####### EPISODE SPOILER REVIEW BELOW! APPARENTLY SOME OF YOU ARE WATCHING FOR THE FIRST TIME ALONG SIDE ME, SO PLEASE DON'T READ BEYOND THIS POINT UNTIL YOU HAVE SEEN THE EPISODE YOURSELF! ######

------

Oh I can absolutely see why most watch this and the previous back to back! XD

LOVED the ending. It makes sense that Dawn was the one to finally calm Buffy, she had a BAD day!

Anya getting her fair share of great lines in this one! XD

I was... kinda hoping the LA Rams helmet would be a regular thing... probably unlikely now. XD

So the big bad is whoever built that crane, right?

Hope you guys are having a great week!

As always, if you click the video just after this post, you may need to  download it first.  This should be fixed in a couple of hours!

I just ate my un cut tunafish sandwich a few hours ago. why dirty a knife to just cut some bread? I'll cut a grilled cheese for easy dunking but unless you're putting the sandwich in a sauce to not make a mess, why cut the bread? Thats an odd thing to have an issue with veggie :P maybe thats a vegan sandwich comfort as far as not making a mess with so much veggies. even a ham/turky sandwich i still don't cut the bread. sooo weird :P

Uhh, fascinating, I didn't know that warlock wouldn't be the correct term😯. Thx for clearing that up!

Diego Zenhäusern

The tower literally was built by crazy people. The people who lost their minds after glory “ate” them.

I always struggle describing my favorite things without specifying two categories: What I would objectively consider the *best* (most well-crafted) episode of season 5 is 5x16 The Body, 100%, but my *favorite* (the one I would go back to the most) is 5x6 Family, 100%. It's so heartwarming and a beacon of hope in this dreary world

Tommy Ross

My favorite episode of season 5 is Family. It's one of my bottom three seasons, though, and not many episodes are liked by me. It spends half the season destroying Riley, and the second half just doesn't do it. The Manwich thing was a joke because it's a popular with kids (more so in Buffy days and before than now) "sandwich" filling. These first two episodes I also don't like because they feel really draggy to me. The gang is ridiculous, and they are given most of the screentime. It would have been nice to switch some of that out with more Spike/Dawn because they're great together.

Hanneli Norrgard

Best season 5 episode, 5x16 The Body. Second best and favorite season 5 episode, 5x7 Fool for love. Third best 5x22 The gift. As a whole season 5 is by far the best and my favorite season. Brilliant all around.

Vicky N

Season 5 --Fool For Love and The Body are the two best episodes of the entire series not just this season. Not that I like rewatching The Body. So favorites and "best" can be two different things. Favorite of the season is Fool for Love.

It is known to most people because it was in the movie War Games, a great eighties movie about video games. Should be your next movie watch!

I loved Anya in this one. She had a lot of funny moments. HATED Xander going "is there a point" or something like that when she was pointing out they're down a Buffy-bot, Spike and Willow at the shop. Like...use the tiny bit of brain cell you've got there, Xander. The point is glaring you in the face. His tone was so patronising, too. I loathe the way he talks down to her sometimes because she is "new" to being human.

I think Spike stayed out of guilt for not saving Dawn at the tower top which in turn led to Buffy's death. He stayed to keep her safe after Buffy died.

My favourite episode of s5 is the finale "the Gift". The score, heard here again, titled "Sacrifice" is my ultimate fav score in Buffy. 2nd fav is Family and 3rd is the Body, purely for how well it's done.

Thank you! A male witch is called a witch, not a man-witch (lol at the imagery of a sandwich though) and certainly not a warlock. Like why would you essentially walk around going, "Hi, I'm Xander, I'm an oath breaker and deceiver", which is what the word warlock means. I mean there is a reason why being deemed person non grata in a wiccan tradition is often called 'being warlocked' (ie deemed an oath breaker).

Claire Eyles

My favorite episide in Season 5 is Family. While obviously The Body was fantastically done, I can't watch it in entirety anymore since losing my own mom, nor is it "fun" to watch, so I can't name it as my favorite.

It is not man-witch, but neither is it warlock, LOL. Drives me nuts when they use that in shows, male witches calling themselves warlocks. Well, actually Charmed uses it more correctly, as the warlocks are nasty and twisted. Warlock is a derogatory term for a male witch, equivalent to a racial slur, and no self-respecting witch should call himself a warlock. The correct term for a male witch is....[insert drumroll here] witch! They are witches, no destinction between them. The reason I say Charmed has it correct is that warlock means a deceiver. If you watch the movie Warlock, the witch makes it clear that he, as a male witch, is simply called a witch. Harry Potter stories got around it by using witch and wizard, which works well with our world's well-traveled fantasy tropes and wouldn't be a derogatory term. It seems that warlock is more and more becoming integrated in our modern fiction as being a male witch, and the truth is fading away, alas. I shall still speak up against it! it is my hill to die upon! 😝 Okay, I'm being silly now.

Originally these two opening episodes for Season 6 were only written as one episode, until UPN (the new network that Buffy went over to) requested a movie length 'event'. The original draft was a lot less dramatic than what we ended up with (for example the tower doesn't collapse in the original draft). The first cut of the deer killing scene was a lot more graphic than what is shown; they had to edit a lot of it out. Alyson Hannigan really struggled with that scene as well. The Spike kicking the demon of the bike scene had to be carefully edited, because the wire work stunt of him actually kicking the guy off the bike didn't translate well on camera, so instead it ends up being more of a quick cut thing. As far as I know no one's ever said exactly why, but there are a couple of commentaries I've seen where it's hinted at that the actor who played Razor perhaps wasn't the best to work with, and probably wouldn't have been asked back. The writers wanted Buffy post crawling out of the grave to look a lot more messed up than she did. They had some pushback from either the network, or the production team, so they ended up negotiating a compromise which was to have her face with a couple of smudges of dirt and slightly ruffled hair. The original vision was to do a sort of homage to Carrie and have her walking down the street just looking wrecked with her hair plastered down with mud, and her clothes and face all messed up with filth from clawing her way out of her grave. Obviously that's not what we ended up with.

Claire Eyles

Favourite season 5 episode is definitely The Body, even though it's not an enjoyable episode to watch.

Claire Eyles

My favourite episodes of season 5 are 1, Dracula, 7 Fools For Love, and 22, The Gift. The best is 16, The Body but that does not make it my favourite, I like watching it when I'm watching the series in order but I never randomly pick it to watch on its own.

What's always been strange to me, or interesting, is that Giles left but Spike was still around... Like, Giles has some sort of life in England I guess but it always struck me as odd.

Becca Rose

I don't think Dawn was calling anyone out when she says the tower was built by crazy people, she's being totally literal 🤣 The tower was built by the people who had their minds eaten by Glory, and the cultists.

I love this episode. I kind of just view it as one long episode so I would say it’s my favourite season opener. It’s maybe tied with Anne, and I guess this and Anne do have some similarities in terms of the return of Buffy, the group separated, emotionally impactful etc. Anyway, maybe it’s me being totally insensitive but Anya’s inappropriately timed humour was really grating me this episode. I understand people view her as Autistic so it makes me feel bad criticising her, maybe I’m being like Willow to Anya in The Body when she doesn’t understand. But wanting to announce the engagement to Buffy when she’s not even responding to her name.. I feel like she’s understood that kind of social cue in the past so I just don’t get it, maybe just for comedy but it only made me mad (just to add, I’ve got ADHD, not that that gives me a pass to be nasty to Anya, I just mean I have some understanding about not thinking like the average person would). Tbh, all the scoobies were annoying me a little this episode with their reckless actions so maybe it’s me lol. But Willow’s breaking down when she realises Buffy is really gone, I think it shows she’s not been grieving or accepting Buffy’s death, instead, she’s just put all her energy into bringing her back, and now it’s really hitting her that the spell “failed”. I think the Buffy and Dawn stuff in this episode is beautiful. Dawn begging her sister to live, after Buffy’s last message to Dawn being, “The hardest thing in this world is to live in it. Be brave, Dawn. Live.” Now Dawn has to convince Buffy of the same thing, it’s just so heartbreaking. The actress Michelle (I can’t spell her last name, I don’t mean to be disrespectful) done an amazing job. It’s sad to see how miserable Buffy looks while Dawn tells her that she’s alive and that she’s home, just broken. Poor Buffy :( Top 3 episodes from season 5 (in no particular order): 5x7 Fool for Love, 5x16 The Body and 5x22 The Gift.

Giorgia M

The Gift will always be my favorite episode of the entire series, but I'm glad it didn't end the show with it.

Thanks for this Claire!! Very helpful! I have definitely heard 'Defcon 1' before, but was definitely lost with the other! XD

VEGGIE GAMER

I'm currently watching this in-beween prepping and cooking meals for the weekend. Just to answer your question about NORAD; it stands for North American Aersospace Defense Command. DEFCON 1 is basically saying a battle/war is imminent or has already begun (refers specifically to Nuclear war, but obviously in this case it means demons rampaging). Pet peeve in this episode, Willow not knowing what Xander is talking about when he says NORAD and DEFCON 1, a computer geek like Willow would absolutely know what that meant. Okay, finishing watching and then I shall be back with behind the scenes tidbits. :)

Claire Eyles

Oh wow, I actually don't remember saying that! XD I don't mind it, it means I get to see LA Rams' Dawn 20 more times! XD

VEGGIE GAMER

Interesting theory about Willow, Veggie. We've already seen evil Willow before though, as a vampire... You said 'Spike should get a bike' last episode... And he takes one in this! Kind of weird they put the shot of him riding it with Dawn in the titles before it aired.

Jake M

Woot! Can't wait to watch this!

My favourite series of episodes from season 5 (and probably the whole series) is 5x5, 5x6 & 5x7. I think my favourite episode from season 5 is 5x22 closely followed by 5x5. I think the best episode is 5x16.
