Buffy Fridays (on a Sunday)! Season 2 Episode 22 First Time Reaction!

Comments

This was spectacular! I teared up so much. THANK YOU. I think Xander had mixed intentions when choosing not to tell Buffy about the spell. He wanted to ensure the world would be saved, but maybe it was out of his own greed as well. Either way, he knew it wouldn't go well for Angel, but I forgive him. Buffy had to do the right thing, but it wasn't easy. Beautiful episode. Powerful. Thank you for watching!

Just to note, the mutant enemy logo at the end did indeed say soemthing different to his "ggrrr arrrg" and I believe there are only 6 episodes where he does something different at the end 😀

And there we have the lie, it can be argued if Xander telling her the truth would have changed anything. I think it would have, she would have focused much more on trying to keep Angelus from the sword. The problem is that I feel Xander didn't say what he said because it was potentially the right thing. He said it because of his irrational jealousy, and that more than anything makes it repugnant and immoral regardless of whether it was right.

I always have to finish series that I start, too. There's one that I haven't finished because I know how it ends. The ending is one I don't want to watch, so I'm very slowly finishing the final episodes. It's the reason why I give shows fifteen minutes. If I watch more than that, I'm 99% going to finish the entire show.

Wow, what an episode! I really enjoyed this one!! On the Joyce thing: I get how it can be frustrating to people but I think it is 100% accurate to what would happen in real life. I mean no mother would wan't her daughter to risk her life like that. So it's natural her first instinct would be to try and forbid her from doing it. I don't think you can expect Joyce to calm down and rationally think about the stakes...especially not immediately after she found out about all of it and is in such an emotionally hightened state. That said I certainly do hope (and expect) that she'll come around once she has had some time to get some distance and to think about the situation a little more rationally. On the Xander thing: Personally I actually think telling Buffy to kill Angel was the right thing; as telling her the truth and therefore breaking her resolve probably would have ended in her death (seeing how close and intense the fight was a bit of hesitance very well could have been her undoing). That said, it is again one of those moments where Xander does the arguably right thing for all the wrong reasons since it is painfully obvious that once more he doesn't say this to help Buffy or save the world but primarily out of jealousy and spite. So weirdly enough his decision here actually makes me disslike him more even though I agree with it from a rational standpoint🙈😅

My biggest issue with the Xander thing is that he brought Willow into it with the lie. For example, if he would've just said "And Buffy...kick his ass", instead of "Willow says...kick his ass". It would still be a shitty thing to do, seeing as Willow asked him to tell Buffy to stall, but at least that way he wouldn't be putting words in Willow's mouth.

Nicole Iannone

Here's my two cents on the discussion around Xander's reasoning in these episodes. I agree with most talk about his dislike/envy of Angel and maybe tactical reasons, but Xander also may have not wanted Willow to complete the ritual because of the harm it might have caused Willow. He almost just lost her and I'm sure that was a factor in him not telling Buffy to stall for time, hoping she would kill Angelus before and then Willow could be safe.

Luci Love

I agree that it was, ultimately, probably better for Buffy's safety but it was a shitty thing to do as a friend to undermine her agency in the matter.

Samantha Di Lorenzo

Completely agree Samantha!! I don’t really think it was from the goodness of his heart. I think Xander could overlook the murder of thousands if HE liked the person. I think he owed that info to his friend.

Giorgia M

I get your point, but also this is a demon who has murdered and tortured hundreds of people and having him killed would be revenge for all his victims, so I don't blame Xander for not saying anything XD

Jake M

Regarding if things would have been different if Xander had told Buffy what Willow had actually sent to relay - it's possible. Willow had said to tell Buffy to try and stall for time. If she'd gone in there knowing that Willow was attempting the spell again, she would've probably tried harder to stop Angelus from grabbing the sword from Acathla to begin with. Unfortunately, I don't think this was something done out of the goodness of Xander's heart. I wish it was but his previous arguments towards wanting Angel to die and thinking that saving him would be making light of Calendar's death would say that that was his primary motivation in this. I don't hate Xander but he's not without his sometimes massive self-serving flaws.

Samantha Di Lorenzo

I want to comment but I’ve not been able to come up with anything to say. Must be having an off day lol. I love this episode, it’s a great finale. I love the setting of the last fight, I love Spike and Joyce having awkward small talk and I love the bittersweet nature of this show. You want Angel’s soul restored? Okay we will, but then Buffy will have to kill him. I think Whedon or one of the other writers said they would often give you what you wanted but not in the way you would want it. I think this is teetering on 10/10 territory but I don’t know, it feels so classic Buffy to me now it’s kind of un-rateable. I think the fraternity lizard one is my least favourite too, although I never particularly loved the fish or egg ones either (they definitely aren’t vegan). I love Halloween, the dark age, surprise and passion are probably my favs bar the finale. Oh, I do get annoyed at Joyce here. I know she’s processing but she seems to be acting oblivious. Buffy already has enough responsibility without having to act like the adult, so I forgive her for childish or rash behaviour. Joyce, I don’t know. We’ll just have to see!!! Can’t wait for next episode!! Ive only seen bits of the movie because ive never wanted it to affect the Buffy the series for me. But I’ll watch it with you next week, hopefully it’s good!! I heard it was less seriously done when Joss wrote it and then realised how much potential the story idea had and fleshed it out for TV.

*Intense, emotional scene happening* Veggie: OH MY GOD THE LAMPS! 10/10 content 🤣
