Pre-Release: Tiny Pentium Sound Card Upgrade

Hello! I am finishing up the next video right now and rendered out a pre-release version of it here. I've got a few more things to tighten up and a couple of graphics to add. This is also going to be the first hardcopy supporter video, it's not included in the preview yet because I wanted to spend a bit of time after figuring out how best to shoot that rather than rush it at the end. So that will be included in the final version. If you have any suggestions/critiques, I could more easily make changes before release this time around. I already have heard some motion shots need more stabilization, so I'll be doing that.

This video was also shot with a fair amount of new hardware for my camera that really cut down on some of the little pains and gave me some new capabilities. I now only have a power and XLR cable connected to my camera "rig" instead of a giant bundle of cables like I've had in the past. A lot it is down to getting a dedicated monitor for my camera finally so I can sit next to the tripod for videos like this and can see the shot at the same time. I also got a new tripod head and slider which have really changed how I can work with the camera. The tripod head has introduced some new challenges that I'm working on solving. It was a tad heavier than I expected but it's been a very positive improvement overall. I'm going to see about what I can do for a better lens for my camera next, I can definitely tell I'm pushing the one I'm using now past its limits and it would probably be a big change for me. But not inexpensive so I want to make the right choice on that.

Anyway, this video topic was something that took a little bit of luck on ebay. I realized I could put a Waveblaster/wavetable sound module in the Tiny Pentium system to really improve its midi capability so I started looking for PCI sound cards that support that. There are shockingly few, it's pretty much only the Aureal Vortex series. They kinda looked like the cheap pack-in cards from OEM systems so I wasn't too sure about them. But after some research and examples I realized that they could be pretty good. So I decided to try and get one of the better examples of one and lucked out after a few weeks and snagged one for a good price. This is the result of the upgrade for the system and I have to say, I'm very pleased with the results!

PS: (feat. cat, he was just having a good day hanging out with me so I didn't want to boot him off the table to film)

Comments

The X2 and the S2 are definitely some great options to spice up the MIDI capability of older computers. I should have given this a try a long time ago!

I use Dreamblaster S2's on my retro systems. I love the way it sounds. I didn't need the extra stuff the X2 offers over the S2.

I was not disappointed. An excellent cat!
