With the way things like this usually go, it turns out the teacher in question is all part of the conspiracy against the MC in the first place. I hope that is not the case for Mai and he is just a bad person and gets kicked out of academia and out of the sanctuary city as well.

I have read everything from completely off the wall fiction to non-fiction autobiographies including some of the most famous names so just Dean Koontz Stephen King Anne McCaffrey Robert Jordan and many many others. This is by far some of the most intriguing and engaging writing I have ever read. I'm greatly looking forward to the chapters that explore what happened to Mai's arm and what is going on between her and her father. I originally thought what was going to be on her arm was hesitation marks when the suicide attempt but given the way that she reflects on her decision at the end of the big fight I don't think that is the case

Seen way too many teachers that just fell into the career path when they have no business being in it. They don't even think of other people. people. That said a 'Sucker Punch' is called so because its always premeditated. (The victim being the sucker.) I hope he get scapegoated. Higher ups want to keep the reason behind the generator being Down; throw this trash to the media to destroy and crush him during the trial. Actual Karmic balance with being too cruel. I assume the mall owners will get theirs just more quietly.

2023-01-01 19:44:10 +0000 UTCOkay, about her teacher ... the bullying got so bad she went to her teacher about it (which can't have been easy, especially for someone like her), and he not only didn't help her, but went around and put the blame on Mai herself, suggesting she should "try harder to get along"? What the heck? And one more thing to remember: We know Lily told him about the bullying, too, and he DENIED such a thing was happening because "he would've noticed it"?? This guy was told one of his own students was being bullied, by two different sources, and he still behaved like this? How was this guy ever cleared to teach??

He was talking about not being qualified to go into higher level zones unescorted, which implies he's part of some sort of training program... I ask because she seems desperate for friends and might think approaching a new Dark would be a good idea, and because he seems really easy to drag into things. NOT just because I ship them and want them to have more screentime.

2022-12-30 21:47:13 +0000 UTCHold up, people who survive a brutal usurpation frequently start only coming to school half the time, on a consistent schedule, and nobody questions it? I suppose there would be plenty of very public counterexamples who get in for mundane scholarships and such that you can point at to shut up the conspiracy theorists, but it still makes me wonder if the Academy has some sort of large-scale perception filter on it. Having admission be limited to the most brilliant and the most unfortunate at the same time with nothing in the middle seems like a recipie for a caste system. Unless the elitist types have all figured out that their apparent 'lessers' have a significant probability of secret magic powers, so they make a point of being nice to people for strategic purposes? I think that last question is one that you can't get a real answer to without a good therapist present and a week to work on it. Somebody who's been conditioned for years to only do what they *need* to isn't gonna be able to articulate what they *want*, not for a question this big and important and permanant. Honestly I think that the deciding factor, with where Mai is right now, would be Selene. The Familiar is clearly a sophont, who was created for the express function of accompanying you and assisting with MG stuff. Denying her purpose, when she hasn't expressed any interest in any other life, seems like a cruelty. Even if it might be a necessary one, and other Familiars have gone on to fulfilling lives as teachers and such after the deaths of their wards.

So my money would be on the brother being at least negligent towards her and the Father being the main abuser.

Though I suppose it could be the brother. Ether way I sure as hell hope someone resolves that issue post-haste. Selene at least should find out quickly, though whether she has enough initiative and authority to actually do something about it is in question. It seems like Everglade and Naiad know something is up, but whether they're coming to the correct conclusions or not I don't know.

Regardless of if he somehow dodges the bullet when it comes to serving jail time, there is no way a man convicted of a crime that put one of his students in mortal danger and resulted in her severe injury would be able to hold onto his job after the absolute mountain of negative press this has brought down on him and the school. I hope they throw the book at him when it comes to his sentence, but even if he manages to worm his way out of the worst of the legal repercussions there is some catharsis in at least knowing he probably won't ever teach again. Almost causing a student's death out of cowardice and incompetence and then having it become a media sensation is not a good look on one's resume.

A lot of people when thrown in the face of death will accept things they don't actually want if it means they can live. And while I dont believe Mai is that case atpeast completely I think Ever is just trying to make sure that Mai actually wants this before its too late for her to go back if it was a spur of the moment adrenaline decision.

Error might contact Mai later and tell her, but it's not exactly the kind of information you drop like that "oh yeah I found the video where your classmates bully and abuse you, don't ya worry though I deleted it" especially when the person is so obviously on edge about her privacy and seems to be dealing with difficult issues.

2022-12-29 18:52:50 +0000 UTCI really loved these last few chapters, I had been afraid that the story would lose its impact after the first book since it was so wonderfully done and so emotionally charged. But the second book shows promises, Mai is still a intriguing character and the plot thickened enough to keep all of my attention. Also, I'm very happy that we will get to see two kinds of academy life! One where Mai is surrounded by normals who knew her beforehand, even bullied her, but her classmates now know about how she saved a child and fought an Anathema on her own. Seeing how her situation will change, even if we only had some tidbits about her school life before these events, will certainly be interesting. Things are most likely going to get better on this side, and Mai may finally get new friends besides Lily. The second academy, while more interesting for its actual magical combat classes and training (a future Tournament Arc, anyone? ), might be the one that will take a turn for the worse since Mai could be shunned for her Dark origin. Mai might be bullied once again if the other Magical Guardians in training (and her professors) know about the unfavorable rumors surrounding Dark MGs and act upon these wrongly. Adding to that her weapons of choice, that do not follow the glamorous fantasy vibes of most MGs and have a sense of finality/danger to them, and it's likely that she will at the very least be feared by her classmates. Thank you so much for writing and sharing this story with us. My only complaint about reading on Patreon is that I absolutely can't stand light mode so reading your Google doc files is painful for my dark-attuned eyes. Would you mind sharing a doc file that is dark-theme friendly, please? Best wishes for the new year, and happy holidays.

And it was for explicitly that reason, because most darks wouldn't want some strangers to barge into their life and 'fix' their issues.

We need to wait at minimum until her first transformation where she will feel her superhumanity and probably for some emergency Selene therapy. Remember that for her it's all been one chaotic mass of a battle and now she just woke up and is still disoriented and confused. She hasn't processed anything.

A single seed of it is fine, just enough to let us hope that things will get better in the future, that there is room for growth. If it didn't mean you'd be writing less of the actual main story, I'd really like to read an interlude about that :D And I hope we'll see Brian again sometime. Maybe with his parents although that might get awkward (Mai not being able to accept any compliments/gratitude from them). And I'm really excited about academy/school. Especially because it's not just gonna be a dedicated school arc but just the environment large parts of the near story will play in on and off.

That particular brand of abysmal self-esteem that makes choosing to be a hero so *easy* is. Not exactly a *good* thing outside of it. The girls got incredibly bad social anxiety, she’s a bundle of people-related traumas, of course she’s not going to be great with stuff outside of a crisis situation she can do her best to sacrifice herself in. TL;DR? Talking hard, suicidal bravery in the face of death easy.

You can't take a girl who was strong enough to accept death, to choose to sacrifice everything, and then have her be this much of a wimp.
