Denken had planned for Frieren, but remember how she told Fern that basic spells would be enough to beat most mages of this generation? Denken is no exception to that, he came in with a plan but Frieren's mastery of the basics and her depth of mana, combined with her battle experience...Frieren required so much focus on offense towards her and her defenses, that there wasn't time to really strategize beyond that...Denken had instinctively react when Frieren went on the offensive unexpectedly fast, but Denken was caught off guard with how quickly Frieren could attack. You'll find out later, more about Frieren and how much of a problem her fighting ability is for so many because she is so powerful but has focused so much on the basics.
