SPOILER ALERT! - If you have not watched the show before, don't read the following review until you have! :)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So I was warned that this among some fans of the show is considered the 'weakest' episode, but I really enjoyed it! I think I can see why it may be considered forgettable, but for what it was, it was a really good time!

Definitely think the writers took inspiration from the movie the 1950s Japanese movie 'Rashomon'. I really need to rewatch that!

And I love how Sokka and Katara have.. BARELY matured as siblings! XD

Hope you had a great week, guys!!

The fan base was just annoyed at the crazy amount of times this episode was rerun lol. Waiting for atla to come on and it being this one again was the WORST. on its own it’s a pretty good one though.

Brendan Coen

Personally I have maybe 2 or 3 episodes I like less than this one but if there were a vote by the entire fanbase...it would probably be last. The next 2 are top tier. ;)

jolt45

It’s definitely my least favorite episode, but still fun to watch. Compared to the rest of the show it’s pretty forgettable.

Erica

Congrats on surviving the worst episode of ATLA! 😂 Honestly it's not THAT bad, but compared to the rest of the show it's pretty weak. I think the writing and dialogue is too heavy-handed, usually ATLA is more subtle than that, and it's obvious what the moral lesson is gonna be from the start. I do think Aang lying to save the day is hilarious though, I always got a real kick outta that as a kid. XD

Madikuma95

That, but above all the repercussions this white lie by Aang might bring to descendants of the two tribes. IMO that´s a risk one just got to take and often does in this situation. Plus I doubt it would escalate as much as some people make it out to be. If the truth ever would come to light. The response of katara: ¨that is soo wrong¨was very corny though.

Embran

It´s unfortunate that this is the only episode within ATLA we see the Avatar as the mediator. Not spokes person for morale, bridge between worlds or punisher as we will see later on. But the 4th function one can expect: the negotiator. So this episode could have been important. And opposing parties cooperating to survive and ideally acceptance afterwards or at least better understanding is always a good message to throw in. That´s why so often in kid shows present. But because of the ending, both visually and morally awkward the heavily debated white lie of Aang), this episode becomes worse than even filler - besides just being an in between adventure with nothing contributing to plot - that even ATLA writers joke about it. Sigh. -_-

It's really not as bad as people make it out to be. I've seen some people say that Nickelodeon overplayed this episode and thats the reason they dislike it so much. Ive seen people cite Aang's lie at the end being the reason they dislike the episode. Like they think lying is out of character for Aang when he has lied in previous episodes. I appreciate you giving the episode a fair watch.

Sarah

It’s funny how this became the worst episode lol. For those of us who watched the show during the original airing, this episode got old REAL quick! They used to play it sooooo often in between seasons. But I suppose from a network perspective, it’s kind of a good one to bring in new watchers because it doesn’t move the plot forward, but you do get to see some bending, world building, and character work to pique your interest.

Appart from that i really think you should do korra in my opinion though many agree and disagree i dont like korra as much as I liked last airbender, but I love them both

Kael Johnsen

Yeah, in my opinion this one is one of the worse episodes, but I love to se aang use offensive airbending against the crawlers. Thats something you wont se often at all, due to his passifist style of life, he does not like hurtig people. And Zuko being gone is also not good. There are a few episodes i dont like, actually. Avatar day, and one and the painted lady. Thats just my opinion though, and they are not to come untill book 2 and 3.

Kael Johnsen

I have to say that I was weirdly impressed when you came up with the kinda bonkers idea of riding the crawlers even before Aang did😅

Diego Zenhäusern

I do think you should watch korra, although I am not a huge fan of the show it does continue the story, even if it changes a few things that are not my favorite. The movie? shhh there is no movie lol. The live action tv show wasnt as bad....but they coulda done better by just sticking to the source material. Avatar series in cartoon is the greatest, the clear winner.

Cari Ann

"If this is the worst one the show has very little faults" exactly, it may be the lowest rated but its still not a bad episode, so the lowest point isn't that low. I also love the different cartoon styles for the stories, the jang one looks so cool. I also do like that Aang lies to get them to forgive eachother although I do think that wouldnt have worked in reality, if tribes are fueding that long they would likely deny someone telling them the "true story" of what really happened if it doesn't agree with their take but it is a feel good ending having them travel to ba sing sa together.

Cari Ann

I personally like this episode. Sure, it's not my favourite, but it's fun and teaches a valuable lesson, especially for children. I think people make it seem worse than it actually is, but you just internalise that opinion regardless of how you liked it. There was even one reactor who literally skipped this episode, leaving in the video just the words "What the hell I just watched?". Glad you liked it, Veggie!

Cinnamon troll

I don't know about out of character, it always seemed pretty in character to me. Especially since it's the best solution to the problem. If a feud like that has gone on long enough that the people involved would believe a story like that, they probably shouldn't be feuding anymore.

Xeph

I actually cheered out loud when you got the intro right 😂 You definitely have seen fire benders bend through their kicks. Most bending seems to involve the whole body though - and from the training we've seen both from Katara and Aang, and from Zuko and Iroh bending seems to be linked to the energy flow through the body. It certainly posits an interesting thought experiment, what a physical disability would mean for a bender. Can they not bend anymore? Or are they just weaker and can only do certain moves? Or do they have to relearn everything? Katara has come such a long way! But she still has to learn a lot. Last episode we learned that she can only bend water she can see. We then saw her bend unseen water, but it took a lot of concentration, time, and the help of Aang. So in the heat of a battle wet earth is pretty much unbendable to her. That episode you were also surprised by her bending ice. We've seen her do that before. In the beginning on the fire nation ship in the south pole. Back then she did it accidentally though - now she seemed to have learned to control it!

PumpkinSparks

It's the worst episode but by default. It didn't move the story forward, the plot was pretty simplistic and it ended with Aang lying about a 100 year feud which felt out of character. Still, it showcased some cool earth bending and gave Aang some leadership qualities. After seeing a range of bending from different people, have you got a favourite bending type Veggie? You'll learn more about each bending style and extra abilities as the show goes on but I was wondering where you were sitting now
