SPOILERS! If you haven’t read Chapter 11 yet, you should do so before reading further.
With the city guard preparing to assault the Dancing Duchess, the adventurers and their new ally, the veteran player known as Fanglord, must make their escape. The vampire plans to walk out the front door with Luriandiil and Ibrahim, since they all appear innocuous enough. Yet the demonic appearance of Lady Reiko would surely result in her being attacked by the guards the moment she stepped through the front doors. The kunoichi must escape by another route.
Reiko had ordered her new familiar, Diane, to adopt a “less conspicuous” form. Diane, having no conscious knowledge of how to shapeshift, reflexively transformed herself into an amulet. If being turned into a pet was not humiliating enough, she was now nothing more than a bauble, dangling from a string around Reiko’s neck! She can only hope that she will be able to shift back into an animate form once she and her mistress are safely away from the city.
Fanglord offered the kunoichi two potential escape routes: the easier path, up to the roof of the Dancing Duchess and from there to the roof of a neighboring building; and the more difficult path, down into the city sewers, where unknown dangers await. Diane feels drawn to the sewer route, for reasons she cannot explain. She also thinks that she could influence Reiko to take that route, if she exploits the subconscious bond that exists between them as master and familiar.
