, it might be good to make a point to have links to previous videos that are in-depth instruction on the techniques used, so someone who doesn't know the process could go watch that video for that step. You never know who and what experience level viewers are going to be when they come into a given build video.

Thanks Rex! These benches look great; is there a way you would use these benches for resawing as well, or is that still better done using a bench vice?

Yeah, I make no claim that my association is grounded in reality, I assure you.

Excellent! Now to clear out enough pace in my shop, and a path to my Joiners Bench so I can get started in building the first one !

I have to see how it will fit. I will have to cut out one of my holdfast holes, but I don't think I ever use the middle ones I've made. And I do like ketchup on my fries, although the best is Sriracha!

Awesome. I've been using the B&D workmate with the legs folded in for the low angle, but that has gotten old. I planned to make the quick stack bench first, but perhaps I'll make a saw bench first instead. Cheers!

The ripping notch is like ketchup on fries. You don't need it, but it sure does help!

Well, that's a double-win: you won't be able to put stuff on the saw bench and the saw bench will keep you from putting stuff under your workbench. It's already doing that for me.

I'm glad to hear it. I think most woodworkers need one of these.

Well, that's a connection I wouldn't have made, but I'm also a child of the 90s and I have some good memories of that band.

Great video! I have my short Low Roman, which is even more sutable after I gave it new legs like a mini Roubo (straight legs). I'm still considering whether I want to add a ripping notch or not.

Nice build video Rex. Still have to clean under my bench so I have a place to put these.

Thanks Rex. Couldn’t have been better timing for me to see these videos. I sat down to look up saw benches this morning and wouldn’t ya know it you were one step ahead of me.

Great video, of course. But made better because I can't *not* hear the title sung to the tune of Sublime's "Smoke Two Joints"
