My Hero Academia: Vigilantes 1x02 "Takeoff" - reaction & review

Hey everyone! Here it is - my reaction to episode 2 of Vigilantes! Holy cow, we get the debut of The Crawler, some fun scenes with Aizawa, and more of the group dynamic in this one! We also bring up some interesting points about how vigilantes can move about a bit more freely than pro heroes...whether or not that's always a good thing will be focused on more in the future, I'm sure! Also JOTARO, JOSUKE?! What are they doing here?! LOL!!! Enjoy! ~ MH

Omg I loved reading this!! You touched on so many great points, and I’m totally with you—this episode had so much going on, and it was all so well done. The Koichi and Izuku comparison is super interesting; they’re cut from a similar cloth but handle things in such different ways, and I love how the show leans into that. And YES, the Aizawa vs. Knuckleduster fight?? So clean. The animation really showed off how fast and skilled Aizawa is, and Knuckle keeping up with him for that long?? Absolute madness. The man is unhinged and loving every second—definitely gives off chaotic Batman energy if Batman was broke and said “laws?? never heard of ‘em” 😂 I was so hyped to see your thoughts on Knuckleduster being quirkless, because SAME—it makes him even more of a beast. The fact that he’s willing to let people think he’s a villain just to do what needs to be done?? Wild. I also appreciated Aizawa backing off once he realized Knuckle technically wasn’t in the wrong—like, yeah, still sus, but no rules broken. Respect. Pop Step was such an MVP this episode too!! Her noticing that sketchy businessman popping up near villain activity? Sharp as ever. And her whole reaction to Koichi saving her?? Adorable. I loved that it was kind of an awkward save because it fits him—and the fact that he risks himself without even thinking about it is just peak Koichi. I also really liked how that moment showed a weakness in Pop’s quirk—having no surface to bounce off was such a smart detail! Also, the Trigger-powered villains were such a cool way to raise the stakes, and I liked the nod to it lasting longer like they mentioned in MHA Season 4. The whole vibe with civilians treating villain attacks like entertainment? Chilling, but super on-brand for this world. And can we talk about Knuckle swinging on that gigantified guy?? Absolute legend. Loved the Koichi + Knuckle team-up too—their dynamic is gold already. Koichi distracting while Knuckle goes full offense? Great teamwork, even better chaos. And Pop casually building a tiny info network through her fanbase?? Genius. Her hop-hop exit was the cherry on top 😆 Also YES to Koichi embracing “The Crawler”—it suits him so well, and I’m really excited to see how he grows into that name. The costume upgrades are a nice touch too; it makes sense that he’d need protection if he’s speeding around like that now. Your Jojo callout was spot on too—I am totally brainrotted lol but I'm glad I was at least right in this case!! And it is hilarious seeing Koichi having to explain basic morals like “don’t punch people just because it feels good” while Knuckle just stares blankly like “why tho” 😅 Anyway, this was such an amazing breakdown—thanks so much for sharing it!! I’m loving this show more and more each week, especially with how it dives into the gray areas of hero society. Can’t wait to see where it all goes from here! Don't worry, I had my bee ready in the next ep too lol!

I love this episode the content it covers is great. Nice commentary at the start love how you brought up the similarities but differences between Koichi & Izuku it’s interesting to talk about. I love how Aizawa is animated in this show & I love how the animators showed off his agility and speed in his fight against Knuckleduster. Considering Aizawa is 1 of the best hand-to-hand fighters in MHA it’s especially impressive that Knuckleduster fought him for so long & was able to take so many hits & keep going. Like other comments said yeah the best way to talk about Knuckleduster is unhinged the man is enjoying the fight which feels like some depictions of Batman but with a lot less money LOL. I was so excited to hear/see your reaction/thoughts about Knuckleduster being quirkless because it’s just so cool & badass that he’s a normal guy tougher than most. It seems like he might be fine with people assuming he’s a villain if that Aspect of his personality/looks allows him to accomplish his goals as an illegal hero. I appreciate that Aizawa apologizes for the fight once he realizes no laws are being broken since Knuckle was technically using self-defense but I understand wanting to notify the police since someone who looks/acts like Knuckle does is indeed suspicious. I love Pop’s intelligence & observational skills with her realizing that she had seen that businessman often around instant villain trouble and I like how much initiative she has going after him immediately. It’s interesting how Koichi & Pop are technically breaking the law as well using their powers in everyday life although I always assumed that because their quirks are relatively unobtrusive/not powerful that at most they would get fined rather than arrested. I think those thugs showing up & attacking Koichi/causing chaos & the businessman with the gigantification ability doing the same is a good way to show how strong this version of Trigger is & I believe in season 4 it was mentioned that the drug used to last longer as well. Also the red eyes & the way the businessman was acting was a good way of depicting the addicting nature of Trigger. I like the moment of one civilian wanting to take a picture of the big villain which goes back to something said at the end of MHA S6 that not everyone but many people forgot that heroes were human & started seeing heroes fighting villains as a show they were watching at least that’s what I thought of. It really shows Knuckle’s strength when he swings & kicks the giant villain in the head and actually makes the Giant start to stumble. I love Koichi’s big moment in this episode of saving Pop when she is falling when we find out a big weakness of her quirk needing something to jump off of to use it. It’s awesome to see Koichi sliding up the side of a building & I think he always was able to go up walls just never had a reason or the motivation to do so. I honestly love that Koichi saves Pop in an awkward way because it fits his character although it does put his life in danger. It’s call how the villian accidentally saved Koichi by giving him something to cling to. I love Aizawa’s role Capturing villians & saving Koichi and it’s great how while he doesn’t approve of the vigilantes he’s grateful for the help maybe him not wanting them to get in over their heads because of the death of his friend during school. I love how Pop is so grateful for Koichi saving her life shown by her embarrassment/getting flustered which is adorable & I like how she doesn’t like his self-deprecation and considering he was a true hero in that moment I think she while she’s right. I love Knuckle’s mindset about how basically actions mean more than words especially in the heat of the moment. I like how our group is also dealing with simple issues like middle school students sizing. I love the upgrades to his costume with protective gear allowing him to go faster because it seems likely that it does damage if he went too fast before this since Knuckle says the gear is why he can go faster. These kids being X-Men reference is great I like how they seem like good guys just rough around the edges with their interactions with Koichi. You are definitely brain rotted about Jojo but you aren’t wrong since these kids are based on the same kind of Japanese culture as Jotaro & Josuke. It’s crazy how Koichi has to explain why you can’t always use violence & Knuckle not understanding that and asking why he can’t use violence because it feels good is wild. I love how Pop defuses the situation with her star power so to speak & it’s cute how these kids are fans of hers. It’s so great to see Koichi save that baby what a hero. I love how great Koichi & Knuckle’s teamwork is already against this Rock villain with Koichi being the distraction & Knuckle as the offense and I love how Koichi had a great recovery after being surround back. It’s awesome how Pop makes a small information network very easily with online media. I love how because the instant villains aren’t used to their stronger powers it creates weaknesses & it shows Knuckle’s intuition/intelligence that he can see through them and take them down easily but in a hello way. It’s hilarious how they see the zones because Knuckle went too far LOL. I love Pop’s little hop, hop & pose as she says see you later. Also the announcement from Koichi about the new heroes with his new name & I like how he wants to reinvent himself a little with the crawler title and I love that name it works well for his character. I almost forgot but I love the mid cards they are cute & fun. I like the sillier aspects of Koichi’s character because race it brings some light to the darker parts of this show. I love Tsukauchi being part of this show since he is really important in the main show & it’s really interesting that he is antagonistic to our group in this show and it makes sense for his character & this time period of the MHA world I wonder how this will develop. I love the names the public came up with sure our guys & the online comments are amazing LMAO. I love how interested you are in Knuckleduster & Pop and I’m glad you are enjoying the show so far. I like how you brought up the issues with hero society in your review this show is a good place to talk about that since it involves vigilantes. Sorry it was late but bring your bees. Awesome reaction & thoughts. Keep up the great work. :-) <3

Supermonaman

It really does! LOL they were totally Jojo references, and X-men! I totally get what you mean about Koichi, he is super relatable for many of us I think! Hahaha THANK YOU Manny, I'm glad someone gets it about the toys erm, collectibles!! That's what I thought about the detective, thanks! I'm gonna film it tomorrow, I need to get my bee ready! OMG to think that someone would defile a toy that way :O

This series does pose an interesting concept. I love it! Lol I was waiting for the two middle school punks to show. Idk if they’re jojo x X-men inspired but it wouldn’t surprise me XD I used to say Deku was me if I had moxie and intelligence. Koichi is me— plain and simple. Izuku had ambitions and was the series definition of a hero to the hilt, but just needed a chance to show off. Koichi’s the same but I think he has a more realistic view of his own life. Wanting to feel like a hero, even more a moment is an attainable goal, even though they are breaking rules by doing so. Also they are not toys, they are collectibles! 🧸 Yeah detective Tsukauchi is in the main series. 🕵️ It’s been a couple days now. I don’t know if you filmed already but don’t forget the bee 🐝 Alright now I gotta check if my figures have any hidden trigger in them.
