####### EPISODE SPOILER REVIEW BELOW! APPARENTLY SOME OF YOU ARE WATCHING FOR THE FIRST TIME ALONG SIDE ME, SO PLEASE DON'T READ BEYOND THIS POINT UNTIL YOU HAVE SEEN THE EPISODE YOURSELF! ######

------

WHAT a bizarre way to start the session (I address why I call them 'series' in the video XD), but a great episode!  Definitely had a creep factor that no other episode has had yet!  Definitely didn't see 'Lily' being a returning character, but I really like her story here.  It reminded me of a certain movie, which we discuss after the episode (I give you time to mute or fast forward if you want to avoid spoilers for that certain movie XD).

Glad to finally be posted actually ON Buffy Fridays!  Lets see if I can keep that up! :D

Love you, guys! Hope you have a great weekend!

As always, if you click the video just after this post, you may need to  download it first.  This should be fixed in a couple of hours!

Buffy Fridays (on.. Friday)! Season 3 Episode 1 First Time Reaction!

Comments

One thing that no reactor picks up (at least the ones I saw). Buffy frees the workers from their unjust bosses by fighting with a hammer and a sickle. It has to be intentional from the writers or the director. In any case it always amused me.

This was great. I think those were demons :) I'm glad you noticed that the one-take scene was shot well. I love this episode. Buffy really really comes back into her role with a bang as she takes on those demons. She goes home when she realizes she has a family, unlike "Lily". I always appreciate this episode, and I really love this season too! Can't wait to watch more! :D THANK YOU.

Grace

The Demon "factory" isn't building or manufacturing anything. They're harvesting Despair.

Others have said this but the episode was about Buffy reclaiming her identity as The Slayer and coming to terms with what happened last season. She feels tremendous guilt for "killing" Angel so she ran away from everything including who she was. Ken is a demon and that was a demon dimension where time passes much more quickly. As for the gang using crossbows, it's not a good idea. Crossbows are a deadly weapon to whoever gets in the way as Jenny demonstrated when she shot Giles. Without lots of training the kids would be more of a danger to each other than to the vampires

Yeah, the next episode was definitely a line in the sand for me back when it first aired. I'm trying very hard to not be too specific so as to avoid accidentally spoiling it for anyone... but there are attitudes there that I never forgot. I wasn't lying when I said Buffy is my favourite character. I like or love all the other characters, but the general lack of curiosity as to what Buffy was going through that made her run away... not cool.

Love it!!! I completely agree. I feel horrible for Buffy, I understand how that grief and responsibility would’ve felt overwhelming. Especially with the expulsion and her mums reaction, everything would start to seem like a everyone was against her and she had to run. Even sadder for me going into the next episode, after something like that, you really need to be accepted back with love and be understood. I think the summer, while hard for everyone, especially Joyce, I do think Buffy suffered the most, alone, scared, homeless, thinking she let everyone down/they were against her, grieving a loss and losing her identity too. I can’t imagine what she was going through at that age!!

Hiya Veg! Sorry for coming in so late. I have been away. As others have said, those were demons. That was a dimension of hell. And, while Ken and his minions were very much a side quest, this was an emotional continuation of the finale. At the end of season 2, Angelus kidnapped and tortured Giles. Xander told Buffy that Willow meant for her to "kick Angel's behind." Because Angel was restored and Buffy then had to kill him, she had no one to turn to for the grief she felt. Giles wouldn't understand after she'd let him down by allowing him to be kidnapped. Willow and Xander were in the "kick his butt" gang. Her mother had kicked her out. Buffy ran and felt alone. But, in going to this hell dimension, she finally came to terms with the fact that she couldn't run away from who she is. She's Buffy, the Vampire Slayer. And her place is at home, with her family and her friends. Anyway, that's the way I see it.

(very mild Spoiler alert, Veggie do not read) Yeah, I didn't watch Buffy as it aired, despite being in high school, because the promos made it look like nothing but teen romance drama. But let's be honest, all Buffy's relationships are toxic. The S5 ep that I don't like is ep 6 (the one about "Numero Cinco.") I don't hate it or anything, it's just a dud and it's.... boring, weirdly. I agree, I think Veggie will enjoy Angel S1 -- it'll just be us who are impatient for him to get to the good stuff :-D

Yes the pronoun episode lol... That's the one I usually skip. Cringey and such a disturbing plot. But there's that one scene you know, that's worth watching. What episode from season 5 did you not like? I can't remember any of that season being so bad. I bet Veggie will like all the episodes, so far he seems to have enjoyed all the Buffy episodes I consider bad, I mean Bad Eggs? I wish I could be that positive!

Maggie

Spoiler alert

Maggie

Yes and as a teenaged girl you'd think I was the target audience, but I just always thought that relationship was toxic.

Maggie

They were Demons. Demons come in all shapes and sizes. :)

Michael Short

you should start Angel at the end of Season 3 :) This is the watch order for the two shows. https://josswhedon.blogspot.com/2012/04/buffy-and-angel-episode-viewing-order.html

Wow, I could have written your comment! Buffy and Angel's romantic relationship is one of the least interesting things in the show to me, so I had no incentive to check out Angel -- and WOW did I miss out. It has my favorite character arcs, and sometimes I prefer it to Buffy. It's like the Torchwood to Buffy's Doctor Who. Very curious what you think the one bad episode of Angel is... there are a few contenders in S1 and one big outlier in S5, lol. Personally, there is an episode of Angel that is just a pronoun, and I think it's an honestly terrible episode that is sooooo skippable. (Altho I'm interested to see what Veggie thinks.)

Haven't finished the episode, but i was really hoping for more movie review than good other than the last 15 minutes. Perhaps my youtube review suggestion will make it out there. You just mentioned "you liked the movie more than the series, wait 10 seconds" Brahhhh, that would'a been fantastic and hilarious after the truth came out. Thanks again for checking the movie, on to like 100 more episodes :) hopefully i'm alive in 2 years when the series is finished <3

I, for one, could never forget to tell you when to start Angel. I'm so glad you'll be watching that too, even though it'll slow you down on Buffy. I watched all of Buffy without knowing Angel was a thing, and when I found out, I wasn't interested because I didn't enjoy Angel as a character and I didn't like his relationship with Buffy (I did enjoy Angelus as a villain though). I was spoiled on something about the show that made me want to watch it more, I gave it a shot and - I preferred it to Buffy. My favourite Buffyverse characters are on that show. And I love Angel now of course. When I rewatch Buffy, there's some episodes I skip; not when I rewatch Angel. There's only one episode I would consider bad and even then, it's funny enough that it's worth watching.

Maggie

Hello! As for Angel, do not start that series until *after* Season 3 of Buffy wraps up. I can say nothing spoiler-y, but it will be pretty obvious -- bloomin' obvious, as you might say :) -- at the end of the last episode of Season 3 that it's time to begin the new series. The watch order will start off with Buffy/Season 4/Episode 1 and then Angel/Season 1/Episode 1. From there, plenty of fans will be able to direct you to the proper watch order.
