Hi Guys! Sorry for the wait on this! Here is the first of my new Movie Reaction series, The Lord of the Rings!  I have mentioned before, this is the only Rings movie I have seen before, but it was long ago and upon rewatching I clearly don't remember the vast majority of it!

Plz note - This is the Extended edition of the movie, so please use that to sync too (I have only seen the standed version previously).

Really loved this one, and I have a clear fav character to announce next time (I make it pretty clear at the end of this though XD).

Let me know who your favourite character is from Fellowship! Can't wait to continue on this journey (and back again ;) ).

Comments

It probably has already been pointed out, but Gimli's hair gift was encased in amber or crystal or something, symbolic of their renewed friendship between dwarves and elves.

Jordan Long

2022! I never would have left! I had no idea you reacted to these! I can't wait to be in this space again with you; thank you!

Jordan Long

You mentioned you'd like more background on Aragorn and Arwen and how they met - not going to spoil anything in case you're looking to read the books (all explained in the appendices!) just a fun fact for now - they are first cousins! (61 times removed though :) )

Katik

Just because you asked, Gandalf is a Maiar, not human in any sense

Luckless

The thing to remember is the Shire is England (at the time of J.R.R. Tolkien's youth) idealised, Hobbits are middle-class/working-class English (primarily Brumy rural/farmland people's of the Victorian/Edwardian age). If you have the chance go to the Sarehole Mill Museum just outside of Birmingham, a fantastic place to learn about Tolkien and the real world history behind Middle-earth

Luckless

This happens to me with every movie reaction, but I just keep pausing the DVD version for two seconds here and there. It's definitely a little frustrating but it works 😅

emmainkeri

My extended edition DVD version played much faster than your reaction which was quite frustrating so I bought the Youtube version which works splendidly

Marc Post

Your reaction was all I could have hoped. The extended versions will give you the satisfaction you desire.

Jim Schmitz

Would love to see you cover the LOTR books after you finish the Harry Potter series. I'd really like to get your reaction and thoughts on what was left out of the movies and what was changed. But other than that I really love your reaction to LOTR movies and can't wait to see more.

Justin Sikes

lord of the rings was always a series i loved but could never really fully understand, ive picked up so much more watching this with you than i ever have. boromirs last words actually had me in fucking tears.

Kega

Thanks so much, Aegis! I can't wait to check out the next one, love these characters so much already!!

VEGGIE GAMER

That's fair, Simon! Yeah my plan is to cover Fantastic Beasts soon after LotR (before I cover The Hobbit too), and Hunger Games & Maze Runner are definitely on the cards too! See you then! :)

VEGGIE GAMER

I just subscribed here because I just love LOTR so much and you are very entertaining. There are so many behind the scenes things that I would like to tell you, but instead, I will just make a suggestion: After watching this series, watch the full behind the scenes - Multiple hours long and its all on youtube. Shows just how much effort was put in for this project. Can't watch for The Two Towers. Maybe my favorite of the bunch!

Aegis Duensing

I don't like LOTR so will leave for now and come back when you move onto the next series which hopefully will be Fantastics Beasts as that makes most sense. If not that at least let it be Hunger Games but if you do Hunger Games then you need to tie Maze Runner into it.

Simon

Wow, interesting...I always assumed that Merry and Pipin would only be like 1 or 2 years apart and not nearly 10😮😅

Diego Zenhäusern

I wrote this on YouTube but I wanted to say I loved this reaction so much! I had been meeting to rewatch these movies and really look forward to the next one! Hopefully won’t have to wait too long but I know it’s a commitment to watch them in one sitting. 💜

LunaTheTrip

A list you might find useful, names and places that get mentioned the most. Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin Aragorn (Elessar), Boromir, Legolas, Gimli Gandalf, Galadriel & Celeborn, Elrond, Arwen, Isildur (from the flashbacks, had the ring) Denethor, Faramir Théoden, Éowyn, Éomer, Gríma Wormtongue, Gamling Gollum (Sméagol), The Nazgûl (Ringwraiths), Saruman, Sauron, the Uruk-Hai The Shire, Weathertop (where Frodo first got stabbed), Rivendell (not Riverdale, heh), Moria, Lóthlorien, Rohan, Gondor, Minas Tirith, Minas Morgul, Mordor, Isengard, Fangorn Forest, Mount Doom

emmainkeri

When Veggie asks questions that will be answered so we just wait. My favorite character is Aragorn. I read once that Aragorn is the example of what mankind strives to be. Brave, honest, unshakable, and not wanting power. While Boromir is the example of how mankind is. Trying to do what’s right while still coming up short. Not sure if that’s an accurate, or positive, statement but I can see what they meant. My second favorite would be Samwise. Can’t wait for the next movie. Also, don’t be too hard on Peregrin (aka Pippin) he’s the youngest of the group and not technically an adult by Hobbit standards. He was only 29 and Hobbits come of age at 33.

Kattie Martin

The movie doesn't show the time compression so the viewer isn't aware that Pippin at about 27 is still considered basically a teenager in Hobbit age. Hobbits aren't considered adults until they turn 33. Frodo is 50, Samwise Gamgee is 38 and Merry (Merriadoc) Brandybuck is 36 when they all leave the Shire.

Annette Elliott

*Me seeing this on my feed* "oh yay im excited.. how long is it.. 'click' AHAAHAA THATS FOUR HOURS wooooo gunna be a good day tomorrow" lol im sad i cant watch this now but so excited

Kega

well, looks like I found out what I'm going to be doing on saturday ;)

JablesBoogley

Yhere is some time compression in the beginning since there was supposed to be 17 years between when Gandalf left the Shire and when he returned to tell Frodo to leave.

Annette Elliott

One of my favourite little details in these films that is really easy to miss... When Boromir's body goes over the Falls, we see Aragorn strapping on a pair of bracers emblazoned with the White Tree of Gondor. These belonged to Boromir, and if you watch closely you can see that Aragorn wears them throughout the rest of the series. Such a beautiful little detail.

Rebecca May

Ooh, thanks so much Simon! Yeah Boromir really did seem like such an interesting character, and in a way I really like the way he went out (though I was in tears XD)

VEGGIE GAMER

I'm so glad you loved Boromir this much, he's my favourite too! Just joined your patreon for this reaction and I loved it, it's always great to watch someone fall in love with this series. But I won't have this Pippin slander, he's perfectly relatable (how I always manage to forget how much of a klutz he is in FOTR is beyond me)

Simon Bank

Thanks for all the great info, Tami!! Wow, you must live in a beautiful part of the world! :)

VEGGIE GAMER

Hi Veggie, thanks for antother great reaction. You are now not only reacting to my favourite book series (Harry Potter) but also my favourite film series 😊. I’ll gladly answer some questions for you. The names of the other two hobbits (besides Frodo and Sam) are Meriadoc Brandybock and Peregrin Tuk, but everyone calls them Merry and Pippin which are their nicknames. Frodos birthday is actually on the same day as Bilbo’s (22 September) and when Bilbo turns 111, Frodo becomes 33 which is when Hobbits come of age (like when we turn 18). So Hobbits have a slightly larger live span than humans. What you can’t see in the film is that 17 years (!) pass until Frodo leaves the shire, so he is 50 by then, the same age when Bilbo left for his adventures. But since Frodo has the ring he barely aged (physically). What happend to the other rings (besides the nine) is only covered in the books. Sauron got three of the dwarf rings back, the other four were destroyed by dragonfire. The elves are the only ones who managed to keep their rings hidden from Sauron, so all three are still in their possession. Also I have to mention that Tolkien got his inspiration for Rivendell in the small towns Lauterbrunnen and Mürren in Switzerland which is actually very close to where I live (yes I am bragging a little bit 😊) and there is a specific vantage point that looks quite similar to how it looks in the film!

Tämi

I'm not deep in the fandom (I'm only a very casual viewer of the movies) so I don't know how controversial this is but I personally enjoy the movies more than the books. I read all three LOTR books and I think they were fine but just written kinda verbose and even a little boring at times. So I found them hard to get through and didn't enjoy them as much😕 Though I have to admit that I honestly can't recall how much the movies leave out compared to the books (a it's been like 6 or 7 years since I read them), so I don't know how much additional information you actually get out of the books🤔 However, if people tought they're worth it and he decides to do the books I'd probably there to give them another try🤔🙂

Diego Zenhäusern

Wow, that's really cool😮

Diego Zenhäusern

Wait..realy? Lol, luckily the actor as good reactions 😅

Diego Zenhäusern

You should not change your behavior just to please this or that fandom... if they dont like your comments about harry potter, they dont deserve your content, its as easy as that

Benjamin Hütz

I agree with all of this! But since he watched HP first, that will be his reference point. And all I am saying is that the LOTR die hard fans will throw daggers whenever he references Harry Potter. We know what he means when he says those things. But there will be thousands of new viewers coming in who are LOTR weirdos that will post awful comments if he doesn't remove those HP references. And if he chooses to keep those in, then we will have to be very present on Youtube to cut them down.

PaulaC

(Relatively) new patron and fellow Hufflepuff here and thoroughly enjoyed your reaction! I had the same sync issue as Annie (see my reply above for the amusing technique I used to overcome it). Regarding the frequent comparisons to Harry Potter, I agree to some extent with Paula's comment above. I noticed that at least twice, you clearly acknowledge that LOTR came first and that everything else (including Harry Potter) draws inspiration from Tolkien. Not everyone will catch these acknowledgments during the reaction even if you leave them in (please do) when editing for YouTube. It may be difficult to stop yourself from drawing comparisons when it is so natural and spontaneous (and this authenticity is an integral part of what lends value to your reactions), so, if you can't or don't want to edit out the comparison comments, I would suggest that you explain this and acknowledge the ordering clearly right at the beginning during the intro. I can see that you tried hard to avoid referring to Gandalf as Dumbledore, but still slipped a few times (and caught yourself about half the time and apologized). Like Paula, I don't mind at all, and in fact, I find it very interesting to explore many of these similarities and find "hidden" connections. Beyond the most obvious similarities (Sauron = Voldemort, Ring = Horcrux, etc.), I find many much subtler similarities (to varying degrees, some only in appearance/semantics while others in intent/functionality) quite fascinating. For example, the Star of Eärendil (Galadriel's gift to Frodo) vs. the Deluminator (Dumbledore's bequest to Ron) and the Mirror of Galadriel vs. Dumbledore's Pensieve. Both Gandalf and Dumbledore literally fell. Boromir, Gollum, and Snape are some of the most complex characters. Frodo and Harry both lost their parents and were taken in by relatives (Frodo by his cousin whom he sees as an "uncle" and Harry by his actual aunt and uncle). You commented on Sam vs. Ron in your reaction. (By the way, Sam is from a lower social class than Frodo and works for him as his gardener, which is why he calls him Master/Mister Frodo.) And all this (I'm sure there are more) is just from the first LOTR film! Please don't apologize for expressing your authentic emotions! Boromir's death and Sam's loyalty at the end get me every. single. time. I loved it and am eagerly awaiting the next one. And was the expression you used near the end when Aragon turned to face the entire army of Uruk-hai on his own "balls on toes" or "balls on toast"? :)

Raga G

Loved the reaction! If I could make a small suggestion, though.... We here on your Patreon don't care and won't care about your frequent mentions of Harry Potter because that's why we joined for the most part. But the LOTR fandom loves to eviscerate reactors who make comparisons or mess up names. As if saying "this is like what happened in Harry Potter" means you don't realize which one came first. The word "like" is pretty much an equal sign, but the fandom goes nuts when people say that. I guess what I'm saying is that you will get a new audience when you post these to YouTube, and they are not always kind. You should consider editing out those things as much as possible. Again, I certainly don't care and loved your reaction. I just don't want to see you get a ton of negative comments when you spent nearly 4 hrs watching this video for us. Looking forward to the next one!

PaulaC

My cousins live mere minutes away from Hobbiton (I'm a Kiwi originally, in the UK now), and I can tell you that it's truly as beautiful in person as it looks in the films.

Rebecca May

I’m on vacation atm, but as soon as I get home, this is the first thing I’m watching! ☺️ I hope you enjoyed the first one. Welcome to Middle Earth!

Ana Mendes

This trilogy is a love affair with the landscape of NZ. It makes every person want to live there.

Melanie P

Just got finished with the reaction! I really wouldn't worry about the comments asking you not to write notes - if you didn't, you would just get people complaining that you need notes to remember everything. Did you miss a few seconds of the movie here and there? Yes. But people need to remember that a) this is a first time reaction and you won't get everything, and b) you watch the movie again to edit this for youtube. It's fine. I really enjoyed the reaction! You made some comments that Gimli wasn't there in the final fight against the Uruk-hai; he actually was, but the shots were quick and he (or his stunt double at least) is little lol. Echoing another comment, if you're at all interested in film production, I think it's worth watching the appendices (either as a reaction or on your own). They're incredibly well done. I seriously just want to binge the last two movies with you right now, there's so much that I'm excited for you to see! Can't wait for the next reaction! To answer your question - my favorite member of the fellowship is actually Frodo. In a weird way, I find the relationship he develops with the ring to be really interesting. And the moment at the beach at the end when he closes his fist on the ring and starts moving breaks me down in tears every time.

Maia

Loving the reactions so far! You mentioned at one point possibly looking at the books... That would be enjoyable but certainly an undertaking! I haven't seen it mentioned so I'd highly recommend looking at watching the 'appendices' documentaries that were released with the extended editions after the trilogy. They have a bit more information on backgrounds of characters and why certain parts might be missing vs the book, and of course behind the scenes of how it was filmed with forced perspective shots and miniatures etc, I think you might really enjoy them and they help dive you into the world of the story a little more. Keep up the great work!

Dinsdale_

Another Fun Fact: When Lurtz (the big uruk-hai leader) threw the dagger at Aragorn in the final fight, he was meant to miss by a few meters. He accidentally threw the dagger right at Aragorn, which could have injured him really badly... luckily he managed to parry the dagger with his sword.

Benjamin Hütz

Gandalf and Sauron are both the same race, it's not explained in the movies though.

Michael Short

Fun fact: Christopher Lee (the actor of Saruman) was suggested to play Gandalf by Tolkien (book author) himself. I dont know the details why he ended up as Saruman years later when the movies were finally made, but initially he was not happy about it. He was a friend of Tolkien and really wanted to act as Gandalf.

Benjamin Hütz

Sorry Annie, There are clips, but every 20 minutes (of the video time, rather than the movie). I guess I can add more, but they have to be pretty short clips to avoid copyright issues.

VEGGIE GAMER

Can I make a recommendation? It would be really useful if once in a while you could show a few seconds of the movie. It's really hard to synchronize when videos are this long, and it's especially true with LOTR since many of us will own the extended cuts of the movies in two parts (they were released on two separate dvds back then). If you show the movie for a few seconds, it'll help greatly those of us who need to resync (depending on the version you own, the timer isn't always accurate).

Annie

This was an amazing thing to see when I got up today. Watching ASAP :D

Triene (Katie)

You are completely right, H! In this I really felt the need to jot down names as I wasn't sure what would be important later, now I have the main crew's names down, hopefully I can ease up on it next time! Sorry about all the looking down, I will try to limit myself doing it!! :)

VEGGIE GAMER

I love that you are watching this now, Veggie! Always interesting to see your reaction to stuff. As I mentioned with the HP reaction, I think it would be smart to write less during the videos. I understand why you do it of course, but especially with LotR it is SO visual. I end up sitting there saying "look up!" and "no, you don't need to write down the name of the pub!" as if I'm cheering on someone in some sort of sport competition! :D I love that you're doing the extended versions, by the way. I think you'll enjoy them more than you would've enjoyed the shorter version.

H

us hbo max?

weplush

Ah don't have access to extended versions , will have to wait for it to go on YouTube x

Clarissa

Awesome Indre! Thanks so much for the pledge!

VEGGIE GAMER

The fate of Artex destroyed me as well.

GOTnissa

I've actually only watched a third of this movie a year ago so this will actually help me finally watch them!

Indre Duobaite

Yesssssssss so excited! I can't wait to get home so I can watch

Kristin Carter

Lol I don't even have to wait to get home, I can just play the reaction! I know LOTR by heart, frame by frame and I bet I'm not the only one! 😂

emmainkeri

Wow wow wow!! I was not expecting this to be so soon! Must watch ASAP!! 🔥
