SPOILER ALERT! - If you have not watched the show before, don't read the following review until you have! :)

Oh wow, I wasn't expecting this one! I absolutely love the lore we gained for our protagonist and antagonist!

I love how the show can swing from really serious, to emotional, to down right hilarious in the blink of an eye! XD

Very intrigued by the female Firebender we briefly saw... I wonder if we will be meeting her down the line?

Hope you had a great week, guys!!

This is one of my favorite episodes of season one! And, it's a great example of why Zuko is my favorite character. He's so complex and has so many layers. The next episode is another great one! Can't wait to see you react to it. This show just gets better and better!

What I find really beautiful about Aang's story here is that he keeps being unsure of whether or not it was "meant to be". But imo the episode shows us that it was. Because when Aang ran away from home and got caught in the storm. His avatar spirit reacted reflexively and he froze himself. In this episode the exact same thing happens, but this time reacted by making the same ball of protection, but to bring him and the others out of the water and to safety.

Regarding the "council of elders" at the airbending temple: I'm from Switzerland and I always kinda assumed this might be a "primus inter pares" (first among equals) situation. There are some intricacies, but basically this is a system where you have a council of members that are all equal in terms of basically all their rights and obligations. But there is one member that will lead the sessions of the council and often represent the council towards the outside. The Swiss government is actually built on this principle. Here we have a council of 7 "Bundesräten" and one of them is chosen by the parliament as the "Bundespräsident". He actually does not have any further competences than the other members of the "Bundesrat" and he only serves for one year. Basically his only additional right - compared to the other members - is that he has the final say if it comes to a vote in the "Bundesrat" and there is a tie; which can only happen if one member of the council is abstaining from a vote or missing in the first place (since the council has an odd number of members).

Since the air nomads are inspired by tibetan monks I absolutely do believe that was a nod to that tradition.

Aang choosing the objects out of countless others reminds me of a documentary I saw about the Dalai Lama who as the chosen one as an infant had to do this as a trial also. Maybe the writers took inspiration from this?

My favorite scene in this episode is the transition from Zuko's young hopeful unblemished face to his current angry scarred face as Iroh says "the Avatar gives Zuko hope". Recall that Katara tells Aang that he "gives people hope" in the previous scene. The storytelling in that sequence is A+. At the end you say that you think we've pretty much got all of Aang and Zuko's backstories...not so fast. There is always more past to inform the present.

Thank you! Someone else calling out ep. 5 as weak. in my mind if not for a great Iroh/ Zuko, this would be IMO the worst! To me personally still is from Season 2. People love it for Sokka shenanigans. I think after his growth this is too much goofy downgrade. Season 1 I consider The Fortuneteller the weakest. Unlike The Great Divide there isn´t even a good attempt at moral lesson. Season 3 - Painted Lady is worse because though 9 just weird, it´s harmless. Katara´s risk taking in S3 ep. 3 is just too much.

Wrong place to post Axel. This is the comment section for 12th episode of ATLA.. The HP Book club one for chapter 13 is just one below, so repost it there.

Hi veggie! I’ll skip my thoughts on umbridge and the nature of the detentions as I’m sure many others have already talked about it.. I haven’t been in school for 10 years but I still feel sick thinking about how much homework the 5th years are getting! I do not miss those “this year is important!” Speeches from teachers! When Harry is watching the keeper trials from detention, he can’t see who the players are but describes how well they are playing, which one do you think was Ron? Also, in the movies Ron doesn’t join the team until next year, how do you think this part of the story will differ from the movies? All my love to little woozle! Axel/Alex

I've always felt that this was the episode where the show really started, or at least takes off. With a lot of shows nowadays they try to suck you in as fast as possible. The creators really took their time with world/character building and then decided to drop some major information in the middle of the season. Really enjoyed your reaction as always!

I love the juxtaposition; Aang is dealing with the fallout of his selfish act, while Zuko is dealing with the fallout of his selfless act. P.S.: Veggie, why don't you take a good look at the firebender from the intro when you have a chance.

itz_Cherise

Yeah for book 1 episode 11 is the weakest epsode. For book 2 its episode 5 imo and for book 3 its episode 9 imo

Deadshot1999

This is something that has been on my mind since you started this series, but I wanted to wait for you to get to know the world and the characters a bit more. I think this is the perfect episode to point that out: This world building is so amazing. I love that the 4 nations are very clearly based on 4 different asian cultures in our world and that you can sort of apply our worlds thought processes of those cultures to how these nations work. The fire nation is inspired by feudal japan. In Japan even to this day, but ESPECIALLY back then, honor was such an important aspect of their way of life. Everything was about honoring your family, your ancestors, your community, your country, yourself, the people above you, the food you're given, the tasks you're doing... it's all about perfection and honor! And we can see that reflected perfectly in the fire nation, but especially in Zukos story. He is all about restoring his honor. He was cast out (and given an impossible task) not because he disrespected the general or because he lost in an Agni Kai, but because he made the conscious choice to not fight (understandable, it's his father, fuck that dude) and therefore not honor the duel. It is such an intelligent world building!!!

Yes this is definitely my favorite from season 1 just finally getting the back story on Zuko and Aang is amazing, I love iroh in this episode, really showing how much he cares for Zuko and how he has for a long time. Aang has lost so much, all those people from his story just being ended has got to be so painful, he was afraid of losing everyone he knew and loved so he ran away and therefore lost them all, its so heartbreaking how much he has been through, amazing he can keep on going on smiling. Reminds me of a character from an anime thats one of my favorites, fruits basket, hes a lot like the main character in that show Tohru.

Cari Ann

I LOVE this episode!!! It might be one of my favourites over all, it certainly is for Volume 1 - but I'm a lore whore so that makes sense. We've been building up that there is more to Aangs and Zukos story, than what we were shown before, and now we finally get an answer. It explains who they are so much! Just gonna say, you are halfway right, we pretty much got the whole backstory for ONE of them - not gonna tell you who 😉 Just some things to point out for you to mull about: - did you notice that Aang was the only one of the kids to have air tattoos? What do you think that means? - same scene, but the fact that Aang invented the air scooter and the not-super-surprised way the other kids reacted? Indicated that very gifted or very creative benders still think outside the box and come up with new ways to bend the elements. Uh, the possibilities!!! - you obviously noticed Iroh redirecting the lightning (BADASS!!!), but did you notice the movements he did when doing so? - you pointed out the girl during the Agni Kai. Zhao looked sadisticly pleased, our boy Iroh couldn't look at it, she looked menacingly happy about what happened there - what do you think that means?

PumpkinSparks

And that's not dust, it's his airbending 😭

Maia Brodsky

I think the boy's name was Jinju

Maia Brodsky

I love that we still haven't really seen him. We now know his voice (the Sweatheart and VO God that is Mark Hamill) and we know his general shape - but we still don't know what he looks like! He is like this ominous, larger than life, threatful entity - it's such a good visual storytelling!!!

PumpkinSparks

I knew you’d enjoy this episode! And now I can finally say that Firelord Ozai is voiced by Mark Hamill!

Steven

This was one of my favorite episodes from the shows. Really hits with emotional traumas that kids/teens/adults can relate to.
