####### EPISODE SPOILER REVIEW BELOW! APPARENTLY SOME OF YOU ARE WATCHING FOR THE FIRST TIME ALONG SIDE ME, SO PLEASE DON'T READ BEYOND THIS POINT UNTIL YOU HAVE SEEN THE EPISODE YOURSELF! ######

------

Haha, this was fantastic! Easily episode of the season so far?? Maybe!

So I mentioned in my first ever Buffy video, I had 'heard' there was a musical episode, but this was SO DIFFERENT from what I expected!

We get so much character development done in what is essentially a 'gimmick' episode, and I loved every second!

Let me know which was your favourite song!!

Hope you guys are having a great week!

As always, if you click the video just after this post, you may need to  download it first.  This should be fixed in a couple of hours!

Sweet is one of my favourite villains and i think is the only non-my villain to ever win during his appearance. He appears, does exactly what he wants in to cause chaos and devastate the group and populous by revealing their secrets and then leaves not only unkilled (might be a show first) but completely unharmed. I am not sure the group could even harm him with present weapons he seems like an upper level demon like the head of the vengence demons we have seen Anya with they are like demigods.

James McCarthy

This episode is such perfection, there are so many things about it I love. There's so much clever writing in it--the triple internal rhyme of 'I've got a theory we should work this out. / It's getting eerie; what's this cheery singing all about?" YES, PLEASE. I think my favourite song is Walk Through the Fire, because I'm a sucker for a big counterpoint musical number. "One Day More" from Les Misérables basically set the course of my life when I saw it at age 9, LOL. Oh, the little musical vignettes along the way, the Mustard song and the Parking Ticket lady! The whole episode is such a perfect blend of winking at the absurdity (said with love) of musical theatre, but still taking itself seriously enough to be smart and moving and beautiful. I love the duet that Tara and Giles sing, it's SUCH smart writing. One of the tricks of tv musical episodes is that you have to tailor your writing to the varying levels of talent, experience, and comfort that each cast member has with singing. Tara and Giles are two of the best singers in the cast, but there's really no obvious reason for those two characters to sing together. Finding that parallel between them preparing to walk away from relationships was a brilliant way to get them to duet. The Xena musical episode "The Bitter Suite" came a couple years before this, and was one of the inspirations for this episode--particularly the way it too wasn't just a silly stand-alone gimmick episode, but progressed ongoing storylines. Random personal anecdote about this episode--I attended a sing-along screening of it at a convention once, and when the Demon made his entrance for his villain song, someone got up at the front of the room and started acting out his part, including all the tap dancing! Which would be fun enough on it's own, but the best part? He was a KLINGON, in full cosplay. A Tap. Dancing. Klingon. :D

Elizabeth Rose

I think it's a pretty good metaphor - they don't just "dance themselves to death." Musical theatre, and particularly the songs in musical theatre, express emotions that the characters would never just say out loud in normal speech (VERY literally portrayed in "I'll Never Tell"). So when those emotions are forced out all at once, it can cause... combustion, especially if that person has a lot of suppressed feelings (like Buffy). Like Marcie becoming invisible because no one noticed her way back in season 1. It doesn't seem that farfetched to me from a hellmouth perspective.

Tommy Ross

So glad you're finally here! This is actually the first Buffy episode I ever watched. So you can imagine my surprise when I went back to the beginning, and Buffy didn't seem to have a sister, but she did have a very present mother. Also one of my favorite experiences was being the music director and accompanist for a live production of songs from both this and Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog (another Joss Whedon musical). The title of this program... "You Beat the Bad Guy." Because yes, we had to. Such amazing nerds make up this community.

Tommy Ross

All the songs and story arcs are great, and I love how so many songs reprise and duet. I do wish there had been time to work more on the main story. They dance themselves to death??? It's weird Giles wants Buffy to go to battle by herself when her problem is with life skills, not slaying. And geez Tara, way to leave Dawn alone to get kidnapped, you couldn't look up that flower later? Least favorite is the Dawn demon sequence, just way too long. This show is actually 10 minutes longer than other episodes, that could have been trimmed. Favorite is the Giles Tara duet, sounds amazing and the synching of the storylines is amazing!

tvshrine

I love Spike so much however my favourite song isn’t his, it’s walk through the fire but I do love something to sing about and where do we go from here!! But also standing x under your spell reprise, Sweet’s songs, rest in peace and I’ll never tell are all amazing too. Honestly, it’s banger after banger tbh. What I will say is, this is one of my favourite episodes from the season but also the show. It popularised musical episodes across television but it’s also leagues above all the other ones I’ve seen. They never progress the plot like this one, it’s not a special standalone.. it’s integral to the plot of the season and the gimmick is integral to the plot of the episode. Buffy would never have admitted this otherwise!! The gang wouldn’t have let all these secrets out otherwise!! I honestly love it so much, Buffy’s scene admitting she was in heaven always makes me cry. P.s. Pretty certain you can look up the music from the Gift now!!

SPOILER WALL FOR BUFFY AND ANGEL Faith tries to apologize to Buffy in the Angel episode "Sanctuary", but Buffy threatens to beat her to death if she tries to. She never tries to apologize to her other surviving victims though (i.e. Xander, Riley, Wesley etc.). Willow seems (to me at least) genuinely sorry when she is frantically apologizing to Dawn after crashing the car and when she apologizes to Anya for destroying the Magic Box in the episode "Same Time, Same Place", but she never apologizes to Tara (she does acknowledge it will take a lot of effort to reconnect with Tara in "Entropy" but Tara asks if they can skip it and I wouldn't be surprised if she apologized to her earlier off screen). Spike tells Buffy that he can't say he's sorry in the episode "Beneath You" and never apologizes to her. Also, he taunts her about it in the same episode. He does show remorse for what he did to Buffy imo, but for no one else. He even dismisses any responsibility he has for the death of Nikki Wood in the episode "Lies My Parents Told Me". He doesn't show remorse for any of his victims besides Buffy until the Angel episode "Damage". In summary, they all shows signs of remorse, but there is more that they can do to make amends imo. SPOILER WALL FOR ANGEL & FAITH COMIC SERIES I should add that Faith does talk to Riley about taking advantage of him in volume 2.

Lime Pie

Do any of the characters ever actually apologise to their victims, in a genuinely meaningful way (Willow says a lot of things that I don't think she means, in order to pacify people)? I genuinely can't remember them doing so- with Willow, it's just swept under the rug and the addiction storyline becomes central; the soul story for Spike; and Faith briefly breaks down before fleeing and then later returning to torture Wesley with no remorse. All three are rather selfish characters. But at least they're not Warren...

Jake M

MORE SPOILERS BELOW Sorry in advance for the long post. It turns out I had a lot to say. I actually agree that Faith and Willow are not apologetic (at first). However, I still maintain that their characters are driven by their guilt. There are plenty of examples that Faith repressed her guilt because it was her method of coping (e.g. Faith telling Buffy she didn't care that she killed a human and accidentally admitting that she felt sorry about it the next episode), which lead her into a self-destructive spiral until Angel got her to open up. As for Willow, the utter lack of remorse arises from her addiction to magic. A severe addiction, which is how dark magicks are depicted (e.g. "They were working the dark magicks, and got addicted. And now they're gone. Gone, as in, there's nothing left. I've never met anyone with the strength to quit before." - Sam), left unchecked as long as Willow's has, trains the brain to only process the pleasure that the addiction brings and to neglect the harm. After Willow hurts Dawn though, she changes her attitude and admits to Buffy that she was out of control and needs help. All three of the characters in question are terrible people imo, and personally, I would choose to not associate myself with any of them if they existed in real life. Since they are fictional characters though, I'm more interested in how entertaining they are. For me, Spike is amazing as a foil to Buffy, especially this season when they get close and bring out the worst in each other, and I love how his chip contrasts a soul, but he is really boring when he becomes a "Buffy can do no wrong" repeat of Angel in season 3. Faith and Willow on the other hand are always interesting to me. In fact, I would say Willow is my favorite character with Buffy right behind her.

Lime Pie

Spike doesn't back off on his own, but he's also a freaking vampire. People seem to forget that his a vampire with no soul, and that chip doesn't change any of that. Willow and Faith are not in that boat. I give Faith more grace than Willow because of her history, but the two of them still do not get the treatment they should for the things they do (particularly Willow). She can do no wrong for many people.

Hanneli Norrgard

Yes!!! Love me some Nathan Fillion! But yeah, I agree that the earlier seasons are much better

Katie

That much i can agree with! It's incredibly toxic, destructive and more akin to obsession on Spike's part than love, in my opinion- at least until he gets a soul, but then I don't recall him saying as much about his feelings for her in season 7 (only seen it twice, so again I may have forgotten or overlooked points. I much prefer season 1-4 than 5-7, even though season 7 has Nathan Fillion in it who I love 😆)

Jake M

I totally understand you not wanting to watch it again. I could never watch it again, it's horrific. She has to throw him against a wall to get him off her. Then he later blames her and calls her a b*tch. I will never understand fans that ship them. It was never a love story, only a toxic relationship.

Katie

Something I don't think you picked up on because you were talking about Terror potentially leaving - she sings about how horrifying Willow messing with her mind is, because that's exactly what Glory did- so clearly she remembers the pain and suffering!

Jake M

I sincerely apologise, I've misremembered the episode then- for personal reasons I've only seen that episode once and I might have to skip it when Veggie gets to it. In my memory, he backs off and runs away in horror once he realises what he's done, and that's the incentive for him to regain his soul, because he doesn't ever want to do it again. I've edited the original comment. Faith and Willow don't seem the least apologetic, in my view. Take Willow - when Tara realises what's she's done, messing with her mind (just like Glory- that reprise is chilling), her instinct is to make her forget again- not exactly the behaviour of a remorseful person!

Jake M

For some reason, your copy of the episode played at about 1.05x speed - that's why everyone sounds a bit off, and the male voices are more noticeable.

Dipper

Walk through the fire and Let me rest in piece are my 2 favorites.

Shiby23

I CANNOT believe we're already at this episode. I love this one so much. ICONIC. I can't believe it was Xander either and he just didn't tell anyone. It was one thing to go around pretending to be as clueless as everyone else and complain about it being a nightmare, but he should've admitted it when people started combusting. Maybe they could have stopped the demon faster. The demon wasn't named in the episode but was credited as Sweet. He is my ultimate favourite Buffy villain. He did, in fact, bring the fun in. I also especially loved the way he delivered the line "I think it all worked out just fine" at the end. Great comedic timing. He was a Broadway star if I'm not wrong. My fav song is and forever will be Walk Through the Fire. Even the visuals with the fire trucks was perfection. 2nd fav is Sweets' intro song when Dawn was kidnapped. 3rd is Spike's Let Me Rest in Peace. I also loved every single line Giles sang in Where Do We Go From Here and Anya's Bunnies rock anthem LOL. He's got a fantastic voice but my annoyance at his character for blaming Buffy for still adjusting after death prevented me from 💯 enjoying his song. Also, yeah, everyone's voice in this episode was pitched. Not sure why as I've never noticed it when I've watched it before...

Nyssa Rawther 🍉

one of my all time favorite episodes of TV! - I love that they shy away from the gimmick of musical episodes not progressing the plot. this episode is the exact opposite. every single song sang by a main character serves to progress the plot in a meaningful way - I really enjoy how Spike is trying to rush Buffy away so he doesn't sing in front of her and then he ends up singing the most incredible ballad/rock hit about being so in love with her that he'll accept being used just to be close to her - "Walk Through the Fire" is phenomenal! So many great parts: love the overlays of Tara/Spike/Sweet as they sing lines while Buffy sings. love the feeling of numbness Buffy is speaking to. love love love Willow's line of "I think this line's mostly filler." loooove the firetrucks as the Scoobies say "let it burrrrrnnnnnn." - I know some others may not like this, but personally I like when musical episodes employ the use of both diegetic and non-diegetic musical numbers. In my opinion it makes for interesting exposition. Also I find it fairly clear when this is happening. - SMG not wanting to sing but deciding she absolutely could not let anyone else sing Buffy's big reveal of being pulled out of heaven is one of the reasons I will always love SMG. She saw the importance of that revelation and felt it in her heart. GREAT reaction (as always) Veggie!!! Glad you loved this episode and would love to hear what you think on a re-watch :)

brittany

Same here! My family and friends probably still get triggered if they hear the opening strains of "Under Your Spell" -- I played it over and over again and sang along (badly I'm sure) every time 😆

Alicia Patron

I loved this episode so much that I bought the soundtrack CD and played it over and over and over again, probably to the major annoyance of my family haha. It's so relatable every time a new song came on you were like, NO, maybe THIS is the best song :D

Speaking of bunnies. The Bunny Museum in Altadena, California, was burned to the ground by the Eaton Fire. The "world's only museum about everything bunny" housed nearly 50,000 bunny-related artifacts and had been a beloved landmark for nearly three decades. https://www.soapcentral.com/human-interest/sorry-is-gone-tearful-bunny-museum-co-owner-speaks-iconic-altadena-landmark-burns-ground

Mexican is also not a language lol

Dutchkel

This was one of my favorite episodes as a kid, I remember being over the moon about the Spuffy kiss at the end! 😆

Madikuma95

I'm one of the very very few who hates this episode (bottom five for me). I can't stand musical episodes of non-musical TV shows, but, oddly enough, like certain actual musical movies. It annoys me that there's so much progression in this episode because I skip it every single time I re-watch, except when watching a reactor.

Hanneli Norrgard

anya says "his penis got diseases from a chumash tribe!" because in season 4 episode 8 xander is cursed with syphillis by a vengeful native american spirit after accidentally discovering a sunken mission. michelle trachtenburg does the whole ballet number by herself, no stunt doubles. she's a trained dancer. as for singing, both james marsters and amber benson are vocally trained. (plus obviously anthony stewart head). and everybody used their actual voices- sarah wasn't going to but when she realized how monumental the episode was she decided to make it work. the buffy fandom calls the demon in this episode 'sweet' as that's what he's listed as in the credits, and we all love him just as much as you do! if there's a heaven he's made it up there despite being a demon, because no plane in which this man doesn't exist could be considered anything but hell. you're one of the only reactors i've seen who doesn't freak out and get confused about why they're still singing after sweet leaves. nobody seems to understand that he crop-dusted them with his magic lol something i love about where do we go from here is that they literally go "the curtains close on a kiss god knows" and not a single first time reactor has caught it and realized what that alley scene was gonna turn into lol buffy didn't kiss spike because of what he said to her in the bronze- she kissed him because she was numb. listen to what she sings right before she kisses him- "this isn't real, but i just wanna feel" my favorite song is dawn's dance/sweet's introduction (i count them as one song because i genuinely wouldn't be able to pick a favorite if i didn't). i wouldn't say walk through the fire is such a perfect song that the only reason you'd choose rest in peace over it is because you like spike- rest in peace is just objectively a prettier song, it's a solo by someone with musical training. also- i'm pretty sure 'under your spell' is the fandom shoe-in, not 'rest in peace' i really think giles is just being a fucking bastard. veggie your attitude is not wrong, buffy needs time. to think someone went through hundreds of years of torment yet also believe that they're behind schedule because they're not back to normal after a couple months is demented behavior. how goddamn self-centered do you have to be to think that it's YOU keeping her back and not the awful horrible trauma she's endured? she needs to actually have a reasonable amount of time to get past her trauma before you try and determine whether she's "too far gone". that'd be like determining somebody will never beat cancer because it didn't happen in 3 chemo sessions.

esme

Such a brilliant episode. A lot of shows have done the same gimmick but as far as I'm aware, none have come close to matching with this one. The reason for that is because, as you say, it's not just a gimmick, it's actually a device to get these characters to open up. There's a beautiful message throughout this episode that says we can process our feelings and complex emotions through music. Buffy would've kept that secret to her next death but when you sing, you bare your soul.

Inseriousity

Alyson Hannigan begged Joss not to make her sing too much because she recognized her musical limitations. Even so, she sings one of my favorite lines: "I think this line's mostly filler". I hope you will rewatch this episode on your own. There are so many subtle moments, Easter eggs, and amazing character moments. Most of which I discovered on my 5th, 6th, and 10th rewatch.

thompur

Exactly. Spike never stopped himself. Buffy had to stop him. He was extremely violent with her. Just because Spike wasn't able to go through with what he intended it was still obviously traumatising for Buffy. She experienced PTSD from it. We see her having flashbacks and being fearful of Spike when he's around her

Katie

This was written by Joss Whedon. I believe over like a weekend? He may be a wrong-un, but he's extremely talented

x_Rhi_x

I listen to the soundtrack on Spotify often... and I absolutely cannot pick a favorite song. Xander and Anya's duet gets stuck in my head most often, though. :D

Denni Caid

SPOILER. PLEASE DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN PAST THIS EPISODE. Jake - I want to start by clarifying that I genuinely mean no offense with this reply, only to discuss what you said. However, I have to take issue with your claim that Spike stops himself. He doesn't stop himself, Buffy does. And while I agree that there a lot more comments bashing Spike than Faith or Willow, I don't think that we should pretend that Faith and Willow are let off with a slap on the wrist by either the audience or the show. All three of them are rightfully depicted as in the wrong for their actions and their characters are driven by their guilt for what they have done.

Lime Pie

You can see her laughing in the background after it happens

Helen Brand

Funny you said “ careful Tara by that pillar “ Amber Benson was at a convention panel and said in that scene as she walked off she went face into that pillar

Michael Matthews

Finally my favourite episode! The mustard song is living rent free in my brain :D

Moonlight

"Tabula Rasa" is Latin, not Mexican 🤣

Jake M

Xander's diseases on his penis refers to Pangs in season 4 when he got mystical syphilis (this show is so gd weird lol)

Colleen

It's not just Xander, the entire audio seems off. There is a DVD extra on that episode I will recommend for the end of season interlude. But to answer some of your questions, Joss Whedon wrote the whole damn thing. Music and all. Apparently they had music nights while filming where he played the piano, James would play guitar and the others would sing for fun. James has been in a band forever and Tony Head has proven he's a great singer in S4 already. Michelle Trachtenberg was uncomfortable with singing and because of her background in dance/ballet she got a dance number. The Mustard guy is writer/producer David Fury and the parking ticket lady is writer/producer Marty Noxon. Now back to the episode... EDIT: And this, my hoarse friends because we all know we sang along, is the reason why almost all TV have a musical episode at some point. Back then it was such a hype. The soundtrack made it to No 3 on the US soundtrack charts and No 7 on Germany's Top 100. They produced a music video for "Walk through the fire" and I remember it was played over and over on German music channels. And yes, I'll admit "Rest in peace" is my favourite, simply because it's most similar to my own taste. Finally I wanted to add something that has been on my mind for a while. I agree with Veggie about the timing of Giles' decision to no longer stand in Buffy's way. But this has been a theme for a while with all of them, leaving Buffy alone to deal with the responsibilities. In real time there were only 6 weeks between Joyce dying and Buffy dying. Riley had left her 6 weeks before that. Now we are in week 7 since she was raised from the dead. They piled up chore after chore on her and do very little to really help. "Oh, your boyfriend left you? Here is a troll to fight that we accidently summoned." "Oh, your mom just died? Here is the guadianship and financial responsibility for your teenage sister!" "Oh, you were just resurrected from the dead? You are financially ruined now and we lived in your house for free!" There is a line from the "Replacement" episode, when insecure Xander says "I don't help, I get in trouble and then Buffy saves me!" Nobody really sees how much Buffy has to deal with and they just won't let her deal with it on her own time.

JosieMorita

Beware the immortal words: “Written and directed by Joss Whedon” yes, he wrote the music too.

Garry (Not Jerry)

Thanks 🤣

Jake M

I don’t disagree, but…you did accidentally call her “Tara” in the third paragraph 😆

Garry (Not Jerry)

Claire Eyles

SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER The writers seemed obsessed with consent and assault this season :/ disguised in this episode but more obvious elsewhere, I see a lot of comments online bashing Spike but far fewer bashing Faith and Willow who also commit SA/R over the course of the series. Of the three, Spike is the only one who realises it's wrong! (Not that that's any defence, but it's at least something which the other two never cop to)

Jake M

Omg I literally checked an hour ago to see if this was posted, drive home and checked again and its here 😍

CeNedra

VEGGIE YES ALL MY PATRONAGE HAS LED TO THIS MOMENT! 🎉

Alysha

Ah yes, the fun happy musical episode, where Willow sexually assaults Tara by removing her ability to give informed consent, and Buffy attempts suicide. I'm not sure if I have a favourite song in this episode, to be honest. The demon, 'Sweet' was played by the legendary Hinton Battle, who sadly died on Feb 5 2024. Hinton Battle was a Tony award winning legend of Broadway, who played the original role of the The Scarecrow in The Wiz (a role later reprised by Michael Jackson in the movie adaptation), and was one of the first African American male dancers to receive a scholarship to The School of American Ballet, where he trained under George Balanchine (amongst many other notable achievements). He was given the honour of having the lights of Broadway dimmed in his honour after he passed.

Claire Eyles

On the whole: one of the best episodes of this season. But, continuing reason #3 for not liking this season from last ep: "Under Your Spell" was a fridge horror moment for me, following my second viewing. Terror has such a great voice, and the song sounds so romantic. On first watch it's a lovely, albeit bittersweet, set piece, where the audience knows everything isn't as perfect as it sounds, because Willow is relying on magic to maintain their relationship. This distracts you from the reality that Terror is not in her right mind, and Willow takes advantage of her- she's LITERALLY under her spell. Casting the memory spell to stop her partner being mad and forget their arguments is tantamount to drugging someone to alter their behaviour. In which case, their heavily implied having sex at the end of the song ("you make me come...plete") is really not okay. It's at this juncture I decided I couldn't justify liking Willow anymore. Up to this point she was one of my favourite characters, along with Giles. I still love season 1-4 Willow (season 5 she starts getting iffy - you should absolutely pay Anya for the ingredients, witch!), but what she does to Terror this season is unforgivable. She's no longer on my Christmas card list. Sorry to get so serious, especially given it's my first Buffy comment of the New Year- but this episode has a parade of red flags regarding consent. 🚩🚩🚩 The fact that it's not addressed sickens me somewhat.

Jake M

Favourite song is the reprise with both Tara and Giles singing together. Beautiful!

Garry (Not Jerry)

Yes! The day has finally come!

Woohoo, it’s here!
