Friends:

The bench is up on its legs and in this part, I'll fit the apron. As usual, more pictures in the discussion forum thread

Should have another update tomorrow!

Behind the Scenes: Minimum Timber Bench Pt 3.

Comments

The rigidity is kinda amazing! Making me think the two year delay in making my bench is going to pan out!

Todd Maurer

Nice job, T.

Loving the behind the scenes content. It really gives a more personal aspect for patrons. Thank you for going that much further on top of what you already do.

For nearly 40 years I used power tools. Over the last 3 years I have largely converted to using hand tools. I am not a purist and so have given much thought to when using power tools is most appropriate. Power tools I plan on keeping are the bench top surface planer, the band saw, and the power compound miter saw for making compound angle cuts. The table saw is the big question. This tool is a bagan with the devil. It is loud, creates very fine saw dust, and just extremly dangeous but it is so good and fast at making rip cuts. There are power several tools I have not used 3 years. The router bench is one, the power joiner is another. So it will be interesting to see and hear your take on mixed use of power and hand tools.

Thanks Rex. I'm enjoying these videos a lot. It's nice seeing the process. I can already tell that this is the bench I'm going to build.

Great video Rex. That is going to be a nice bench. It always amazes me how strong and rigid a well fitted wood joint is. Looking forward to the next video.

Thank you Rex, watching this is helpful and a lot of fun. I'm sort of leaning more machine than hand tools these days due to physical limitations but I love seeing the blend. I think exploring a blend of the two "theories" is a great way to make new content.

Really enjoying this project Rex, glad to be able to watch. Looking forward to possibly building one for myself.

Honestly, I am not liking these series of videos. I am loving them. Thank you, Rex!

Assume bench is 5ft and bench builder is "a few bricks short of a full load" i.e. "challenged"

As always you are taking a pragmatic effective approach to problem solving. The journey is important but the results are too.

Nice progress

Rex, I'm unable to login to the forums. I get an error "Mismatching redirect URI." - I think you may need to ask Discourse to resolve it.

And cross members - new users need to know about planning their vise, so they don't have to rebuild their bench to fit in a vise they never planned. Someone like that lives in my house...

John Morrison

This is great - solid thought and high quality work went in to this

John Morrison

Thanks, Rex for keeping us posted on your progress with these short videos. Look forward to the next one.
