Buffy Fridays! Season 2 Episode 8 First Time Reaction!

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-9Skz7FxDND4Os9iOM8HfD2pFAde3TYT/view?usp=share_link

I have to admit... I really love Ethan episodes.  I think because they are naturally very Giles based (and we all love a bit of Rupert), but this episode was definitely right up my alley!  Genuinely thought we were losing a character, too! D:

This is one I feel could have easily be a 2 parter, but that is in no means a bad thing! And we got more scary Willow, too (quickly becoming my favourite thing).

Love you, guys! Sorry it is a day late, this week as been chaos!

As always, if you click the link straight away, you may need to download the video instead of stream it. This should be fixed in an hour or so! :)

Hope you are having a wonderful weekend!!

I'm so glad you appreciate the lamps used in the show. Giles dragonfly lamp started a personal love affair with Tiffany style lamps for me and I now have a small collection whoever was responsible for the props had great taste. Another Buffy reactor hated them lol

Do you know who Gavin Rossdale is? The lead singer of Bush? I thought it was really funny that you had just mentioned Kurt Cobian right before that line :)

Kristin Carter

Yeah, that's the answer google gave me as well...nice to see that I didn't missunderstand that😅🙂

Good to see Giles making mistakes in this episode. lt makes him more human. He was so embarrassed about messing with dark magic when he was young that he was dishonest with Buffy and put his friends in danger.

Quid is basically the British equivalent of “bucks” 😄

No worries a lot goes on in this show and I realize so much more about it with every rewatch haha

What I particularly like about this episode is how it builds on the previous one. As I mentioned in another comment, I tend to see the evolution of the relationships more than the concepts of the episode. So, for me, the last one was about Buffy growing up, seeing that the world is more complex than a simple right/wrong answer. In this episode, she starts to see that adults are just as human as teenagers. I love Willow assering her authority over the "study group" and coming up with the solution. I also love Badass Giles so much. I refuse to call him Scary Giles. LOL Giles un-tweeding himself is always fantastic. I'd give this episode a 7,5/10, too. Oh, and please invest my 20 quid in a Woozle fund of some sort. :)

Really enjoyed this episode and you're reaction to it. Willow being fed up with Xander's and Cordelia's bullshit was the best! Also: Waiting patiently to find my 20 quid in the mail🙃 (And no, I certainly did not need to google what quid are because I'm not British!🙈😅)

Haven't listened to the episode itself yet. But I just wanted to tell you that you shouldn't feel bad about being down at the end of the last episode! We're here to see your genuine reaction and if your reaction is being down then that's totally valid🙂!

Diego Zenhäusern

Oh my gosh, you're right! I forgot all about that. Thanks for correcting me, Amanda S!

I expect my 20 Squid any day now :P Keep it up Vegggie!

Just thought I'd mention here that Sheila wasn't killed offscreen, she was fed on by Dru and then turned into a vampire offscreen. We see her with Buffy during the attack on parent/teacher night after Dru fed on her. She meets up with Buffy, but Buffy doesn't realize she's a vampire, but we see Sheila following Buffy with the axe and she shows her vampire face while Buffy's not watching her. But then she runs off when she sees buffy kill another vampire so she's still out there somewhere.

Love this one!!!! We are in a great run of episodes right now!!! I’d say 8/10. Maybe 7.5 (I forget what I rated Halloween etc lol). I agree it could have been a two parter, there was so much ground to cover. Something about this ep is so quintessential season 2 to me. I love finding out more about Giles background, giving him more depth. Heartbreaking when Jenny steps back at the end :( think she just feels violated and blames Giles for it. I think they make sure a good pair as well. I like Ethan Rayne as well, he’s just good at being a villain however I think overuse might wear his appeal a bit thin. What really are his motivations beyond being a menace in a few side quests? Regarding Spike’s ham sandwich of an accent, I’ve said before that I can forgive it slightly because he is very old. My auntie had lived in Oregon for 40 years and you’d never guess she was born in Glasgow from the accent!! Surely 100 years in the US and beyond has warped it?? (I’m fully making excuses at this point). Believe it or not there are far worse English accents on the show 🥲 Anyway loved your reaction as usual Veg!! I’m so glad you are doing Buffy 🖤

Sorry Raven Dark! I didn't make myself clear here! I know of the Sound of Music, and when I said about the reference, I was talking about Buffy not knowing it! XD I am actually younger than Buffy is meant to be here, and frankly everyone my age knows the sound of music, so Calender certainly should (back in the day, we used to watch and listen to much older stuff than the 'kidz of today' do! XD )! Also, I only remarked about the 'Math' thing because they were directly talking about Giles, who at school would have referred to it as 'Maths'! XD Yeah I do feel I have been overly judgmental on Spike's one liners! XD He is such a great character though! Glad you really like this episode too! I was worried it would be one that I loved more than the general pop!

"The hills are not alive..." Giles said that because earlier, Jenny Calender said, "I'm fine. Not the-hills-are-alive-with-the-sound-of-music fine, but..." Both lines are a reference to a movie that came out in 1969, called The Sound of Music. It's a musical, and at the start of the film, the opening song begins with the line, "The hills are alive, with the sound of music..." In theory, people might think Jenny is too young to be referencing it, but it's still a hugely well known piece of pop culture, and it was even more well known when this show came out 20 years ago. It makes sense that she would know of it. In reference to the math vs maths thing, no, in the US I believe most people say math, without the s. I'm from Canada, and it's math here too. Shiela is a one-off character. We didn't see it, but we're supposed to assume Drucilla fed off her and killed her offstage. Phillip probably didn't sound English because he was from the US. I think lots of people from the US go to Oxford, don't they? I know of a few people who graduated from Oxford who are from the US and Canada. Spike has had lots of good lines to me, but that kind of thing is very subjective, I suppose. I do love Ethan as a character though, and a lot of his lines are great. I really like this episode, and your reaction didn't disappoint. Excited to see more reactions from this season.

There's something special about this season. We've had several "side quest" episodes, and yet we've already come SO far in terms of character and story. Buffy has worked through her trauma of the year before - The Anointed One is gone - Spike and Drusilla have set up camp - Giles has an established love interest and it's already gone well enough that we can feel truly gutted when it goes so poorly here. Then we got a hint of a past between Ethan and Giles, and here only two episodes later we have so much explained to us. This season sometimes sleeps on me, but it's a good one.
