A primary alcohol with some bulk 2 carbons away like neodecanol or neopentanol might be fun to try the steric hindrance hypothesis with. Or else you could try fitting as many tert-butyls 2 carbons away as you can, like 41785-81-3 reduced to an alcohol.

[Cracking coal] Do you know some I read about the process? I know it is very old technology, but any pointers would help. Thank you for your time and great channel.

I still want to get into fuel chemistry eventually. Just one of the issues is safely handling flammable gases at high temperatures. The danger of course is an explosion. i'm still looking into it.

interesting, i looked into argan oil and the composition is mostly fatty acids. So it likely won't work for this purpose. But good thought.

Have you looked into Argan oil? I have a bottle of it I use for making hand soap. I'm not sure if it's a tertiary alcohol composition like Tea Tree oil, but it might be worth looking into. I don't remember the cost, but it's similar to Tea Tree Oil price wise.

BTW, what's on the docket for future research? Some of us asked for the German process of cracking coal into octane...?

Sean Walton

Forgive me... When I first started this, I thought "oh, no, not again." But the further research shown is top notch. I look forward to learning your next findings.

Nice, it's coming together very nicely. Watching this come together has been very informative. You get the feel for what decent experimental methodology looks like, sort of like the difference between reading about how some machine works, and actually seeing someone build and operate one. (Random thought: Y'know, I keep wondering if pinacol would work as a catalyst. It's easily synthesized from acetone, and might be able to be made in-situ just by adding acetone prior to the 'jumpstart' step. (Even if not, menthol is a heck of a nice, easily available catalyst. ) )
