I am currently colouring Ike and Skrimir. I use a smooth shading technique to receive more volume in the skin and a softer more gentle look in general. Smooth shading with blending takes longer then cel-shading, but I think the result is worth the time.
Here is a short summary of both techniques:
Cel-shading uses two or three colours. One for the shadows, the other one for the lighter parts. A third one can be used to add extra light.
Examples: The Cid Garlond drawing or my Uncharted Comic pages.
Smooth-shading uses a lot of colours from darker to lighter tones. Skrimirs skin is a good example how the light is reflected on his sweaty skin.
Examples: Jesse, Zabaniya, Connor and Jaal.
Some works look better with cel-shading or it is more common, like in comics.
I like both styles and I love to improve my smooth shading skills.
