I think the only thing that is canon in all vampire stories is that they are dead (or undead) and drink blood. There are many ways to become a vampire, getting drained by one and drink his blood is just the most mainstream one, probably due to Buffy and Hollywood in general.

2021-12-01 19:50:59 +0000 UTCI don’t know of any vampire canon that says you have to be drained before you can become a vampire. Vampire diaries & the originals had big storylines where vamp blood had been used to heal then the person accidentally dies and gets turned. Pretty sure it was the same of Buffy & Angel. Only vamp show I’ve never watched is True Blood, so maybe that’s where you got that from?
