We start a much requested series today, and boy is it off to a good start! I am already enjoying the energy and humour of the show, as well as the world building!
Sorry, I get a couple of names wrong here or there. And it takes me a few minutes to realise 'Ice' isn't one of the tribes! XD ^^;

Aang and Zuko are interesting foils. Even their names start with opposite ends of the alphabet. Zuko takes things too seriously whereas Aang doesn't always take things seriously enough. Also: "I'm too young to die!" "I'm not, but I still don't wanna!" cracks me up every time.

When I first saw Appa, I just saw fluffy and I loved him, but don't worry, though he's big, he's a gentle herbivore. Favourite character is totally Uncle Iroh, though it's funny that you mention lettuce since cabbage man is also a great and central character to this story.

2025-05-21 21:09:49 +0000 UTCIroh is among everyone´s favorite list. Season 1 he has no competition apart from maybe Appa. Sokka and Zuko usually are too. By the way Sokka´s misognistic tendencies are mellowed down very quickly in the show. My favorite is a character with a disability appearing in Season 2. She, Sokka, Appa and one other animal traveling with our trio likely the ones people think that you Veggie will love the most!

The first season is the book of Water, focusing on water bending, second Earth, and third is Fire. I think Hufflepuffs would equate to the Air nomads.

2025-05-19 23:06:16 +0000 UTCI suspect the reason you thought it was a more recent show is because Netflix did do a live action version of Season 1 last year, and Seasons 2 and 3 are in development. The live version is only 8 episodes (though longer), I do think it might be worth the detour to check out the live action S1 after you finish the cartoon S1 but before you start the cartoon S2. Not necessary, but I think you might enjoy it. :) And for the record, the live action season last year is different from the live action movie which does, in fact, stink. :) You haven't met my favorite character yet. ;) Looking forward to that, as well as the rest of the series!

2025-05-19 22:51:28 +0000 UTCThis show is a true childhood favorite of mine! I'd say it's less like an anime and more like a DC superhero cartoon in terms of animation style and production. There's a sequel series called The Legend of Korra, but I don't like it nearly as much as AtLA. If you'd asked me as a kid, I'd have said Zuko is my favorite character (as I had a huge crush on him, lol), but as an adult I find Sokka the most relatable. XD

Given that you liked the first episode that much already, I have no doubt that you will love the rest of the series :D I'll be looking forward to your reactions. :) My favorite character is Iroh. (The old man travelling with prince Zuko). Also, you asked if there were spin-offs or sequels. There is one sequel called The Legend of Korra. It's quite different from this show but still pretty good. Then you also have a lot of comics and a couple of novels. A few years ago the creators announced that new content is coming. The first thing will be a movie due to be released next year, then a new show the year after.

It’s a show that isn’t afraid to be childish at times, but the storytelling is unrivaled. I couldn’t be more excited to get to see you experience it for the first time 😁

2025-05-19 17:52:17 +0000 UTCJust thought I'd clarify some names as they are presented in this episode: Sokka and Katara (the water tribe siblings); Aang (the Airbender); Appa (the fluffy snot monster, ie flying bison); Gran-Gran (obvious I suppose but I included it anyway); Prince Zuko (pronounced zoo-koh); also "Uncle" is how Zuko refers to his instructor. You'll learn his name and more about their relationship later.

So your reaction to him came as quite a surprise. He's like an enormous pupper 😍 As for favorite character, I freaking love every character. Even the ones I hate, I love, cause they are amazingly written. But my favs: - You don't know his name yet, but the uncle one has a very special place in my heart. Everyone deserves an uncle [name] - Prince Zuko is one of the best characters written ever, and when I watched the show for the first time I developed a huge crush on him (you might understand why later) and it doesn't help that he is voiced by Dante Basco... - you havn't met them yet and I don't want to spoil you, so all I'm gonna say is MELON LORD Also, there isn't a spin-off, but a continuation: the legend of Korra

The characters, the themes, the animation, and the world building are all top notch. The first half of season 1 is a bit up and down but after maybe episode 8, it completely hooks you.
