Sneak Peek: The Two-Board Shave Horse

Friends:

Man, am I excited!  I've spent weeks figuring out how to squeeze a full-featured shave horse out of just two boards, but I've done it!  This English "bodger's horse" is made from just one 2x12 and one 2x4 and it works great.

I just finished yesterday and I had to share.

The video will be up Saturday as usual and your FREE plans will follow soon after.

Apologies for the less-than-stellar picture. I'm rushing to get the script written.

See you Saturday!

Sneak Peek: The Two-Board Shave Horse

Comments

Is there a plan available for this one?

Christopher D Combs

Where are the plans for the shave horse?

Ricky

I think a couple of stair treads would be perfect.

Rex Krueger

And I think I'll build this one!

Howard Tuckey

I have a couple of stair treads left over from building the leg vise for the English joiner's bench. I wonder if they could replace the 2x12 or at least some of this? I've wanted to own a shaving horse since I first saw one, 40-some years ago!

Howard Tuckey

LOL!

Jeff Tinsley

Right there with you! You can always tell by the cushion on the seat! LOL

Bruce Rose

I teach in person. Never recorded, no editing. Your very quick energetic pace is great for an instant replay medium, and is a joy to watch. Your writing and delivery is so crisp and fun. You build the story well. Your call forwards and callbacks are also well balanced. Most importantly, you show a lot of empathy, describe the feeling of the challenges, and encourage your students to persist and take heart. My tiny suggestion is to do little emotive celebrations of wins. You say you're happy with how things turn out. Be happy. I believe your gratitude for us patrons, and I believe your empathy for the beginning woodworker, your glorious obsession with flea market finds and craftspeople of the past who made it work. Take a page from St. Roy and bring a little of the delight we know you're feeling with that drawknife on the work. Perhaps you're a bit out of touch with it since you had to hustle so much to do custom work. But I think we all feel it simmering in there. You've got a great smile. BTW, my partner Katy watches too, and with one look at you she said she is worried that you don't get enough iron. You sure bring out the love. Thanks for all the hard work Rex. I hope it's paying off for you.

In my case, this would be a "Codger's Horse", although I have wanted one since before I became an old codger.

Jeff Tinsley

looks dope

Drew from Westchester

I bet I could learn from YOU!

Rex Krueger

As a proud 'English bodger' myself this looks very interesting! Can't wait to see and build one.

Peter Parry

Ok. I admit I have no idea what this does. You told me what it is and there is a picture, but I'm just not getting it. Like others, I get real entertainment from your shows. I could google this, but I'm going to wait.

Michael Simpson

FINALLY! THANKS REX! Ya know, I watch your vids for the entertainment value mostly. I'm an adult educator, and need to learn from you.

judd

I can't wait to see the video. I've been wanting to make one like this for a while.

Robert A Carbo

the lumber is in stock - i´m ready to go !!!

Stefan Blümke

I love this. I just put bids on an old drawknife because I had to use my scrub plane on a project and I knew it was not the correct tool for the job. Great timing. Thank you Rex.

Malcolm Miller

Looking forward got this build Rex, but where do you plug it in,....lol

Brian Shaw

This looks like a fun project , I would have found this very useful when I made your three legged modern bar stool. I've since made a milking stool as well just to reinforce my new skills.I have plenty of room in my workshop and will be making this for sure. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Richard Ziewiec

You only need very little pressure to hold down your stock and you will be sitting directly over the legs , I would imagine sagging would not be a problem. Though I do understand the urge to over engineer sometimes , I have been guilty of that myself.

Richard Ziewiec

I hear your weight concerns. I weigh 300# myself. I see a problem with it sagging in the middle instead of the legs giving out. If it's designed like the workbench, there are battens where the legs are attached that double the strength of the wood. A 2x4 batten placed edgewise down the center and screwed to the underside of the horse would keep it from sagging.

Michael Bennett

Drawknives can definitely be addictive.

Michael Bennett

Awesome! I was just talking about a saw horse expansion for my coming LRSB :^)

Thomas Hverring

That is one cool looking contraption.

Thrifty Woodworker

Man, I'm 220 (and I've been 300). I think this is fine as-is. If you're nervous, make the legs from hardwood. That'll do er.

Rex Krueger

Can't wait for this! Omg! Not only for the build but the inevitable history of the use and start if this thing that I know Rex can't help but share. Best woodworking channel hands down.

e.d.

I’m a little worried about those legs and me carrying more than a few extra pounds (275). In the vid or here if you could speak to beefing it up for us larger/heavier guys?

Kevin Randolph

My next project is here!

Lawrence Jones Jr

Amazing. Can't wait to see this. I've been wanting to build a shave horse for a while. I tried out an "English Pattern" shave horse and didn't really get on with it as I found the wood was held too low down to work on. Very interested to see how this turns out.

Jon Stammers

I also have been looking forward to this build. I've been wanting one for a long time. Now I have incentive to build my forge and make a draw knife.

Hank Jones

Our HOA owns 6 acres of protected woodland/wetlands with tons of storm downed trees which need to be removed. I MUST make one of these.

Michael Bragg

I am really excited for this one. Anticipation ……!

Robert Bullock

I don't get it? My friend Harland is building one of these and has set it on two plastic buckets to work on it's legs. Maybe draw knives should be sold as controlled substance that can lead to addiction. Although with the price of lumber, maybe working with green wood would be an affordable way to feed the addiction ;-)

Jerry Kingzett

Is it Saturday yet? - open! open! open!

Leroy Barker

Looking forward to it Rex

Dad Kewl

I'm really excited to make this! Thanks Rex, your timing is perfect.

Doug

Awesome! I have been wanting to make a shave horse for a long time, so this is a great excuse.

Nicholas Harris

That looks excellent! Thanks for the sneak peek

Vasileios

looks great! looking forward to hearing what you have to say about the cant of the legs. please feel free to comment generously on this particular point.

T. Flo

Oh wow I can't wait

James Smith

definitely another cool tool, but have you seen "unplugged woodworking" and his roman workbench? I was wondering if instead of another bench, could the travelers bench be modified? My concerns are the dowel holes in the sides of the bench top (2x) too thin and pushing on the dowels could split the top? What do you think? Also, very glad you are fully or almost fully recovered!!!!

Marc Barash

Go buy your boards today. They'll sell out when the video drops.

James Carey

This is awesome! I can't wait to see how you accomplished this one. Oh, and the picture like great too!

Ellen Sloan

Perfectly timed as I am just completing the traveller's workbench and started to think about options going beyond its capabilities.

K. Hampf

Wow! This is exciting. Can’t wait, Rex!

Sean O'Neill

I definitely want to build this. I built the low Roman bench in the fall, and I've been thinking about how to adapt it to take some inserts to convert to a shave horse. Once I finish my garage remodel, I might just build one of these next.

Damon Conway

The shave horse is typically used with a draw knife to shape pieces of wood for furniture legs, axe handles or anything else that needs to go from a rough dimensional shape to a roundish shape. Typically used by people who build projects out of green lumber. The non-dried lumber is easier to carve and shape than dried lumber. There are a ton of YouTube videos that show how to use a shave horse. It's interesting. I recommend looking into it.

Scott Alderfer

Yes!

J-F

They're really handy for using with pulling tools, like a draw knife. Anne of All Trades has a great video on shave horses too, but hers isn't a 2-board pattern like this! I'm really excited about these plans.

Ben Ericson

Hooray! Finally!

Chuck Norris

Could this be combined into the design of the Low Roman bench?

Paul Kennedy

I once saw a Craigslist listing for "Shave Horse, Spoon Mule" and out of context that sounds like some advanced animal care.

Jeff Good

I've been trying to figure out which shave horse design I want to build for months. If it's a Rex design, I can be certain that it's going to be an efficient and economical build. I can't wait to get the plans. Thanks, Rex!

Scott Alderfer

I'll build this one. Thanks very much.

Larry W Thayer

This looks great! I built a shave horse in a similar design, but I can already see some adaptations from yours that I’d like to make on mine. Looking forward to Saturday!

Aaron Wasielewski

Ooh, this’ll be a fun project to make with / for my dad! I may see if I can figure out how to adapt this to be an accessory for the new Travelers Bench

Peter Schmiedeskamp

I love seeing the low Roman bench, disposable saw and, not counting the bench, only two clamps.

Ralph Ambrosio

I´ve heard of a saw horse but I don´t know this one. What is it for exactly?

Nikoloz Petelava

Wow that looks fantastic! I'm excited to see how you incorporate this new tool in future projects. Thanks for your hard work.

John Hiemstra

I've been waiting to see an update of this project!! It looks awesome. I appreciate how much you work to make your projects use the least amount of wood

Alex Lopatka

Awesome!!!!

Rustique Frank

nb4 Rex figures out how to use a single 2x12 :D

Jeremy Denslinger

I’m pretty excited. I just made a draw knife for another project and I love the thought of starting some green woodworking.

Ian McElcheran

This is amazing! I can't wait!!
