Shadow creatures, inhabitants of the Shadowfell, and more are in this week's Monster Thursday! The plane of shadow is a place haunting sorrow, undead galore, and wayward souls all seeking an escape from this dismal plane of existence... but what else might you find here? If you were to take a stroll, not recommended, through the boneyards and even the city of Gloomwrought, what would you find?
The monsters are a collection from previous editions to folklore and mythology, to my own ideas as to what might be found in the shadows.
Darkwyrm (CR 20) Can't go anywhere without a dragon popping up its snarling head and demanding your life and treasure. The darkwyrms were originally from the River Styx, and appear in 2nd edition as Styx dragons who prowl around and gobble up sailing fiends who are just trying to fight in the Blood War. It seemed likely that these creatures would love a place like the Shadowfell as they are a fan of diseases and rot.
Gashadokuro (CR 8) So it's not just a skeleton, but dozens of skeletons combined into a singular Voltron-like form. They are taken from Japanese mythology where the bones of dead after a battle animate and form into an oversized creature fifteen times the size of a normal human. They then go around, grabbing people and biting their head off to squeeze all that delicious blood out. These gashadokuro also get the special ability to launch the bones that make them up, smashing into nearby creatures - each time they use this ability they decrease in size until they get a chance to gather up their missing bones. Pretty gnarly.
Lampad (CR 3) The basis for these creatures come from greek lore and are shadownyphs, or infernalnymphs. While the lore has them coming from the hells, I figured I would save the Avernales for a separate creature when I, one day, do more devils. These creatures are unique in that they can make creatures forget, or ignore, that they even exist, which allows them to escape by without much notice.
Shadow Person (CR 2) Many have claimed to have seen these shadow people while paralyzed, after taking some legal, and illegal, drugs. What if these people are real? And the original inhabitants of the Shadowfell? They are mysterious, difficult to pin down, and only interested in being passive observers of time.
Udinyo (CR 3) What's more terrifying than a spider? How about two spiders melded into a singular creature? These double-sided spiders aren't actually arachanids, but I don't think most adventurers will care when they see this creature clambering around with its sixteen legs. They like to grab creatures, hoist them on their back, and then run off with them into the darkness where they can feed on them in peace.
And those are the monsters for this week! If you have a request for some monsters or certain theme of monsters, please let me know!
