Hardcopy Supporter Tier Added!

As I mentioned in a post I have been thinking about adding a tier for printing out names at the end of videos on an interesting printer. Well I'm ready to try it out now!

The new tier has been added and I figured I would go over what all my plans are for it!

I have too many vintage printers, typewriters, I almost bought a ditto machine, and I have a couple plotters so I clearly have a fascination with the physical storage of information. I think it would be fun to take a list of supporters and once a month commit them to a physical medium and record it on camera. Then I could include it at the end of videos.  I'm not going to make any guarantees about which machines will be used when or how frequently they may repeat. I have a few standby dot matrix printers that I like to keep handy and effectively have a lifetime support of ribbon for, so I may tend to use those more. But I'll try to mix it up when I can with something new.

Patreon makes it possible to grab a CSV with Patron names for a given tier. I'll do that before releasing the first video of the month and print them out on camera. I'll reuse that same clip for every video for the rest of the month. Do note that old devices have limited character printing capabilities. If they can print special characters I'll do it but they definitely can't print all the fancy new ones. So I can only really guarantee letters, numbers, and basic punctuation marks for names.

For the time being the resulting papers with names that are produced for this will be stored. I'm open to ideas on what to do with them. Drawing names from those who are listed on it and offering to mail it to them seems like a solid choice but I'm open to suggestions.

Thank you to everyone who has given me support here, it has meant a lot to me in multiple ways. This is a small way I can help give something back and have some fun doing it!

Ah, yeah. That is a confusing thing for people who were already at the $5 tier. But I didn't want to force people into it. The most recent video on the Windows 95 system was a bit of a one off for how long the hardcopy supporters printout is on screen. It was REALLY hard to keep the length at 13:37 and fit everything in that I wanted. I cut a lot of material to hit that time actually. So I couldn't really fit it in any longer on that one. Normal videos have it on screen for about 20s with the normal runout for the video.

After a couple videos I was like 'why don't i see my name?' Just realized I had to change my tier, duh. One tiny bit of feedback if I'm watching your videos on an AppleTV, towards the end of the video it shadows and darkens your content and starts loading 'Watch Next' type of stuff ... effectively making the hardcopy print difficult to catch. Would you consider adding a second or three more at the end of the video to compensate?

I believe that is where the names come from and thanks! I'm glad it's an interesting idea!

Are the printed names basically pulling the 'User Profile Name' field? I like the idea and definitely enjoy all the oldschool print tech.

Good call, I doubt my Apple Imagewriter is going to know what an emoji is. I'll add that to it.

I noticed in the tier notes you don’t mention anything about allowable characters, I assume you’re limited to only extended ASCII names? Not sure if you have any patrons with Unicode names but you might want to clarify if you can’t do them or will instead ask for a romanized reading.
