[CLOSED] - The Harry Potter Book Club! - Your Notes for Chapters 14 & 15 of the Prisoner of Azkaban!

THIS PART OF THE BOOK CLUB IS NOW COMPLETE! THANK YOU ALL FOR TAKING PART AND SEE YOU NEXT TIME!!

HI GUYS!  WE ARE GOING TO TRY A 2 CHAPTER EPISODE OUT! DON'T WORRY, THIS DEFINITELY DOESN'T MEAN WE WILL NOT BE RETURNING TO 3, JUST WANTED TO SEE HOW IT WORKS OUT.  LIKE MENTIONED IN THE PREVIOUS EPISODE, THIS WILL MEAN MORE REGULAR EPISODES, SO WILL NOT SLOW OUR PROGRESS THROUGH THE BOOKS DOWN! :)

Here is a chance to get your comment read out in the next Book review video!

If you are reading along with the reviews, we are covering chapters "Snape's Grudge" and "The Quidditch Final"! So if you have any thoughts, opinions, comparisons or questions regarding these, please leave a comment below!

I do have to ask, try to keep them fairly short, like 4 or 5 sentences.  That way I can cover more when making the video.  Also try to keep them on subject and not referencing anything that we are yet to cover. Ideally, keep it to 1 comment each if you can (if you have more to say after commenting, you can edit it and add to it! :) ).  These are just rough guidelines rather than rules, I want to be able to fit in as many of you as possible! :)

NEW FEATURE!! - As some of you may want to make a comment, but not have it replied to by others, you can now Message me your thoughts on the chapters by DM'ing me on here.  If you do, please follow all the above rules, especially avoiding mentioning things in future chapters or books!  Oh and please start your DM message with "Book Club -"!

To anyone that does reply to comments below, please make sure you are being friendly and respectful!  A lot of tone and meaning can be lost in text, after all!  If you disagree with someone on something, keep it polite and remember the golden rule in life - Sometimes you have to just agree to disagree! :)

Thanks, guys!! :)

Hey Veggie, good to be here. I really love how Hagrid stood up for Hermione here, since she was right and a really good friend. Keep up the good work!

I like that in the books we already see a bit of the fact that Harry's dad wasn't as perfect as he thought. This is Harry's first hint at the fact that James, like any other person, had feet of clay. I also like the fact that Hagrid called Ron and Harry out about their treatment of Hermione over the Firebolt and Scabbers. Also, as much as I love the punch she gave Draco, I really like that Hermione was so stressed out by everything that she totally lost it and slapped Draco in front of everyone.

Hey Veggie, I thought Snape’s interrogation was a rollercoaster of emotions and intentions. I think originally Snape was in his own way trying to get through the seriousness of keeping safe, but he suddenly switched when Harry’s attitude was reminding him of James and then he was angry when Harry thought James had saved Snape’s life.. however from Snape’s perspective, James had been bullying and tormenting him and only stopped when he didn’t want to be caught. I find it interesting that this is the first reference to James being a bully and a flawed character instead of the perfect great man that Harry thought he was.

What do you mean trelawney has no knowledge of her skill? Are you saying that she is not skilful, or that she is skilful but doesn’t know it, or that she is skilful but doesn’t know how to pass on the skill to students?

Garry (Not Jerry)

Hi Veggie, the thing Hagrid, Snape snd Trelawney have in common is that all three are very knowledgeable and skilled in their fields but all three are horrible teachers. Hagrid is horrible because his assessment of danger is practically not present, Snape is biased, sometimes cruel and has no patience or will to actually convey his knowledge to the students who are not on Hermiones level of comprehension and Trelawney simply does not really has no knowledge of her skill. Pedagogically they are all subpar.

Hi Veggie, long time Youtube watcher, first time on the Patreon! Excited to be part of the book club. I wanted to touch briefly on a topic from a previous chapter (regarding Sir Cadogan and the Fat Lady) as I missed that deadline. From what we know about the paintings from Pottermore and extra JK knowledge is that they are not sentient but behave as though they are. They act as a representation of the person based on what the painter knew about the person, and can learn new stuff from around them. I think they are very comparable to AI nowadays. It is almost like they are programmed to act like a person but cannot know more than what their programmer knows, or what they learn later. Sorry to be off topic, I thought of this comparison and really wanted to share it. Love you videos!

Hi Veggie, if you’ve made it this far, we’ll done! Hopefully your hot chocolate (if you have one) won’t have gone cold! 1. When Snape makes Harry read the marauders map in the movie, I don’t think it’s clear that the map itself is making fun of Snape, not Harry! This always bothered me! 2. I’m really mad at Harry and Ron for forgetting to help Hagrid with the hearing! Hermione did everything herself while doing all her classes and the boys ignoring her because of a broomstick! 3. In defence of Mcgonagall, Neville had proved himself to be untrustworthy with the password, and by not allowing him to be told it, she was actually keeping the rest of Gryffindor House safer!

Garry (Not Jerry)

I don't have much to say, but did you notice at the end of the chapter 'Quidditch Final' that Professor McGonagall sobbed harder than Oliver Wood? Could you imagine McGonagall crying over something like this in the movies? As always, I hope you are doing well, Veggie. I'm also interested in knowing if you enjoyed doing two chapters because those five-hour videos are great, but I bet they are hard to record.

Jonas (Methanoutput)

Hello! I've been listening to your Harry Potter reviews for quite a while, but I've just joined the Patreon, and I'm excited to be commenting for the first time. I haven't read Prisoner of Azkaban in many years, so I'm struck by how differently I view the events in Snape's Grudge. When I was a kid reading the books, I was more on Harry/Ron's side when it came to telling the teachers about the secret passages and Harry going to Hogsmeade. Now, reading it as an adult, Lupin and Snape's comments about what Harry is risking by going to Hogsmeade really resonate with me, and I agree that it's very irresponsible and a little selfish for Harry to be risking his life for candy and fun. I'm really disappointed in Harry and Ron in these chapters. I suppose that shows the difference between a child and an adult's thought process and shows how accurately Rowling is able to capture how kids think. It also shows how mature Hermione is in this regard; she's really the hero of this section of the book. Also, I find the security trolls to be interesting! In the first book, the troll that attacks Hermione in the bathroom is portrayed almost like an animal without any intelligence. But the security trolls must be able to communicate with Hogwarts staff and follow instructions, so, now that I think about it, it seems strange that no one was able to talk to/reason with the troll in the first book. Maybe I'm misremembering, but I wonder if anyone tried to communicate with it? But, in any case, I love the image of security trolls guarding the Fat Lady. Plus, I love the image of Harry's disembodied dead appearing when he threw the mud at Draco in Hogsmeade. That should have been in the movie in my opinion.

Any chapter where we get to indulge in Lee Jordans world class commentary is a good chapter in my eyes! I love how into it Jim Dale gets when Wood saves the penalty. Sounds like he had fun in the recording booth that day, LOL

Nanu Nanu Another set of chapters with more character growth than most of the movies put together, the directors may say they liked Hermione the best but I'm not sure what books they we're reading as the characters bare no resemblance. So when you're listening are you tweaking characters so they look more their ages rather than the movie ages and have adjusted the height of hagrid as he's taller in the books?
