Other fun facts and uses of KMnO4: it was used once as an artificial tanning agent - on contact with skin it decomposes and causes a thin layer of MnO2 to deposit on top of the skin which gives a "tanned" appearance. Only lasts through 2-3 washes though. It's touted to be useful for sanitizing drinking water in the wild by survivalists - and while it does have some antibacterial properties, its bactericidal spectrum is incomplete and doesn't complete the job by itself. For complete effect it needs to be combined with other sanitizers such as a chlorine/hypochlorite generator. Also, in very small concentrations (0.1% or less) it acts as a stabilizer of hypochlorite delaying its spontaneous decomposition. It is used as such in the formula of a well known disinfectant, Dakins' solution (1.5% NaClO, 1% boric acid, 0.1% KMnO4) where it prolongs its shelf life.

2019-04-22 22:00:27 +0000 UTCThis combination (KMnO4+glycerol) is touted as a safe way to start thermite. In my experience it's very much a hit/miss. Often the KMnO4+glycerol catches fire but the thermite doesn't ignite. At least that's the anecdotal evidence I got based of a few dozen attempts.
