Lab notes - Purified Tea Tree Oil Experiments for Making Sodium

Would Urushibara Nickel work?

Looking forward to the hydrogenation reaction. I managed to get some palladium on carbon for cheap if you want I can send you a bottle.

It isn't consumed by the sodium production reaction, it probably just decomposes in the presence of side products at elevated temperatures.

Would vacuum distillation allow you to use a full column and get better separation?

Zach Heilman

This is awesome, keep turning the crank - we appreciate it. A nit: Are you still counting the alcohol as a catalyst if it is indeed consumed?

Jeff Evarts

i actually did try it, but it didn't seem to work. Granted, i didn't try very hard, i figure if i need to put in MORE effort than distilling tea tree oil then it's not worth it. (as that effort is better spent just with tea tree oil.)

requires far too high a temperature. So i probably won't attempt it.

Would hydrating rather than hydrogenating be easier? It would give a dual tertiary alcohol which might make the precipitation problem worse though.

I was wondering if there is a way of recovering the magnesium oxide and turning it back to magnesium metal?
