####### EPISODE SPOILER REVIEW BELOW! APPARENTLY SOME OF YOU ARE WATCHING FOR THE FIRST TIME ALONG SIDE ME, SO PLEASE DON'T READ BEYOND THIS POINT UNTIL YOU HAVE SEEN THE EPISODE YOURSELF! ######

------

This one was brilliant, but MY WORD it made me uncomfortable!!

It is so hard to not weirdly blame Wes... though he is 100% not to blame, seeing 'that side of him' was actually terrifying and heartbreaking.

I love Fred.

Gunn is only in this one a little, but he is awesome! Love his attempt to keep Fred safe from him.

And I guess... we are done with Billy? XD

Hope you guys are having a great week!

As always, if you click the video just after this post, you may need to  download it first.  This should be fixed in a couple of hours!

As a survivor myself, I don't really blame the show for making Wesley out to be a victim because he *is*. His body was essentially possessed and he was forced to act out like an abuser, something that was probably triggering for him given his experience with childhood abuse. What I *do* hate, though, is the lack of emphasis on Fred's trauma. For instance, I love the small detail of Fred visiting Wes with a jacket on now - covered up, given the things he told her about her outfits. I wish we focused on her more because that experience was probably extremely traumatizing, especially because we've seen in the past that she had leaned on Wes when she was scared (3x3 That Ol' Gang of Mine for example). The Buffyverse seems to handle female victims of abuse either with kid gloves, or not at all.

BTW Happy New Year friend. I wish you all the happiness and success in the world.

I really like this episode, but it is uncomfortable viewing for sure --especially in light of what Charisma Carpenter has revealed about her working conditions under Joss Whedon during these years. At least if that is some inner part of Wesley, it is a part he doesn't allow to come to the surface ever. We can't control every thought that goes through our brains, but we can control our spoken words and actions and how they impact those around us, so I have to give Wesley credit for knowing and acting better in all other circumstances.

I do like parts of this episode. Making it out like Wesley is somehow the victim though, not so much. As a DV survivor that pisses me off quite a bit.

There is no such thing as "Primordial Misogyny", I don't believe there is any evidence of it in ancient writings. It probably developed after civilization began.

Wesley talking about women laughing at men made me think of this quote: Men are afraid that women will laugh at them. Women are afraid that men will kill them. Margaret Atwood

This episode is so uncomfortable to watch, but I think that is the point. They did a really good job on it.

Veggie - "Is there anyone named William?" Me - "The Bloody?" 🤣

I certainly didn't have Veggie jamming out to The Gorillaz during Angel on my Bingo card. Haha. I think this is a well acted episode, but it's way over the top. Not every man is a complete a-hole deep down, so if it's something inside them, not every man would react that way. I grew up in an abusive home and also was in an abusive marriage, and showing it affect all the human guys is just so wrong to me. There are good men in the world, and we shouldn't pretend otherwise. Gunn could try to fight it because he knew what was going on before it affected him. He had preparation. With someone with Wesley's past, this would absolutely destroy him, too.

This is one of my favorite episodes of Angel, but hell yes it is disturbing! I think that in the past the Buffyverse has not always been super duper awesome with how it handles domestic violence. (2x2 Beauty and the Beasts….. Buffy, we don’t tell DV victims to not get hit 🙄) But you have to walk before you can run, and I think this episode knocks it out of the park. Im not saying I think there is a dark demon inside all men, and DV isn’t gendered anyway. But the questions this raises, and what it does to Wesley who is now questioning himself and if he’s a good man….. damn. Also, the dialogue is on point, as Wesley manipulates and gaslights and verbally abuses Fred in ways that are right out of the abuser’s handbook. It’s very chilling. Ok gonna go watch your reaction now! Happy New Year! Can’t resist saying that I’m really very much looking forward to the next Buffy episode! 😁😇
