Early Access Video: Scary Sharp is Dead!

Friends:

The New Woodwork Economy is here and we better adapt. I promised you solutions that are small, local, and high-tech

This week we get high-tech as I review a set of 4 diamond stoned that costs $20 for ALL FOUR. For that price can they possible measure up?

Hint: they're better than sandpaper. That nonsense is over.

If you're waiting for more videos in the lather series, don't worry. We'll get back to that soon.

Happy Saturday!

Early Access Video: Scary Sharp is Dead!

Comments

Got the stones online. Now using planes ive put aside because i couldnt get proficient on the normal stones. Thank you. I even use thenewly sharpened Stanley No.1!

bob lawson

Tons on Ebay (diamond whetstone set), most shipping from China with nominal shipping fees.

Paul Baur

Sweet means I got mine in time lol. So far they work nicely. I think if I do them again I will do some form of raised setup as some pocket knifes aren't as easy, but heck at the price may just get another set.

Jimmie Petsel

I didn't mean to do it!

Rex Krueger

The Krueger Effect. They're sold out!

Braden Mabry

@Eloque Thanks man, that's nice of you! If those I've ordered from AliExpress are worthless, I might take you up on it!

Thomas Hverring

@Rex I just love to stack up on stuff. You should never go down on equipment! 😄 But, no, you're absolutely right. Also, I don't know if they're worth it till I've tried them. See more on the forum when I get them!

Thomas Hverring

Nice, that's almost exactly the setup I made back in 2021. I was even newer to the hobby then and I needed tips sharpening. With some help and suggestions from the forum among other things, I made about the same setup. And then made a video showing how I used them to ask for help on how to sharpen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AM8flzuLQes Got some good tips and my stuff is getting kind of sharp now, although I still find it challenging. I got really cheap ones from China back then and use water as lubricant. They rust a bit. They are now a year old or such and they are still the same as far as I can tell. I paid 9 euro's with free shipping. I will be keeping an eye out for these within Amazon.

Eloque

Also, I live in NL and do have Amazon. Shipping to Denmark is about 10 Euro's from where I am at for small packages, so if you do want those from Amazon, I'd be able to send such to you.

Eloque

Looks like the shipping from Ali will take 1.5 - 2 months. So maybe the extra $3 is worth it if you need sharpening tools now.

David Weiser

My pleasure!

Rex Krueger

They look the same!

Rex Krueger

I think one set is plenty. When these wear out, upgrade!

Rex Krueger

It's...something worth waiting for.

Rex Krueger

I have a set of big ones, too and I think you're totally right!

Rex Krueger

Well, most of that is news to me. Thanks for the education!

Rex Krueger

I really should dig up some of the embarrasing tools and give them another look.

Rex Krueger

I saw Paul's post while I was making this video. Hilarious coincidence.

Rex Krueger

I still find a lot of uses for the very fine paper....just not so much as I used to.

Rex Krueger

Even more grits!

Rex Krueger

That's a pro-tip!

Rex Krueger

I'm delighted to hear that they're working for others!

Rex Krueger

My god, the drawer of oilstones I have! I see them for a buck sometimes and I can't say no!

Rex Krueger

As a company, we've decided to give the intro a rest for a while. I've been doing the same thing for years. Change is good.

Rex Krueger

The DMT are way too big for lathe tools. These cheapos have tuned up my lathe tools for years now. Hard to go wrong.

Rex Krueger

I've bought many tool from them....some I will never admit to!

Rex Krueger

For the record, I've always advocated oilstones, which used to be much more affordable.

Rex Krueger

It's a new day!

Rex Krueger

Thanks for the heads up on this deal.

Richard Young

I ended up with a different brand but I suppose the same products on amazon.de for ~€26: https://www.amazon.de/-/en/gp/product/B093H2FK9J/ (#400/#1000) and https://www.amazon.de/-/en/gp/product/B09J51DNZM/ (#600/#1200)

Borjan Tchakaloff

Well, I found several different kinds on AliExpress, and I ended up ordering three full size and very cheap ones. I considered ordering extras, but then it's getting silly :^D

Thomas Hverring

Living in Denmark this is not an option. We don't have Amazon, and I use the German one (the UK one is hampered by Brexit). I did find the four stones for €31 ($34), which is still pretty cheap, but it doesn't ship to Denmark (many things don't on the German Amazon). I'm going to look at AliExpress.

Thomas Hverring

What is the new planing stop I see on your bench?

KingQueso

Great coverage of these stones. I purchased a 3 piece (400, 600, 1200) EZ-Lap 2 years ago and have been very happy with them. I would recommend when you are ready to upgrade to the thicker more expensive brands that you order a minimum see of 3" x 8" (75mm x 200mm) for the wider blades and chisels. Thank you Rex for another super video.

Ps: if interested, I will link to the Alibaba manufacturer site below: https://m.alibaba.com/product/1600242543383/Diamond-Stone-Diamond-Stone-Sharpening-Diamond.html?s=p&__detailProductImg=https://s.alicdn.com/@sc04/kf/H4f947199a7db4a3fb0b00f130f986afaP.jpg_200x200.jpg

I don’t recommend new woodworkers by supplies like this from AliExpress. A little history about me. I own a Amazon business so maybe I am biased, but the new woodworker isn’t really doing anything by going to AliExpress for goods. AliExpress is not cutting out the middle man, as they are a B2C business like Amazon, lots of people own small businesses selling products they get through Alibaba, the manufacturing platform which caters to businesses and not to consumers. The diamond stones linked in Rex’s video are also sold by a Chinese business, but have the distinct advantage of being already in a US based Amazon distribution center. This circumvents many of the global shipping issues and times, allowing the new woodworker to get work instead of waiting a month, if they are lucky. So while the ones via AliExpress are cheaper by a few bucks, they may end up taking longer for new folks to get them and you are still going through a secondary source, not directly from the manufacturer.

James Crandall

So...carrying around that lumber and a bag for chips in change...what a pain. Or virtual lumber - 'Bitlum'. The wave (or grain) of the future!

Bruce Rose

In general the thing that gets people was sticker shock. Good diamond plates weren't cheap for a while, and the cheap ones weren't good. Fast forward to now, and the cheap plates are starting to rival the quality of the premium ones. A few people on the forum got defective plates through sites like Ali Express, but they are cheap enough that most agree it was worth the risk. I think Rex's review shows how much they have changed in the last few years though. I got DMT stones a couple years ago and now I'm starting to wish these good cheaper plates existed then! I still have my oil and water stones, but they only get used very rarely anymore.

Nic Beurskens

Awesome, thank you Rex! How about a video of just running through the fails? Would love it, even if it has to be patreon only, of just "this sucked, this sucked, this super sucked"

David Bumpus

Totally agree !!!! I kept waiting for the ball to drop. Part of Rex’s charm is his funky humor 😉

Richard C von Brecht

Another class video. Paul Sellers has been pushing these for a while now. I haven't seen anything negative about them on his site - maybe someone else has? I got a bunch a year or so ago, but moved busy building my Rex bench (wife decided to sell last house just as I was getting into my bench build... I muttered something about screwing it into the corner of the garage... Bad move)

John Morrison

Rex, what I going to do with my supply of 15,000 fine grit sandpaper? I guess I’ll just save it to polish glass. My other complaint is we don’t use Imperial measurement units, technically our silly measurement system is called the United States Customary System; i.e. USC System. This is a pet peeve of mine from my engineer days.

Richard C von Brecht

just got mine last night, 200,400,600,800,1000 and 1200 grits, $23.99, Link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09M9TXNL1?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details

Deron Kosloski

About 5 years ago I bought a set of similar diamond plates off of eBay, a 400, 1000 and 3000 grit, for a total of $10. I glued them down to a dead flat ceramic tile and have been using them with really good results. Last year Trend had their 400/1000 diamond stone on sale for about $80 so I jumped on it and it's my primary sharpening system now, but I still pull out the tile every now and then and it's just as good as when I set it up and broke the plates in. FYI, I made what seems to be a good lapping fluid by mixing half mineral oil and half 3-in-1 oil. It makes a nice slurry after a few strokes and won't rust the steel plates on my tile setup or my Trend.

Hal Songer

Bought these a few week ago because of your recommendation. Very happy with my purchase. Great content.

Thrifty Woodworker

Was about to go and buy a set until I remembered that I have more oilstones than I could possibly use. Rex is starting to have the same power as Paul Sellers!

Martin Hartley

This episode has no intro. Is that the new normal too?

Yang Ji

Okay, my plan, buy 2000 of these for $40,000. After 2 months of the Rex effect I should be able to sell them for $60,000.... One the serious side. I already have the DMT set. Yes I believe with all the irons for all the planes that I've restored that I saved money over sand paper. Also their large size is great when sharpening wide irons and using a honing guide. However, I've been looking at the credit card sized plates for using at the lathe. It feels more natural to me to hand hold something than use a bench setup for my tools. The DMT are big and heavy and so are a bit unwieldy for hand holding. Those tend to be...$20. hum...

Todd Maurer

So, I heard the US Treasury is going to base the value of the US Dollar on the lumber standard now. (j/k, but still)

Jeremy Denslinger

What's cheaper than $20 on Amazon? https://m.aliexpress.com/item/1005002796790394.html?spm=a2g0n.order_detail.0.0.10a8f19cwAUaue When I heard you mention these in your last video I went poking around and eventually remembered gool ol Ali. Cut out the middle man!

David Weiser

I've been saying this for a couple of years now, glad you've caught up. To me the scary sharp system has always been more expensive. Might have been because I live in UK where costs are different for different things. Wood is still expensive though.

WoodworkLearner

I've paid more than 5 bucks for a single roll of sandpaper that is quite the PITA compared with diamond stones. RIP scary sharp!
