WBS #009: Garrett Hack

Friends:

Yesterday's visit with Garrett Hack was even better than expected!  Not only did he reveal the mysteries of the scratch stock, he also took us on a tour of his Vermont shop and gave us an EXCLUSIVE look at a new commission he's building.

It was a fantastic experience. Thanks to everyone who joined us in the livestream.

Hope everyone enjoys the video. It's worth watching, even if you were there live.

This is my "week off", so no video tomorrow, but we'll be back next week.

Have a great weekend!

Great video. Thanks to Mr. Hack and Rex. I've run into the molding plane and grooving planes where they are sharp but just tear at changing grain. The scratch stock idea is really great alternative! Looks easy and quick to do too.

I finally got around to seeing it! I'm going to churn out scratch stocks now! And making a holder from oak! I can hardly wait. Amazing video—and what a pleasant man :^)

That desk have a place in an art gallery!

It may be an Android / Vimeo app issue. Deleting the app and launching the link in the browser works. Mr Geoffrey Wilson had my number on that one. Thanks.

You're right, I used a "gramil" tool, which is a fancy adjustable holder for a sharpened marking tool type blade. Used luthier Robert Obrien's tip to turn that blade around, grind and sharpen the 1/16 end to a scraper, and make a groove in the side to define the bottom of the binding channel. Will want to experiment w my own stock to do more freehand inlays in the tuning head;)

John Griswold

I don't get tool envy very often, but I kinda want one of those.

Rex Krueger

I don't see anyone else having this problem. Maybe restart your computer?

Rex Krueger

I'm really glad you enjoyed it!

Rex Krueger

It's my pleasure! The man is a joy to talk to.

Rex Krueger

I feel the same way!

Rex Krueger

I think you could totally do binding with a stock. Makes sense!

Have been building a guitar by hand and see some potential w the scratch stocks for inlay work. Most luthiers use Dremels and laminate trimmers and I really want to avoid them if I can, thanks Rex and Garrett!

John Griswold

Thanks Mr Wilson. That worked.

Joel DeSloover

If you're on your phone trying to use the Vimeo app, try uninstalling the app and having chrome play it. Another person had that issue and that helped them. Hope that helps you.

Geoffrey Wilson

That was fascinating and has made me want to try out the scratch stock on some projects I have planned!

Gerald Eddy

What a fascinating WBS!! Than k you, Rex, for getting Garrett Hack on for this!!

Sean O'Neill

I enjoyed this very much. I had no idea about scratch stock but it makes perfect sense. He was a pleasure to listen to and to see his shop and tolls was a treat. Thanks so much!

Robert Bullock

The Vimeo links don't play. Is there a faq about this? This issue isn't isolated to this post, none of the Vimeo links will play.

Joel DeSloover

I caught this last night after the live, but it was really good. Learned more about scratch stocks then I thought was possible. Also, learned that Garrett owns a bandsaw that may have its own dedicated Vermont zip code, that thing was massive lol.
