Patreon Preview - p-Toluenesulfonic acid

Finally after two months another video for your consideration. Let me know if you want any changes or additions.

Should i include an explanation for why the sulfonate group goes to the para-position of the toluene molecule? I felt that would be too much high level theory for a general youtube audience. (Heck, half of university chemists don't get it either)

Anyway, i hope to have a couple more videos ready this month to partially make up for the lack of videos this year. I want to get ammonia production next, and maybe nitric acid.

5:11 since you used an excess of toluene, I suspect you may have formed some di(p-tolyl)sulfone. Also, at 6:22, how about simply using a thermometer to measure the boiling point? Surely it must go up as the water content diminishes? And yeah, I too approve of getting an explanation regarding the para preference of this reaction. It's an interesting bit of organic chemistry.

You mentioned that using straight h2so4 in reactions can cause side products. Why/how does this product avoid oxidation?
