Ron getting snowballed in the face bwahahah (i'm not really evil, honest wink wink)
some of the kids are a little bit miffed to see the return of Hagrid :(
first time we get properly introduced to Thestrals. Probably the only time the Grifindors and the Slytherins agree on something, as Hagrid's has been known for springing wild and dangerous creatures upon the students.
The image of meat ripping itself off the cow corpse and disappearing … yikes
Umbitch's fake cough worried Hagrid as he thought it was one of Thestrals
Talking to Hagrid as if he was a child?! UMBITCH!! (we'll make you slip up and swear one day lol) (ok I am evil)
Hermione wishing she could see Thestrals
Draco actually being funny about Ron possibly seeing the Quaffle better if he saw someone "snuff it"
Ron laughing at Hermione for wanting to go fast down a snowy hill with planks of wood strapped to her feet
the thought of Sirius pulling Christmas crackers with Keacher
Ron and Hermione discussing with Harry about him and Cho kissing. I like both, but Not sure if I like this version or the film better.
Mr Weasley getting got by the Harry-snake :(

"Hem Hem - Hagrid, who had never heard Umbridge's fake cough before, was gazing in some concern at the closest thestral, evidently under the impression that it had made the sound." I've always found that line really funny.
The way Umbridge treats Hagrid as she observes his class has always been absolutely abhorrent to me. I'm on the Autism spectrum, and especially when I was younger I would sometimes have people speak to me in a similarly condescending way, seemingly assuming from the fact that I didn't always behave "normally" or know how to exist in social situations that I was somehow intellectually inhibited. I didn't always understand why some people would talk to me that way, and I think for that reason I've always kind of related to Hagrid in that scene and been as angry for him at Umbridge as Hermione is.
In terms of your query about 1 vs 2 chapters moving forward, I will just say (with no spoilers) that the next two chapters do pair quite well, but also will probably each have a lot you will want to disccuss, so I'm sure people will be happy whichever choice you make :)

In last months book club Harry needed anger management and in this chapter it’s evident that Cho could need some therapy. Poor girl is only 16 and so traumatised.
Do you think it’s possible to hate Umbridge any more at this point or will she get worse? The way she behaves in Hagrids class is disgusting.

"This is 29 Acacia Road. And this is Eric, the schoolboy who leads an exciting double life. For when Eric eats a banana, an amazing transformation occurs. Eric is......"
It must be said Umbridge is very clever she knows exactly how to manipulate both Hagrid and the students to get the result in the lesson she want's for her report.
Ginnys on the team too now, Yay. I kind of wonder about ron when they are discussing the events between cho and harry it mentions that ron looks at herry shrewdly when he asks him what happend, I get the impression that ron is seeing more in harrys response than hermione.
Assume dramatic voice
Was what harry saw in his dream real..
Will the headmaster belive him...
Will Rons dad survive...
Tune in to the next nail biting edition of veggiegamers book club to find out.

Hey Veezle and Woogie,
I think the dream scene is very interesting. The Snake + Harry "Dream Fusion" thinks about doing something more important while Arthur is still sitting and not attacking. When Arthur then gets out his wand, the thoughts become "I have no choice, i have to attack". Maybe i am grasping here but it could also sound like an excuse to attack? Like i would excuse myself to not go to the gym, because something else came up.
Of course it could also be that there literally was no other way, but i would have thought, that the person, that send the snake, would have had mechanisms and ways to get the snake out of this situation more gracefully and maybe the snake was just using an excuse to attack and well ... not be vegan :D
What do you think? Cant wait to hear your thoughts and i hope you had a great day! :)

Hello, my first comment here, American viewer of yours. Your love of British media has inspired me to watch the Jeremy Brett Sherlock TV show, which I have been enjoying very much. Moving on to the book, this is a great chapter for me in how it encapsulates the rest of the book. My favorite aspect is the visceral portrayal of the fear of not just rejection, but even romance at that age. It should be a happy moment for Harry, but it's much more complicated than that.

G’day Veggie!
I hope you are having a better start to 2026 than me. I tripped down the stairs at the train station and fractured my ankle. I have to be on crutches for 6 weeks.
Chapter 21
* Umbridge makes me so mad in this chapter. She is talking to Hagrid like he’s super slow and unable to understand anything. There are people in real life who behave this way.
* I hate that she asked Neville who he saw die. That’s such a personal question!
* I love Ron’s reaction to finding out Harry and Cho kissed, and Hermione’s deep look of disgust at him
* I wish the movies had kept in that Hermione was still in contact with Krum.
* This is a little sad to think about, but by the end of the series there will be a lot more people who can see Thestrals :(
Have a great month!
Love from Australia

What's up Veggie and Woozle?
Ron: "What does she see in Krum?"
Harry: "Well, I suppose he's older, isn't he?...and he's an international Quidditch player."
Ron: "Yeah, but apart from that."
Never change Ron, haha.
You were right about the thestrals! Too bad Umbridge is a massive ***this string of insults has been removed by the FCC to meet PG-13 regulations***.
I'm not sure if its exclusive to the North American version, but the text switches from "Happy Christmas" to "Merry Christmas" in this chapter. People are wishing Harry a "Happy Christmas" as they are leaving but he thinks to himself that he wants Cho to wish him a "Merry Christmas" in the build up to their kiss. I wonder if the usage of both was intentional or an accident when adapting the text?
Harry is still letting Hermione go on with the knitting. I feel like he should have told her by now.
The dream sequence is pretty intense. Harry vomiting and already letting slip to Ron that he WAS the snake (even if Ron doesn't understand yet) are the two biggest differences to me. Quite the cliffhanger!

Hey Woozle! (And veggie too i guess), missed the last book club but glad to be back
Is it just me that finds the whole Hermione and krum thing weird, I mean he was 17/18 in the last book and Hermione was 14, (15 at max)…..i don’t know it’s just weird to me, especially when it’s implied it’s meant to be romantic and 17 is when you’re legally classed as an adult/ of age in the wizarding world
God I hate umbitch, what the hell was that bullshit with hagrid?!
Hermione’s going on a ski holiday? Her family must be pretty rich to afford that, especially considering this is set in the 90’s (think this one is around 95/96?) makes me realise we never really get any information on Hermiones parents/ personal life except that her parents are both dentists
Baubles of Harry’s face hung from the ceiling 🤣 I love you Dobby but wtf that’s kinda creepy 🤣
Teenage boys (teenagers in general to be fair) dealing with crushes and romance is always so funny, “how was it?”…..”wet”
And even when Harry’s dreams don’t mean anything (the one that’s not about the snake) they’re still crazy 🤣 I mean…..accurate to how dreams are in real life
Also binge watched all your Hogwarts legacy videos cus I started playing it, hope those make a comeback as a regular thing cus there’s a couple side quests I can’t wait for you to get to, (only hints are one involves a niffler, and one involves a verry annoying ghost)
Sorry if it’s a bit long

Hi Veggie! And most importantly, hi lovely miss Woozle! One of my all-time favorite Harry Potter related gifts was a teaspoon given to me by my mom. It’s engraved in the scoop: “Ron’s emotional range.” haha!!
You guessed right! Hagrid taught about thestrals, which I think is a really interesting lesson. I understand what Hermione meant about wanting to see them. As someone who hasn’t seen death, I would be unable to see what a thestral looks like, but I’m interested, you know? I don’t want to watch someone die, but would like to see a thestral. If that makes sense. Also, couldn’t someone who can see them, draw them?
Ugh! The way Umbridge talks to Hagrid is so condescending and rude! I hate her. Can’t wait for her to get her’s…
Go Neville!! He’s improving and doing well (which I always knew he was capable of!) because he has a teacher that actually helps him and encourages him! He’s not careless, he just lacks confidence.
Anyway! Sorry for missing the last book club and the long comment. December got away from me. Started in a new unit at the hospital so I’ve been a little scattered. Hope you and Woozle are having a great start to the new year! GO HAWKS!! 🏈
