Thank you everybody! Yes, I’m feeling so much better now, even if I’m still recovering.

Hi Veggie! Happy Halloween. I hope there are no trolls around this year ;) Once again, SO much good stuff packed into these chapters. I really like the pensieve scene. I was a little disappointed in the way the movie kind of smushed all the different memories together. You get so much more detail and information in the book! I also really appreciate Dumbledore after he pulls Harry out. “Curiosity is not a sin. But we should exercise caution with our curiosity.” My one grumble with Dumbledore here is, if he recommended the cave near Hogsmeade to Sirius, why isn’t he making sure he’s getting food? Surely if anyone knows how to do that without drawing attention it would be Dumbledore! What IS Malfoy up to? There’s so much more I want to say, but most of it has already been said. I’ll end with this: I have always and will always love Neville. He doesn’t get enough appreciation by the characters in the books. He’s had to go through so much at such a young age and he’s really doing his best under a lot of pressure and stress. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts Veggie!

Pancreatitis? Yikes! That's not good :( I'm glad you're doing better!

itsanursething

In the states it was always under the bleachers. Which could work in the quidditch pitch...

Hi Veggie, hope you're doing well and enjoying all the extra stuff in both chapters! - I'm glad at this stage we're only told about Fleur making eyes at Bill and not the other way around - after all, she's only 17 and he's in his 20s! - The whole Sphinx and the riddle scene is one of my favourites in the series that's left out of the movie. - That gravity reversal illusion! If I were in that maze, it would have finished me off! As someone with a mild phobia of falling off the Earth up into the sky, it freaks me out every time I read this. (I only have a mild case though, I know for some people it's a very serious phobia and can be quite crippling! Don't mean to make light of it. PS: I just learned it's called CasAdAstraPhobia ("fall to the stars")) Happy Halloween (if you celebrate)!

It´s not just suspicion. The reveal of Snape as a DE in the Pensieve confirms Sirius thoughts shared with our Dynamic Trio. Remember what he said in the cave: ´But as far as i know, Snape was never even accused of being a Death Eater. Not that that mean much. Plenty of them were never caught. And Snape´s certainly clever and cunning enough to keep himself out of trouble.´ So the statement of Karkarov isn´t a shock to Harry, but he does turn immediately to Mad-Eye Moody what he thinks of it.

Embran

Hi Veggie, I missed the last book club, so I'm excited to be back. I was very proud of myself for figuring out the sphinx's riddle almost immediately. Although I'm not sure if I actually figured it out or just remembered the answer from my childhood. This is the first time I'm reading this book as the adult, so I was kind of surprised to realize how bad the wizarding justice system is in Chapter 30. It seems like it's all about who you know and who your friends are as opposed to evidence and presenting arguments. I know we're dealing with death eaters here, but it still seems very biased and generally un-just. Also, I love that Sirius sent a good luck card with a paw print. It's so adorable. It is a bit sad that he couldn't come to the castle as Harry's family, but it was so heartwarming to see the Weasleys there as well.

Maria

Why would Severus leave the Dark Arts? Studiying Dark Arts and being a Death Eater are two different things.

Hawwah

Happy to see you back, I hope you feel better!

Alias93

Hi, Veggie! It feels good to be back after missing out on the last two book clubs. Not to bore anyone with my personal life but the last two months have been tough. Acute pancreatitis is something I don't wish on my worst enemy. And as soon as I got better, I caught a bad case of covid which I'm still recovering from three weeks later. I fully admit I'm feeling a little bit sorry for myself :) But enough about me. The Pensieve court scene is sooo important in regards to Severus Snape! 1) First of all, did you notice how Karkaroff tells us about the crimes of every DE he names, except for Severus? Dolohov tortured people, Travers murdered somebody etc. But when it comes to Severus, Karkaroff's only accusation is that he was a member. That's all. He doesn't report any crimes Severus committed. Why? Probably because there's nothing to report. Also notice how Karkaroff brought up Severus as the very last name, when he was desperate. Talk about scraping the bottom of the barrel. All of this tells me that Severus never was a very active or zealous Death Eater. 2) It's confirmed that Severus left Voldemort and joined the Order BEFORE Voldemort's downfall. That means BEFORE Lily's death. That's very important. Severus turned away from Voldemort when the latter was at the peak of his power. He became a spy for the Order, knowingly putting himself in mortal danger. This tells us so much about Sev's character! It shows us his immense bravery, his selflessness, but also his determination to bring down Voldemort. It shows us how much he regretted ever joining him. Now compare Severus with Karkaroff, Malfoy and others who denounced Voldemort only after his downfall, when it was beneficial for them. You could say Severus turned away from Voldemort before it was cool. It's even more impressive when you realize Severus was only 20 years old when he switched sides and became a spy for the Order. Which also means he couldn't have been a DE for that long. It's even possible it was just a few months. I personally think Severus started wondering what the hell he had gotten himself into shortly after joining Voldemort. He's not exactly a DE material. He has always been a bookish, academic type, not a thug. Running around in a mask doing DE stuff is so out of his character.

behind the pumpkin patch! or behind the greenhouses!

Andrew K

you’re definitely right about Harry’s reaction. “And he trusts Snape? Ron said. “He really trusts Snape, even though he knows he was a Death Eater?” “Yes,” said Harry. It would’ve been nice to hear a bit more from Harry, or at least even learn his emotion when saying “yes”

Andrew K

Hi Veggie Just a quick edit to my previous book club comment. When you read it out I cringed when you said 'I laugh at people', I definitely didn't mean that just meant I find it funny when people assume harry only knows expelliarmus. Both of these are two of my favourite chapters in this book. Chapter 30 When I first read the book I didn't expect fudge to be discriminative like that, I was so shocked. I love the extra court scenes in the book and poor Neville. First time I read what happened to his parents I was completely horrified I can't imagine how long they were tortured to actually lose their sanity. It explains a lot about Neville and that just shows you how awful Snape is to him considering Snape is Neville's worst fear and nothing to do with his parents. Chapter 31 Loved that Bill and Mrs Weasley came as Harry's family. Amos annoying me again. Mrs Weasley should listen to her own comments about Rita Skeeter aka witch weekly article. So glad Harry rectifies Hermiones reputation in Mrs Weasley's eyes. The third task is so awesome in the book. My favourite part is the sphinx and I was impressed Harry was able to figure the riddle out. Perhaps the maze was the reason for the blast ended skrewt lessons lol All the best 👍 Happy Halloween to you and Woozle 😊

Liz

The pensive is a top 5 chapter in the series for me. Absolutely love this one!!!!

Raider Max

Happy Halloween Veggie and Woozle! 🎃👻 Out of all the magical objects we have discovered so far, the pensieve is one of my favorites! Having the means to perfectly recall events from your life would be an incredible gift. However, I wonder if there would be a caveat, like with the Mirror of Erised? Do you think to some extent, Dumbledore meant for Harry to discover the pensieve? The 3rd is famously the worst adaptation of a task in the movie, yet SO action packed in the book! Ultimately, I believe Dumbledore was onto something by letting Harry compete in the tournament…. the “controlled” dangers he had to face this year put pressure on him to hone new skills and learn advanced spells that he might not have otherwise (Ron and Hermione a bit as well). The Golden Trio needs to be competent if they want to defeat the Dark Lord one day!

Elizabeth D

I just wanna say that Ron inventing goblins names on the exam is the best thing ever xD

Mordimer

Hi Veggie! In chapter 30 an Augustus Rookwood is mentioned. He must be descended from or related to Victor Rookwood from Hogwarts Legacy! I think the memories do a really good job of showing the atmosphere in the wizarding world after Voldemort's fall. Downtrodden but out for revenge. Harry waving back at little Gabrielle in chapter 31 is so cute! Also, Molly must be about 10 to 20 years older than Harry's parents to have known the gamekeeper before Hagrid, as he was already 43 when Lily and James were in first year.

Ree

I don't think that Dumbledore having a big reaction to the Nagini thing would have been good, because Dumbledore wants to calm harry down and reassure him. Calmly listening to him and saying he believes him is what I think Harry needs! Plus I think the pacing he does after shows he is worried, even if he doesn't want Harry to know that. It's not especially good practice for a teacher to react loudly to their pupils concerns. It's the same vibe as "Dumbledore asked calmly" I think. Although I think Dumbledore made mistakes, I still think he was trying his best.

Ree

Morfin is convicted by the Ministry of the murders of Tom Riddle Senior and his parents. Frank was accused of the murders by the Muggles, as he's being the only person who had the opportunity to kill them. It is possible that the Ministry intervened to get Frank off the charges, because they already had Morfin in custody for the murders. Although that seems unlikely.

S1lm4r1l

no big deal, would not change my comment ether way. just good to correct my timeline.

Garfnob

Hi Veggie! Having read the series many times, it’s sometimes hard to remember when we (and Harry) actually learn things for the first time. I'm pretty sure this is the first moment we learn that Snape was a Death Eater. I'm surprised by how little reaction Harry has upon learning this. Is it a combination of Harry already suspecting it and a complete trust in Dumbledore, as in, he believes Dumbledore wouldn’t vouch for Snape unless he was 100% sure Snape had left the Dark Arts completely? What was your reaction? (Even though it's hard to say since you’ve already seen the movies.)

Hairy Pothead

Yeah, this is told in a flashback at the very beginning of this book, before Frank goes to investigate the house. In HBP we find out what really happened by seeing Morfin's memory, and we get the wizarding world side of the story as Morfin is convicted for the murders by the ministry, but the muggle side with Frank being accused and then released is covered in this book.

Alias93

"I'm pretty sure Veggie already knows the people from the village didn't like Frank, it was covered in the first chapter of the book." - was it? i thought that was in The Half-blood Prince when we are finding out Voldemort killed his family and Frank was accused of the crime. you are probably correct.

Garfnob

It's really only two scenes they needed to blend since Bagman wasn't in the movie, and I don't think they did it well. Barty Crouch Jr being present in a trial where Karkaroff is about to spit out names is quite stupid. In the book he was there to be sentenced which makes sense. Blending the Crouch getting sentenced and Karkaroff giving evidence scenes made the movie scene nonsensical. So not a very clever blend imo. Cutting out Bellatrix was also a shame, although not necessary.

Me Here

I was more thinking about Harry giving a description of the house, which Dumbledore might have recognized as the Riddle house. But then again it's not very clear at which point Harry's vision starts since everything is from Frank's pov. I'm pretty sure Veggie already knows the people from the village didn't like Frank, it was covered in the first chapter of the book. Maybe you're referring to them not liking the Riddle family?

Alias93

@Alias93 " I assume Dumbledore kept an eye on the village were Voldemort's family grew up just in case. " - defiantly the case, but Veggie does not know that part yet. Dumbledore is likely only reading a few special papers. "If only Harry had remembered more from his dream during the summer and had been able to tell Sirius" - did Harry hear the caretaker's name? i do not think he did, so the house could be anywhere.

Garfnob

@ H "In a local newspaper that would probably be front page news for months, to be fair!" - not for a person the town does not like, but Veggie does not know that part yet. even if it was that is a lot of papers to get.

Garfnob

Hi Veggie! "They do not recognise him" (regarding Neville's parents) is one of the saddest lines in the whole book series for me. The description of Hermione's behaviour while realizing something about Rita Skeeter is really funny to me, for some reason. I sometimes act things out like that myself when I'm trying to concentrate really hard on something. Thanks again for hours of fun!

H

Yeah, I assume Dumbledore kept an eye on the village where Voldemort's family grew up just in case. If only Harry had remembered more from his dream during the summer and had been able to tell Sirius, I'm sure he would have passed the information to Dumbledore, who might have gone to investigate in the Riddle house. Could have put a stop to everything before it even started...

Alias93

Now that I think about it, I wonder what Dumbledore and Fawkes were up to during the later part of OotP after they left the school. I guess they must have sticked together since Fawkes came with him to the ministry at the end.

Alias93

I thought about it too, I guess the conversation with Sirius earlier in the book kind of covers the fact that Crouch Senior was neglectful of his son, but then again the book will go into details later about how BCJ was disappointed in his father, so it might still be a bit leading imo. But yes, at this point the book is actively going against what the movie showed us (the trial scene), so we shouldn't use the movies as a justification for mentionning future stuff.

Alias93

"A caretaker gone missing could not be more than a passing note in a local paper, there has to be hundreds of them" In a local newspaper that would probably be front page news for months, to be fair! Maybe he's followed that local newspaper a bit more because of the Voldy connection. Otherwise he would have to read A LOT of newspapers, as you say!

H

Is your Barty Crouch jr theory possibly a bit spoiler-ish since we at this point in the book doesn't know for sure if he was innocent? EDIT: I might already disagree with myself over this since it would be quite an extreme book/film-change, but then again... I wouldn't put it past them. EDIT 2: I see that you have removed the Barty Crouch jr theory now :-) Really looking forward to hear your sad headcanon at some point when possible!

H

Maybe the Sorting Hat keeps Fawkes busy? it could also be going on flights like Hedwig. Maybe even important long distance relations by Dumbledore. And the bird is that strong it might carry bigger parcels than an owl can lol.

Embran

"Wild? I was absolutely livid!" Regarding last book club quote, cockroach clusters are from Monty pythons crunchy frog sketch which may or my not have another harry potter reference in it. So quite a different pensieve scene than the film a lot less dramatic and you get a nice bit of character building for Karkaroff, Bagman, Crouch and his son, and you also now know the actual fate of Neville's parents. With Mrs Weasleys reminiscence about her time at Hogwarts I can't help but wonder what the Hogwarts version of behind the bikesheds would be? Regarding the third task in the film all I can say is we were robbed. It's really odd that Rita skeeter is in the movies as she has no actual plot purpose, I think I'd have preferred them to keep the blast ended skrewts subplot instead at lest then we could have had something in the maze.

Simon audsley

Hi Veggie Chapter 30 * I like how Dumbledore is described as speaking calmly in his explanation of Snape being a Death Eater, but in the movie, he shouts again. * I like how the movie blended all three trials into one scene, with Skeeter present and Karkaroff giving evidence on Barty Jr. * It's interesting that Dumbledore reads the Muggle newspapers. Chapter 31 * How is Skeeter getting this information? Hermione seems to have worked it out. What do you think about it? * I love that the Weasleys came to support Harry. It shows that they see him as family. * I can't wait to see the third task in the TV show. It sounds so exciting. * I found Harry trying to work out the riddle quite funny.

Connor Wilkinson

Hi Veggie! If no one knew the names of the other death eaters it would be a lot easier for there to be spies and even double spies, like Snape. Ah, the McKinnons. In the Marauders era fandom, Marlene McKinnon is actually a primary character. Ludo's trial just goes to show you how fame can impact how people are viewed, especially when it comes to justice. Also, I have a very sad headcanon about Neville and his parents, but that will come later :) Sheesh, Amos is getting really cheeky. Also, I never realized how much older Bill is to Fleur, like 5 or 6 years, woah. Weird that Mrs. Weasley is criticizing Mr. Diggory considering that she did the same thing. Have a great day Veggie and Woozle, also happy late birthday!

Grace S

She seems to be a clever lass, perhaps she speaks multiple languages?

Jo Winters

Hey Veggie! I know its just a minor thing, but Fawkes is still around! i don't remember him in this movie. Would be interesting what Dumbledore has to do, to take care of Fawkes. Does a Phoenix get bored? Do you have to have playtime with a Phoenix? Hope you and Woozle are doing great!

Jonas (Methanoutput)

I'm currently rereading the books and I'm on Goblet of Fire right now. I haven't gotten to these chapters yet, but from what I remember there's a lot of stuff in these chapters (and in this book in general) that either don't appear in the movie or is changed in the movie from how they were in the book. Dumbledore and Harry talking about Neville's parents for example was left out of the movie. The 3rd task is a lot different in the book and so was the 1st task. The 2nd task in the movie was the most "faithful" to the book but even that had some differences. Molly and Bill aren't seen in the movie at all.

John Phillips

Hello Veggie and Woozle! The scene in the book in which Harry and Cedric decide to take the cup together is so powerful. I love that they're both being selfless and noble about it, but also that they clearly both really want to win. It would be far less effective for either of them to not care about it. Real integrity is doing what is right even when it's hard, even when no one's there to judge you. (Even when you have more than the movie-allotted two seconds to think and discuss, because it's an important character scene that makes for more emotional impact than a couple of yells in a whirlwind of evil leaves, but I'm not here to criticize the movie, I'm staying positive, I'm staying positive). I also really love Harry's thoughts when he's falling asleep about sympathy for Neville and fury at Voldemort, the way he felt support for the people who were applauding the life sentence in Azkaban of the Death Eaters(?) before remembering that one of them was barely an adult and died a year later. Really brings home the tragedy of the situation. We don't know if he was guilty or not -- the wizard court system seems incredibly corrupt -- but either way, was that verdict worth applauding? Also an answer to one of the questions you've had: Crouch suggests a sentence in Azkaban for Bagman "lasting no less than- " so there are Azkaban sentences that aren't for life!

Q

Hi Veggie! I always liked that the books included many more spells than the movies. And more useful ones at that! It really showed how you'd probably begin to just incorporate magic in your daily life through these school years, and eventually into adulthood. I particularly liked the 4-points spell Point Me! As a kid I was in Guiding (like Scouts) so we learned how to use a compass, but if I was magical I would use little spells like this way more often! (It would save from having to carry a compass around all the time since I'd likely always have my wand anyway!). What useful spell would you like to use (one that you've read about already, OR one you think they should have to use)? No spoilers about ones that might get mentioned later, just wondering your ideas! Hope you are well.

SavageKim

Hallo Veggie, What a description of the Pensieve: - It looked like light turned liquid - or wind turned solid¨ - And when bending over in it ¨the silvery substance turns transparent, it looked like glass¨. What a daunting task to translate that to screen! I always liked the Pensieve part in the movies. At least the surroundings, atmosphere and interrogation of Karkarov (who looked more like a deranged murderer than Sirius). Of course Bagman omitted. That bit was a fun read, no? His female fan base maybe almost as great as Lockheart. Somehow knowing David Tenant is in it, eccentric as always - including the weird tongue habit - I wasn´t surprised not seeing a hysterically crying, pitiful Crouch Jr. Training again for the final challenge. The remark of Ron becoming so good in Defense Against the Dark Arts... nice link to the secret lessons in Room of Requirement. it makes sense Ron and Hermione already here improving so they can help the other recruits. Yey, mental image Molly´s school days. Former caretaker apparently also into torture. Then the Third task... as a fantasy creature geek I of course relish the amount of beings. It was a movie decision to instead make the walls of the maze alive and dangerous. Could work in the book but maybe overkill? Thankfully Rowling didn´t use the typical ¨What walks on one, two and eventually three legs?¨ riddle. This sphinx is creative enough to make up a new one. Harry a bit showing the arrogance Snape loathes in James after solving the riddle - ¨amazed of his own brilliance¨. Oh boy.

Embran

Agreed. It would indeed be a massive change if the movie had made up the "Moody is actually an impostor" plot completely, however what I'm arguing is that the movie could have kept that plot from the book while making a little change by having another character be the impostor, which is kind of what you would naturally be inclined to think reading the book after the movie since BCJ's character is treated so differently, and confirmed dead at this point in the book. However at this point I think Veggie has been given too many hints that it is indeed BCJ who is pretending to be Moody, which fits pretty well (since it was designed to) with the scene in "The Egg and the Eye" chapter, for Veggie to not think that it is him. But I still think we shouldn't confirm anything too early.

Alias93

I'm late to the party here, but a main difference between the Snape thing and the Crouch ting is that the book is seemingly making it impossible for Barty Crouch jr to be the main villain, due to him having died in Azkaban. Also it's quite specific to THIS book, not several, and Veggie already knows how much a lot of people hate the movies due to all of the changes. So for him it would still be a slight chance that it's completely different in the book for some reason.

H

Hi Veggie! Poor Neville. Having parents who don't recognize their own child must be terrible. I don't blame him for not telling anyone, he really isn't that close to anyone at school. On the other hand, wouldn't what happened to them be quite common knowledge in the wizarding world? They both were well-known Aurors, everyone knew about the attack, it's strange that no one at Hogwarts asked Neville about it. I'd expect at least Malfoy to make fun of him about it all the time. I love that Mrs. Weasley and Bill came to see Harry before the third task. It was so nice of them. Also, I liked how Harry called Mrs. Weasley out for the way she treated Hermione. What do you think would happen if Cedric wasn't so "noble" and took the cup first?

Janie

wow you are right, both my questions are chapter 31 related. have to change that as well. thanks, totally got that wrong

Florian Krause

Hey Veggie contacted me concerning this comment. I actually think it is fine, the rephrasing might be a good idea, but i also think that the line where a leading questions begins and a normal question ends is really subjective. But i think that the content of your Chapter 30 paragraph belongs into Chapter 31, right?

Jonas (Methanoutput)

Thanks Andrew. I thought so, too. Still want to hear if Mordimer would be happier with my suggestion to change the phrasing.

Florian Krause

@Florian, I personally think the question is fine. Just to offer another opinion on this but I don’t see it as too spoiler-y. A few book clubs ago someone asked a question about Ludo, and Veggie worked out that he was betting on Harry. He was very happy about his theory, so I don’t think it’ll ruin his fun if he figures it out. That’s just my opinion though, but it’s fine to me 😀

Andrew K

Would it be better if I change 'wording' into 'translation'. Would that make it ambigious enough?

Florian Krause

yes, letting him know about word play is a spoiler, it wouldn't be his own conclusion. you didn't figure it out when you didn't know that the word play is involved.

Mordimer

Is it really a spoiler if my comment makes him think about it more? It still would be his own conclusion, you really think that would Ruin his fun?

Florian Krause

This is very leading question about Rita, I would say kinda spoilerish. If he figured it out he will mention it in the review, if not, your comment might spoil the reveal for him if he will go back and start thinking about it, as you suggested the word play. I would recommend that you remove your comment about chapter 30, you might ruin his fun.

Mordimer

Others have said most of what needed to be mentioned for Chapter 30 so I'll skip that. Chapter 31 I love how perplexed Harry is when McGonagall calls him to the room where the champions families are waiting. When he sees Mrs. Weasley and Bill there to act as his family it's so heartwarming. Also we see where Bill first meets Fleur. Then when we meet up with Hermione you realize that Mrs. Weasley had honestly thought that Hermione had broken Harry's heart hence the small Easter egg.

Annette Elliott

The french version of the riddle kept "spider" (araignée) as the answer, and adjusted the clues so they matched the syllables. I actually think it turned out a little better in the translation, I feel like the "er" part was a bit weak in the original.

Alias93

"Firstly, nosy Harry can’t leave well enough alone. He literally stuck his nose in it lol." I never thought about it that way, that's amazing haha!

Hairy Pothead

G’day Veggie! Hope you are doing well! Chapter 30 Firstly, nosy Harry can’t leave well enough alone. He literally stuck his nose in it lol. I wonder if Karkaroff has ever heard the term “snitches get stitches.” He was probably really banking on the fact that Voldemort was gone for good when he sold out all the other Death Eaters. It made me laugh when Harry told Dumbledore he fell asleep in Divination and Dumbledore was like “quite understandable” Chapter 31 Ron’s prejudice coming through again against Madame Maxime! Interesting to note, Rita says in her article that she “witnessed” Harry leaving class. Do you think she was in the room somehow? Although she does come out with a lot of B.S. so I wouldn’t take that too seriously… Were you able to figure out the Sphinxes riddle? I didn’t, but I was also like 9 when the book came out so I’ll give myself a pass. I love hearing about how other languages handled the riddle in their translations. Love from Australia

Cj Hayes

Hi Veggie and Woozle! Poor, poor Neville is really one of the most tragic characters in the series. He often has a hard time at school and now we hear about this terrible situation with his parents, that he never opened up about to his peers (which I totally get, since he isn't really that close with any of them). Before this chapter, did you assume Nevilles parents were dead or alive? When Rita mentioned in her article that Harry might have suffered brain damage from Voldemort's curse, that made me wonder: Would it not have been sensible to have baby Harry thoroughly checked by the healers of St. Mungos after he survived a killing curse? Since he was the first person ever to do so, not even Dumbledore could have been 100% sure, what the physical consequences were, apart from the obvious scar. And I can just imagine how eager some healers would be to study The Boy Who Lived (at least I would be if I was a healer).

Tawny Owl

Hi Veggie :) Just a short loop back to the beginning of the book.. I theorized that Dumbledore might have been the one to buy the Riddle Mansion and keep Frank on... You said that you didn't think Dumbledore would care enough about a muggle to do that... After hearing how Dumbledore seems to be the only wizard to care that Frank has disappeared - do you still feel that way? :) I think it sounds exactly like something Dumbledore would do to keep an eye on the place - and Voldemort.

Lisette C.

Hi veggie long time since I’ve been able to comment life been hectic but in a good way. I got a bunch to catch up on! These chapters really add so much more depth to the story and character development.

Karen

Greetings, Chapter – 30 - Silly Dumbledore not securing the magical exposition dump properly :) - how fast can Dumbledore read? A caretaker gone missing could not be more than a passing note, in a local paper. there has to be hundreds of them. - We finally find out what happened to Neville’s parents :( . The movies just say they suffered a fate worse then death. Chapter – 31 - Do you have any idea as to what Hermione thinks she figured out? Because I am a nerd I did the math. Half way (by chapter count) is chapter 6 of The Order of the Phoenix. If we keep the pace we will be done in 4.7 years (June 2029). P.S. happy birthday Veggie :)

Garfnob

These chapters really show what a good egg Harry is. He immediately goes to defend Madame Maxime in front of Fudge and he also clears up the missunderstanding with Hermione to Mrs. Weasley as soon as it comes up. I know some people think Mrs. Weasley's behaviour is out of character but personally I think it is a really nice detail that shows that not even she is perfect and can be fooled even though she should know better (as we again see when she's telling Amos off earlier in the chapter). The Weasleys being considered Harry's family and being invited to watch the third task is just the sweetest thing🥰 Lastly: You know that Hermione is seriously worried about Harry's safety if she's willing to sacrifice studying time to help him prepare for the third task🙈😅

Diego Zenhäusern

Which makes it even more heartbreaking when Harry blames himself for Cedric's death. If he had been selfish and had given in to his fantasies of winning the tournament, Cedric would have lived...

I love sassy Harry standing up to Fudge about Madame Maxine! But what a dark chapter... Barty Crouch Jr is so much younger and more frightened than in the movie. If you hadn't seen the movie, do you think you would have believed he was guilty? What would you have thought of Krum using an unforgivable curse? My name is actually Margarita, by the way, hence the nickname. I had a good laugh during the last Book Club. Much love to you and Woozle!

Hi veggie, Well we have come to the final task. So imagine reading this book and then watching the film version of the third task. WOW what a let down it was, they literally took out everything. There is some really cool encounters in the book all we get in the movie are moving hedges. As a Ravenclaw I really love the sphinx. I don’t really like to compare the book to the movies that much but its very hard when for me when it comes to this one. PS I was wondering if maybe at the end of the series (books) you might do some kind of live roundtable like discussion for patrons.

Howiedoing

I like the debate about who should win the tournament too, because in the film it feels like circumstances are forcing their hand. In the books, it feels like they come to the decision themselves.

S1lm4r1l

Yep. Spent all the CGI budget on the Dragon.

Hi Veggie, Two things about Chapter 31 this time: Did you, just like Hermione figure out how Rita does her information gathering? When I read it first, I didn't but I probably could have even with the german translation which is awkward sometimes. I do like the Sphinx, I was surprised that a word riddle like that was translated and kind of worked in german. The "er" part of the riddle was similar, too. At least the way Harry thought of it.

While not as huge as Snape's loalty, I think Crouch Jr being the main villain (beside Voldy) and the orchestrator of pretty much all things falls into the same category of things the movies just wouldn't make up. It's massive. But I guess Veggie is the one who decides.

Me Here

Hey Veggie! Crouch's son's trial is one of the more intense scenes in this book for me, especially when it was described how Crouch was shouting furiously while his wife was just sobbing wildly beside him and his son was pleading his innocence. It really captured a lot of emotions. It's really sweet and heartwarming how Mrs.Weasley and Bill showed up as Harry's family, it's one of my favorite moments. Lastly, the third task in the movie is the most disappointing part for me because instead of riddles and creatures we just got some crazy grass.

Maddie

Slim- perhaps there's some sort of magical perception filter that translates languages? Or she's had practice from all those cursed Muggles Ron mentioned in PoA.

In the sixth book, Fudge tells the Muggle Prime Minster that they have to import her. Which is weird given that she speaks English very well.

S1lm4r1l

"Remember Fleur Delacour? From the 4th movie? Yeah, she's engaged to random Weasley brother #5 you've never seen before. Confused? May I interest you in one Mundungus Fletcher, huge admirer of Harry Potter?" :-/

Alias93

Can i just say, I love Molly and Bill! It really just goes to show how much the Weasley family treats Harry like he is part of the family, even if Harry doesn't realize his IS family by choice. (Let's be honest, if they could get Harry to live with them full time, they would!) He knows Sirius can't come, but how could he not expect Molly to not show? He was just ready to leave and go spend time elsewhere. Although, still hate Molly's treatment of Hermione until Harry makes it clear he's not dating Hermione! Speaking of Hermione....what did she figure out about Rita? The maze is so much better in the books! As a movie watcher first I always found it underwhelming. Seemed lame to me, but the book is so amazing. Also backtracking a bit, the trial! I love that Crouch already knew his son is on trial then the way it is portrayed in the film. The film makes sense, but the books do it better.

Hey Veggie, hope you’re great! -The information about Neville’s parents is heartbreaking. They were tortured after Voldemort’s downfall, making it more tragic and pointless that they suffered. It shows that Voldemort still held a threat over the magical world despite being in exile. I don’t think it’s said in the movies, but we learn outright that Neville’s parents are alive, but they are confined to an institution. It’s heartbreaking and it adds so much to his character. Speaking of backstories - which movie characters who had no backstories in the film are you hoping to hear more of in the books going forward? -I adore Mrs Weasley & Bill coming to see Harry. They really are his family despite no blood ties, and it’s a nice message to show that family is more than being related to someone. I’m glad Harry had this support before the third task. Also it seems Fleur is quite interested in Bill - I love this tease, but hate how random it is in the movie. She shows up out of nowhere in Deathly Hallows - I feel sorry for movie watchers who have zero context, it must be quite confusing. For me, Amos Diggory has X-Pac heat

Hello Veggie! I hope you are doing great. Chapter 30 What did you think of the introduction of the Pensieve here? I think it's way more magical than in the movies. I think I agree with Dumbledore about Dementors and the Ministry. Dementors are inherently evil and inherently aligned with Voldemort, so giving them charge of dangerous prisoners is insane. What do you think of the extreme difference between Crouch Jr. in the book and the movie? I don't think Mr Crouch should be trying and sentencing his relative, that's crazy. But I do agree with the sentence for what they did. I'm curious about how one leaves the Pensieve. Do they just will themselves to leave? Because I presume otherwise all the memories present in it would play. Chapter 31 What do you think Hermione realised about Rita? It seems Madam Maxime was crying. I wonder if it's because of the conflict with Hagrid. I read it as Hagrid glancing at her because he knows she's upset since the Minister mistreated her. I can finally say it: the movie maze SUCKED! I'm so fascinated by the sphinx and how she came to be in the maze. It seems like she must have agreed to it. Like the Merpeople? We have Cedric mentioning someone helped him with the egg, who do you think it was? Cedric is acting so Hufflepuff here! It's a great exchange between the boys.

I think Snape's loyalty is a bit different: it would be such a huge thing for the movies to have made up entirely, it's pretty obvious it came from the books. Whereas for Crouch Jr, the book treats him very differently from the movie, by introducing him much later, he is not even a character for most of the book. Also, as shown with the Dobby/Neville situation (and Crouch/Bagman being kind of fused into one character for the movie), it's possible to imagine that the movie could have used a different character for this role. Also, even if Veggie knows about Snape being on the good side, there are still major plot points about it that the movies left out, for example the fact that he was the one who relayed the prophecy to Voldemort, or what really happened in that memory Harry saw in OotP. So even if it's not really a spoiler to talk about his loyalty, we should still be careful when mentioning it, and not reveal some of these details. For example, I remember a comment a while back that mentioned Snape feeling guilty about Lily's death, but nothing in the movies indicate that he was partly responsible for it. Of course this is only my take on the subject, I'm sure others will have different ideas on what the line is between spoiler and known information.

Alias93

The third task is so much more interesting in the book, all the obstacles and interesting tests along the way.

*Might Edit* I like how Mr Crouch and Moody's appearance is used to show the passage of time, Moody loses bits of himself, whilst Crouch becomes more fierce and gaunt. Wizarding Justice is not about evidence, but influence. Karkaroff panics on finding out that Snape is going to walk free. Judging by the company in which Snape's name is mentioned, Snape is guilty of unspecified, possibly violent crimes. Bagman didn't know he was aiding Voldemort and Crouch still wanted him thrown in Azkaban. If Dumbledore hadn't vouched for Snape, would he walk free, even if his betrayal of Voldemort was more widely known? I doubt it. "A woman with thick shining dark hair with heavily hooded eyes sat in the chained chair as though it were a throne" is such marvellous characterisation. Any guesses who she is? This chapter is where I start disliking Dumbledore, Harry says that Voldemort's plan is to feed Harry to Nagini and Dumbledore's response is basically the Jeremy Clarkson meme "Oh no.....Anyway..." On the other hand, Dumbledore telling Harry that falling asleep in Divination is "quite understandable" is hilarious. Harry never asking Neville why he was brought up by his grandmother is such a teenage boy thing to not do. Sphinxes are extremely interesting, in Greek mythology they're female, treacherous and pose riddles, in Egypt they are male, guard Pharaonic tombs and lack wings. Kinda cool when you consider what this Sphinx was guarding, a portkey to a graveyard. Sphinx and Sphincter have the same root from the Greek word for "Squeeze". The more you know. Was Barty Crouch Jnr innocent? Why did the Death Eaters think the Longbottoms knew where Voldemort was? Is Dumbledore the wealthy man who owns the Riddle House and kept Frank on to mind the gardens? How is Rita doing it? Which aspect of the Third Task did you like the best? (Besides Cedric of course.) Please do consider doing chapters 32, 33 and 34 together. :D

S1lm4r1l

I guess that's fair. Has Veggie said anything about Snape's true loyalty, Deathly Hallows, Horcruxes etc. They are also massive things like the Crouch thing but they seem to be talked about quite freely? Why? Where is the line drawn?

Me Here

Regarding the spoiler: I don't think we should outright confirm that Crouch Jr is indeed behind the whole plot of the book. Veggie already suspects that it's the case as the book reveals more and more things about him, but from what he said in previous book clubs he would prefer not to have confirmation until the book reveals it, which hasn't happened yet. Also, Veggie only knows the movie version of the twist, which is different from the book as we can see from the trial. We don't know yet that Crouch Jr is guilty and manipulative at this point, he could have been innocent and radicalized later after getting out of Azkaban.

Alias93

I can't stress enough how much better chapter 30 is in the book: 1. Extended trial scene! We get context for Crouch and Bagman's relationship, and what Winky and Rita were saying about Ludo. Crouch doesn't like death eaters and dislikes Bagman for the way he was favored in the trial. 2. Longer and much more meaningful conversation between Dumbledore and Harry! It goes from Neville's sad backstory to Harry's scar, to Snape being a death eater etc. All we get in the movie is Dumbledore telling Harry not to linger over his dreams... 3. Neville's parents are alive! Do you think we'll ever meet them? 4. We get info about Sirius and Dumbledore's relationship. And Dumbledore talking about Bertha (even see her talking!). I also love that Dumbledore cares what happened to Frank Bryce from the first chapter. But my main point is about Crouch and his son. In the movie, the son attempts to escape as Karkaroff spits out his name. Why would he want to be present in a trial where Karkaroff is about to expose him? The book makes a lot more sense, he's there to be sentenced. It's also crazy how differently the son acts. In the book we are meant to feel he might be innocent instead of this crazy maniac that we see in the movie. I prefer the book version more for reasons I will address in later chapters.

Hey Veggie! Chapter 30: - Theres no liquorice snaps here! Honestly, I kinda prefer them being in the movie since they’re absolutely the sort of thing Dumbledore would get. It also means Harry isn’t just being nosey by looking through the cabinet in a place which is also Dumbledores living quarters. Everything in the pensieve is insanely good! - I hate how we find out about Neville’s parents in the movie. It’s a throw away line amidst a scene which is very chaotic and very easy to miss. I appreciate Dumbledore and Harry for respecting Neville’s privacy. I love Neville. Chapter 31: - I would pay good money to see an alternate reality where the Dursleys turn up at Hogwarts to watch the third task. I am curious if they were even asked though, presumably a muggleborns parents would be invited? - I’ve always found Amos Diggory to be more annoying than Lockhart, I get that he idolises his son but does he really need to put Harry down? Overall really great chapters, what do you think of Bagman now? What do you think Hermione’s revelation was? What about the maze? Skrewts, boggarts, golden mist, spiders, and a Sphinx! This would have been amazing if it was accurate in the movie... Which DID have an interactive game with most of these creatures in the special features for the DVD! Ugh runtimes :/ I hope you have/had a great birthday!

I've only played the 2nd one, and watched a playthrough of the 1st. My favourite book exclusive detail is in DH part 1 when they go to the Lovegoods house, they actually go to Luna's bedroom like in the book and it has the portraits of Harry, Ron, Hermione, Ginny and Neville on the ceiling, with the word "friends" in gold linking them. It's easy to miss since you have to look up and at a bit of an angle, but I was glad they included it when I noticed.

Alias93

I have, when it first came out! I've forgotten most of it though. Just started playing through it again though with said friend, in the rereleased Collection. Not a fan of Lupin being able to transform at will though, he couldn't in 1-4! XD I think my favourite touch is Hermione's boggart being McGonagall holding up a picture of a troll- as in, the failing OWL grade. It's pretty clear to me the Devs were fans of the books, even though most of the likeness were to the movies (and Frank Bryce randomly being a generic milkman!?)

Jake M

The scene where Barty Crouch Junior gets sentenced to Azkaban is so much more upsetting in the book than the movie. I think it’s a great scene in the book to confuse the reader into feeling bad for the boy. I feel just horrible for Barty Crouch’s wife, having to witness that. Hearing more about Neville’s parents is both amazing and devastating. I love Neville and get exited any time they expand his backstory, but finding out his parents don’t recognise him and were unable to raise him is so sad. Do you think we will hear any more about Neville’s backstory, Veggie?

Marianne

Have you played the second Lego Harry Potter game (years 5-7)? I remember it containing a lot of little book exclusive details, most of which were hidden/locked until you replay the levels and unlock more areas. It even has Rita Skeeter as an unlockable character (not sure if she's in the first one), which includes a certain ability very relevant to this book...

Alias93

The fate of Neville's parents was briefly mentionned in the movie, but here we get so much more horrifying details on what happened to them. Maybe Harry never asked Neville about them because he didn't want to talk much about what happened to his own parents? Barty Crouch's son might have been innocent? It's interesting how little we know about him at this point, and how we're made to feel kind of sorry for him. When Bill and Charlie showed up at the beginning of the book you joked that they could be ''chick magnets'', and turns out you were right: as soon as Fleur sees Bill she starts taking an interest in him. The third task was my favourite of the three in the book, but I hate how they did it in the movie. No boggarts, blast-ended skrewts, weird fog, sphinx or giant spiders in the movie, just ''scary'' wind and moving hedges... I also like that it was Cedric who had the choice of winning the tournament himself or giving it to Harry because he helped him, and that they had time to talk about it for a while before deciding to take the cup together. In the book, Harry is tempted to accept Cedric's offer after they're both out of danger, but in the movie they decided to have him consider letting Cedric be taken by the hedges so he could win... which was so out of character in my opinion. Is it just me who thinks the answer to the sphinx's riddle should obviously be a dementor? In a world where dementors exist, surely that's the ONE creature you would want to avoid kissing at all cost. When I read the book for the first time as a kid I was pretty confused by this. PS: Happy birthday!

Alias93

S'mae Veggie! Hope you had a wonderful birthday 😊 Chapter 30 Harry once again proving Dobby wrong- he's the nosiest person on the planet! Most of the series' plot has been driven by Harry's inability to keep his abnormally large nose out of other people's business. Can you imagine how much shorter the books would be if he just stayed in Gryffindor Tower and did his homework? Chapter 31 Writing a smear story about somebody's wellbeing? Rita can do one. She's far more malicious and threatening than the movie made her out to be! And yet again Hermione runs off to the library without revealing her brainwave... Hasn't she learned? Last time she did that, she got petrified! As you keep saying in Buffy- communicate, guys!!! What do you think her idea is this time? The third task is so much better in the book- it actually feels like a challenge, whereas in the movie the only threat was some overgrown weeds at the very end. It's also refreshing that, unlike with the potion riddle in Philosopher's Stone, we can play along with the Sphinx's. I was playing LEGO Harry Potter with a friend recently, and I was pleasantly surprised that the maze level featured the sphinx, blocking the path. You build a spider to scare it away, which I thought was a great reference to the riddle's answer. The fact that the LEGO games show more love to the books than the movies did is a damning indictment... If only the devs had been in charge of the screenplays!
