Buffy Fridays! Season 2 Episode 4 First Time Reaction!

Loose Cannon.

Hi guys! Another great episode, this one went in a completely different direction than I was expecting!  Definitely feels like classic 'Side Quest'! Another sympathetic villain, and a potential new regular character?

Willow in the Eskimo outfit made my 2022.

See you next week for a Christmasy (probably not Christmasy) episode!

Have a great weekend!

NOTE - If you try to watch it straight away, you may need to download it first. This is because Google Drive takes an Ice Age to process videos sometimes.  So sorry about that, hopefully it will be streamable in a few hours!

Buffy Fridays! Season 2 Episode 4 First Time Reaction!

I love this episode because of Oz. Willow deserves to have someone look at her in an eskimo costume and be absolutely smitten. I've never been a big Xander fan, not even the first time watching from series 1, and this episode didn't change my mind. He was super possessive of Buffy when he thought Ampata the boy was going to stay with her, was condescending as hell to Ampata the girl with his miming when she is clearly speaking English well, his line about loving Ampata just because she thought she didn't deserve him rubbed me the wrong way and in this whole Ampata/Xander situation, I actually really just empathise with Ampata. Her story was so tragic and I'd kill people to stay alive now too if I were her. Willow IS the best friend Xander never deserved.

Seth Green, better known nowadays as Chris from Family Guy and the creator of Robot Chicken; but to Buffy fans he'll always be Oz, and to me he'll be "stoner from the Pilot episode of X-Files" 😂

Hahhhh... This episode isn't bad, but it hasn't aged well. Buffy (the series) sadly does step in it a few times when it comes to cultural representation that is anything except white...

I completely forgot Seth Green showed up in this series! I knew that he was familiar watching Austin Powers, it was just a random dood from a tv show:P Seth has made loads of cartoon content and other stuff. I wanna suggest you check out his works but that might ruin your vision of the series. I don't know if he shows up more than just one or two times.

Loved your Bane impression, 10/10 xD! Potentially having to download the videos is fine for me...though I usually don't get around to watch them right away anyways (as you might see by the timing of this comment😅) so that's usually not an issue for me. I quite liked this episode. And I actually interpreted the ending differently: To me it felt/ looked more like Ampata said that she could kill Xander. But then she still hesitated and that's what ultimately killed her.🤔 Though one could definitely also argue that she wasn't hesitating but just not strong enough anymore to overpower him. But I don't think there is a definitive answer either way, just thought I'd bring my interpretation to the table.🙃

Cordelia's family is very wealthy. Some of the references might not translate well but in the first season, she yelled at one girl who was wearing a knock off of a one of a kind designer outfit that Cordelia was wearing. She also was having a custom dress designed for the dance in episode 11 because "off the rack gives me hives." And in episode 1 of this season she complained that her parents took her to Tuscany for the summer instead of St. Croix like they had originally planned.

I can only speak for myself, but yes, I'm willing and able to download if needed. :) As always, loved your reaction, and thank you for sharing your time with this show with us! Yes, that's Seth Green. It was really awesome to see him on the screen again. A very sympathetic villain, the Incan mummy. Sixteen years old, her entire future taken away, and for 500 years she could hear and understand what was going on around her. So her conscious mind was literally trapped inside an unmoving body, unable to speak, to interact, people gawking at her and moving her around. She lived a nightmare for 5 *centuries*! It's hard to fault her despite the fact that she was committing murder, but yet that's a horrible thing and she would have to keep doing it to stay alive. Of course Willow felt happy to discover that the faux-Ampata was the mummy and couldn't be Xander's girlfriend. Although she logically made the decision to move on, the emotions themselves don't just go away on a snap. It takes time and consistent resolve.

This is probably a 4. It's one I'm likely to skip on re-watch but not one of the worst. Willow is my favorite purely because of her costume. It makes me so sad every time, though, when she questions whether she should have worn something more "sexy". Girlfriend, no. Don't change who you are in order for a boy to like you. I just really don't like the characters in this episode. Giles just assumes that a teenager from modern day Peru can translate pictographs that are how old now? Xander has to fall for the newest "hot" girl. (I have no issue with his not having a thing for Willow because you can't force that on someone.) Willow being all oogly sad over Xander. (I get that's being a teenager, but it bothers me with this episode in particular.) Buffy being all having to "save" Rodney before he gets himself in trouble. (It's not really her position to stop him. If he wants to get into trouble, that's his prerogative.)

Downloading is good

I enjoyed how much you sympathised with the mummy in this episode. I'm disappointed in Giles though, I thought he would have a little more tact and exchange some pleasantries before immediately recruiting Ampata to translate the artefact!

I actually really love this episode!!! I forgot this was the one wear willow wears her iconic Eskimo outfit (not even sure if that’s actually the right term but alas). I also love the band playing!!! The real band is called Four Star Mary and I love their music. Buffy has a great soundtrack and showcased a lot of great indie bands in that time period. Also, I’d go so far to say that there’s no monster of the week episodes that are actually bad, they are always enjoyable (I can maybe think of one in the whole run of Buffy that isn’t). I feel like they are well written in the fact that they tie into our core four and help establish their characters along the way. But poor Xander!!! He’s a monster magnet!!
