Patron-Version Video: The Easy Moravian Stool

Friends:

Everyone seemed to enjoy my Moravian stool build, but I know that a lot of people aren’t ready to tackle that sliding dovetail. Well, good news: there’s a simpler version of this stool that’s equally traditional and still has the same charm and style as the more difficult version. With a few softwood scraps and a pile of screws, you can make your own Moravian in less time and with less cost.

This is the affordable, accessible woodworking that we specialize in and we’re excited to share this project with all of you.

Just like usual, the plans are being drawn now and they’ll be available (both here and on the Plan Archive) on Wednesday. And, of course, they’ll be FREE.

On a personal note, I’m heading back to CT to deal with an ongoing medical issue. My family is struggling through a difficult time. Everyone here has been very supportive and I appreciate that very much. This is truly a community that I’m proud to be a part of.

Thank you.

This is a little late, but I've been wondering do you have to worry about wood movement between the top and the battens? The grain are going in different directions but you still use screws and not nails to connect the top and the battens. I've been going back over your nailed furniture and wondering when screws are inappropriate

You're very kind to say so!

Thank you so much!

Rex Krueger

Yeah! Those early videos were rough!

Rex Krueger

That's my motto, too.

Rex Krueger

Honestly, that's a fascinating idea.

Rex Krueger

We appreciate it.

Rex Krueger

We appreciate your thoughts!

Rex Krueger

Glad you liked it!

Rex Krueger

That's true....but the stool is still pretty important.

Rex Krueger

Thank you so much!

The ax really does make short work of this stuff!

Rex Krueger

Family first indeed.

I almost did another FF on this trip, but there was no time. As to the fox wedge, it seems possible, but it's not common in these so I don't know.

Rex Krueger

I wish you all the luck with your build.

Rex Krueger

That's so apreciated!

Just the first 5 minutes of this video is full of golden nuggets of wisdom. I may have to watch this one a few times to absorb them all!

Always good to have multiple methods of construction to fit your circumstances. Thank you Rex and please take care of the family first. Best wishes for a good outcome to your situation.

Fantastic Rex! 👏 I’ve been following your channel for four years now. The other day I watched an older video I’ve overlooked, in which you build a railroad wine rack. It’s great to see how your production and presentation has evolved.😀

Kevin Hogg

Family first has always been my motto, you take care of you and yours.

Loved the new options for construction. Thanks! I had a minor epiphany when building a larger version of the cricket stool. Making a centered hole for a lifting handle actually puts the handle off center. When lifting it the bottom of the stool wants to "kick in" towards you, tipping the stool in your hand. I placed my handle hole offcenter by the width of the handle hole. Now when I pick up the stool the top stays relatively parallel to the floor. It's a minor improvement that makes picking up and repositioning the stool feel way more natural, since one is not compensating for the angling of the top and legs. No, it no longer looks symmetrical but ergonomically it is better. Just my two cents. Thanks for all you do.

Take all the time you need. Family Comes First! Healing thoughts.

Thanks, Rex! You're the Rex around here! Much love and support to you and the family.

Thomas Hverring

Great video. Take care.

Thinking of you and your family, which is more important than this stool

Safe travels and good outcomes, Rex

Shades of Roy Underhill. He believed in using an ax for stock preparation. But then he’d start with a log. I have some oak pieces but I think I’ll cheat and use a band saw. (Oak is hard and I don’t have any subscribers to please.) Otherwise, lots of juicy tips. I’ll have to replay this video a few more times to move them to long term memory. Safe travels and my thoughts are with you.

So sorry to hear about your family's difficulties. As always, don't worry about getting videos out - family first.

Michael Carman

Safe travels, and best wishes for your family. If you have time, another Forensic Furniture video from the homestead would be great, but family first. Do you think a fox wedge (hidden wedge) would work for those legs?

Brian Taylor

Thanks Rex! I built a couple of your 2x4 3 Legged Stools a couple of years back, one of them is still in use in the garage/workshop, the other got left behind when we moved house because we couldn't fit it in the car when we finally left the house - I keep thinking I ought to build another, but have to say I think I prefer this one! Hope the family situation resolves positively.

Rob Weir

Thank you for always doing these videos! My family is praying for yours.
