Early Access Video: Build an English Cricket Stool

Friends:

It's been an eventful few weeks around here, but I found time to make this great little stool. This is a perfect project for the advanced beginner. It uses a small amount of wood, a single angle, and just one joint. You can do the whole thing on a low bench with about 10 tools. It's a skill-builder for newer woodworkers and a quick project for the more experienced among us.

Just like usual, we have detailed plans. They'll be posted on Wednesday morning. I'm also finishing up a brand new Furniture Forensics and that will be ready next week.

Lots of stuff to look forward to.

Happy Saturday!

Early Access Video: Build an English Cricket Stool

Comments

Thanks for this one, Rex! Yeah, I'm back - a little older (80) and a few less innards - that stage 3 cancer will get ya every time, but I'm feeling better, starting to gain some weight back, and hoping to build a couple of your simpler WWFH plans. This cricket will be a perfect first birthday present for my youngest great-granddaughter, and a great excuse to get out into the shop and get busy! And thanks for the thickness post - I thought a clear pine 1x8 might workout pretty well, and I'm leaving it unfinished so she can pick out her own color (when she gets old enough), meanwhile, get over that bug, and keep 'em coming! I hope to be playing with WWFH projects when I reach 90!

Whenever Im burned out trying to figure out how My Porter Cable Dovetail works, its such a relief to watch one of your videos and get my creative juices working. Thanks

bob lawson

I'm American. I haven't the slightest clue!

Rex Krueger

Good point! 3/4 in.

Rex Krueger

I would think that 1" should be ok, but don't quote me on this 😁

Lubos Tomicek

There you have my next project(in fact the second one) . Thank you so much Rex for inspiring me to start with woodworking. Just question though. You said on the video that 4feet is enough, the plan show that it should be 8in wide, but how thick?

Gabriel Poleze

And I thought a cricket stool was something to sit on watching a game of cricket, not a term for a short stool

Rob Lovett

The series is indeed alive. We'll have more of this for sure.

Rex Krueger

I really appreciate that! I've had this one on the back-burner for a long time.

Rex Krueger

Thank you!

Rex Krueger

He's a good chap.

Rex Krueger

Thank you!

Rex Krueger

I'll look around for one!

Cypress is a good choice. Easy enough to work. Durable.

Rex Krueger

There were so many good techniques that I ended up splitting the video. Just made sense.

Rex Krueger

I'm really quite fond of milk paint. I just haven't had luck with it being durable enough. Maybe this one will get milk paint and poly? It's an option.

Rex Krueger

You really should! It's got challenging bits, but it's not hard.

Rex Krueger

I really hope you do!

Rex Krueger

Godspeed!

Rex Krueger

I don't see any reason you couldn't make it as big as the Mission bench. The joinery is certainly up to the task.

Rex Krueger

I really felt dumb when I did it. But it happens to all of us.

Rex Krueger

I'm really glad you think so!

Rex Krueger

Love it! Glad to see the WWFH series is still alive and kicking. Also very excited that another installment of furniture forensics is coming up. Minor note: I noticed you repeated yourself a little regarding the use of a router plane (starting at about 4:59).

Another success Rex, well done

Shane Thomas

nice project !!!

Stefan Blümke

Nice project. Loved the Drinker quote:-D.

Excellent,

Lubos Tomicek

I also like these basic but useful projects. And think that an antiqued paint finish like the inspiration stool looks great on these types of pieces. Would be interested in something like a Dining/Card Table in a basic straightforward style.

Gerald Eddy has the right idea. I have some 2x12 Cypress and it would make an awesome bench. Thanks Rex, and keep up the good work.

Skully Wood and Metal

Very nice Rex. I started watching this and thought I had seen some of the sections before, then I realized you went through the techniques last week. Very nice little stool and need one to get to the top shelves of my kitchen. Perfect timing. Thank you sir.

Matt Evans-Koch

I made a stool like that when I was in Middle School. My mom used it for over 40 years until she passed. Now my sister has it. Mom's only complaint was that towards the end, she found it too heavy to move. It's definitely heavy. I can't tell what I made it out of. Some mystery wood - maybe Butternut? But it goes to show that if you take the time to do things right and pay attention to detail, something as simple as a stool can last for generations. You did a great job. I know you hate milk paint, but that stool seems like a perfect candidate for a semi-transparent coat of milk paint and shellac.

Michael Bennett

I like these videos with simple basic tools and projects. They inspire me to attempt my own projects.

Jud Greer

Cute! My son and I are going to build a pair of these.

Cat solmin

Inspiration by the bucketload! I'm off to the basement. Thanks Rex.

Sean McGown

I like this project but am wondering if it could be made as big as the Mission style bench so it might have more practical uses? Well… I will try it! Thanks again!

Gerald Eddy

Like how you said “ this was just dumb” when you broke the wood. That comment shows that, like all of us we make silly mistakes. Keep calm and carry on.

Jason Ransom

Another great project!
