Free Plans: Japanese Marking Gauge

Friends:

I have the best Patrons. Not one of you asked me about these plans, even though they were done yesterday and should have been posted. I just got busy and forgot.

The plans are attached to this post and they're also on the plan archive:  https://rexkrueger.discourse.group/c/plans-archive/11

Hope you're having a great week!

Free Plans: Japanese Marking Gauge

Comments

It was very straight forward - I am still new at this. Anyway some photos at https://photos.app.goo.gl/f9mgrLaTsGTMMb3E9

I will. I am compiling quite a portfolio of "Rex" items that I've worked on. I will post on discourse. I am working on my second "simple box" right now.

Amy Holderness

Really? I would not mind seeing how you did that.

Rex Krueger

Totally! And the point is, you pushed through and got it done. That's the key! Did you put up pics on the Discourse?

Just made two of the cutting gauges. I love your optimism - "If this is your first mortise I will go pretty well." I'm paraphrasing but made me laugh. Went pretty badly - hence - the second attempt. Went better but much more practice is needed! But it's the journey - or should I say joinery.

Amy Holderness

So, I made the gauge this week (from white oak salvaged from neighbours kitchen cabinet doors). I like it a lot compared with the more traditional marking gauge - that I also made. The blade makes a massive difference - I've not got the hang of the normal marking gauge as yet. One thing that didn't feel "quite right" was the wedge in this gauge compared with the one in the western style gauge. The penny dropped, I was missing the click action of the wedge in the western gauge. So half an hour later my Japanese gauge has a click action wedge - it is much improved!

Watching your videos is my entertainment. I am a hobbyist now, for many years I was a broke homeowner, and I am not looking for building plans for my kitchen and a new bathroom. Additionally, I am not supporting a plumbing channel. I would like to think you get enjoyment out of our relationship too. You are honest and interesting, and your projects are well thought out. People say, enjoy what you do and you will never go to work, but I disagree. You can love what you are doing, but it is still work. Just like relationships, you can love your family, but there is a whole lotta work involved. You being diligent is a part of you we like, that is what makes your videos so good. No one is suggesting that you are slacking. Take some deep cleansing breaths. We shall be here.

Steve

Agree with both our the above comments.

James Bornheimer

You already mentioned you had a busy week ahead, so don't worry about it. I figured you would release it when you got the time, and if not, no problem, the video gives more than enough info to make one yourself. I don't think the measurements are all that important. Meaning, they don't have to be exact. Just workable...

Frans van Ballegooijen

Yeah dont feel pressured to create a video every week. burn out is a real concern. I'd rather good quality videos that you enjoy making than the alternative.

Deco Skye

We all know you need and deserve a little Rex time. Enjoy your break. Maybe some of us will have this built by the tome you get back.
