Heartbroken.. But I should have seen it coming.

This was an excellently done episode, guys.  And sadly we say goodbye to one of my absolute favs.  Definitely see this as a game changer when it comes to several (if not all) of the group.

Seriously, this one hit me pretty damn hard.  But I can't pretend like it wasn't a brilliant episode all the same.  I bet you have been waiting on my reaction to this one XD

When the moment happens I am not 100% sure if it is true or not, so takes me a little moment for it to sink in.  By the end I, well... yeah.

There will be someone sorely missed as we go forward with the show.

Love you, guys!  Have a great weekend.

As always, if you watch soon after this post is made, you may need to download the video to watch.  This should be fixed in a couple of hours or so.

Buffy Fridays! Season 2 Episode 17 First Time Reaction!

Comments

Xander had a deep hate for vampires long before he found out Angel was one people forget his best(male) friend Jesse was killed by vampires in episode two of season one can you blame him for not trusting Angel the whole crush on Buffy is a bit much but so is the crush that Willow has on Xander

chris allen

I noticed that you missed the "wrestling" reference, understandably, when Dru tries to help Angel against Giles, and Spike holds her back: "No entering the match unless he tags you, pet".

Thom Purdy

THANK YOU. A beautiful reaction. Jenny will be missed always. A brilliant episode and reaction!

Grace

There is another reason that Xander dislikes and distrusts Angel that everyone seems to forget. Back in Season 1 episode 12 when Buffy goes to fight the Master, Xander who is determined to help her goes to Angel and finds him in his room, fully aware that if Buffy faces the Master she will die but not doing a damn thing to help her. Xander has to force Angel to take him to the Master's lair where they arrive just in time for Xander to save Buffy yet Angel is supposed to have this great love for her. I would never trust him either after that.

Stephen Knueppel

Understandable considering the emotions you were feeling, but I'm disappointed (considering your love of wrestling) you didn't react to Spike's comment when Giles was beating on Angelus.

Tim Pierce

Yeah, I agree I really didn't like that moment either. Let's be real the only real reason why Xander didn't like Angel is because in his head he stood between him and Buffy. So: 1. That is a false assumption anyways, since Buffy already clearly told Xander that she wasn't interested back in season 1 (which was a great moment of emotional maturity on her part that I really enjoyed). 2. That wouldn't be a reason to be proud of even if it was true. It's just another one of the many moments where Xander can't take Buffy having said "No" as an actual "No" and - at least to me - it gets more anoying every time it happens.๐Ÿ˜•

The thing is, I don't dislike Xander. Veggie's right, Xander can be a really great friend to have in your corner. And the fact that he really doesn't have any skills to contribute and is still willing to throw down there's a fight... that's worth something, too. He just makes it hard to like him a lot of the times. Mostly when it comes to his relationships. I'll be interested in following Veggie's thoughts (and yours and that of anyone else here) as the show continues with the evolution of Xander's character. Because he can really come in clutch sometimes. And yet...

Frederique Gillespie

The walk up the stairs when you know what is coming is brutal. The first time you get shckvalue, but every time fater that, you just get this giant pit in in your stomach and you want to scream at Giles to turn around to just leave, don't go in there, you don't have to see this... It really is gutwrenching

Saiyasha

The more times I watch this series, the more I dislike Xander. You are spot on. His immaturity is profound.

RavenLord

I've been trying to remember how I reacted to Jenny's death when I first watched the show and I can't. It would have been shocking, though. You just didn't kill off main characters on the shows I had watched until then... I haven't been looking forward to your reaction to her demise, though. I mean, I enjoy all your reactions, but I knew this would hurt (as it should) and I'm not a sadist, so I can't say I wanted to see that. But I did feel your pain. Jenny's loss was huge and not "just" in terms of how she made Giles happy. She brought her own colour to the show and she was missed to the very end. Angelus is a coward. He likes his psychological games and torture and all that. But he doesn't want to get into a fight doesn't know he can win. That's why he takes time to draw people. He could kill them easily. So he loves living in that moment where victory is assured. He goes after Jenny, who's only human, when she is alone and utterly helpless. Behold the pointlessness of his evil. Unfortunately, this is another episode where I take issue with Xander and his lack of emotional maturity. Specifically, that scene at Giles's. He's absolutely right that Angelus must be killed and that you can't blame Giles for going after Angelus. But "I hated Angel long before you guys jumped on the bandwagon" is a really mean and petty thing to say in that time and place. There was no reason to hate Angel before he turned evil, so you stand on no moral high ground for having felt that way first. Also, Willow and Buffy are emotional shell-shocked by Jenny's murder. If this is meant to be an expression of Xander's grief, I would still respect the guy more if he wasn't being so callous about the feelings of his friends. And "it's about time somebody tried to kill Angel"? Grow up, Xander. Haven't seen you try. (Nor should he, obviously. But honestly, he keeps saying things like that and it rankles.)

Frederique Gillespie

Yeah, I'm definitely not on Xander's side. It makes me uncomfortable that we're clearly meant to interpret that episode as a light-hearted, jokey story sandwiched between some very heavy ones. The ethics are anything but a joke.

Jake M

Wow, this episode really hit me unprepared. I'm with you Veggie, Jenny and Rupert were the couple I was most invested in๐Ÿ˜ฅ. And this episode really drove home again how f*cked up and sadistic Angelus really is! The way he chose to present Jenny's dead body to Giles is just so sadistic and cruel that it is actually impressive in a really twisted way. I was dreading the end of that scene from the moment I saw the rose at the door and it just got worse with ever single detail we were shown!๐Ÿ˜ฌ๐Ÿ˜ญ And the way he enjoys seing Buffy and Willow break down when they hear the news gave me chills. "You can't leave me. I can't do this alone!" that really just kicked me again, when I was already lying on the floor๐Ÿ˜ญ On a more technical note: I really respect the show for having the guts to do this. Because I totally expected there to be someone/ something that would save Jenny. But the show was just like: No. She's alone in the school at night, so no one would be looking for her/ be there to help. And she is no trained fighter and doesn't have weapons at hand. So realistically she shouldn't stand a chance against Angelus.

Diego Zenhรคusern

I 100% thought the same thing when I watched the episode (because it's just so glaringly obvious that this can't be Buffy's true feelings). However, on rewatching the scenes I honestly believe were meant to think that Xander is just that much of an idiot that he doesn't realize that Buffy is under the spell until he realizes that Amy is under it as well. That said: I'll definitely side with Veggie (and you I'd presume from the tone of your comment?) on the fact that Xander's actions were disgusting. And I'm honestly shocked at how much all the comments in the last episode were defending him. He did plan to DRUG a person so they would get together with him AGAINST their will. And he never really apologized to anyone besides Buffy for that. So him changing his mind when he realized that he'd druged everyone else besides the person he intended to doesn't make him a great guy to me. And I especially didn't like how him not taking advantage of Buffy was made out to be this noble thing when it is just the bare minimum of human DECENCY.

Diego Zenhรคusern

I'm with your original interpretation of last episode- I think Xander believed the spell had worked on Buffy instead and didn't want to try again, until he realised Amy was affected too. It's only once he realises *everyone* is under the influence that he restrains himself. He was all ready to kiss Buffy before she interrupted.

Jake M

I was in the same boat as you when I first watched this series- her and Giles had seemed so great together. And it really rubs in how much Buffy's moment of weakness in not killing Angel had direct consequences to the group, more so than Theresa did a few weeks ago.

Jake M

You are 100% right Veggie. Every single time you mentioned how much you liked Jenny I thought about this episode and how gut-wrenching it would be for you. As you've seen this season has so many high quality episode that some of the non main story ones get pushed aside even if they're good by most standards. Glad you're loving the show so far and aren't too discouraged from watching it now that Jenny's gone. Plenty more amazing episodes to come ๐Ÿ˜€
