You are totally right. It felt like a longer episode of TOS. I had missed them so much, this movie made me realize how much!

On the plus side,I love the reintroduction of the original characters (including Janice Rand,from Series 1 - now promoted to Transporter Chief). The character of Will Decker is well written (notice how he goes from addressing Kirk as 'Admiral', but ends up by calling him 'Jim'.) The plot (by Gene Roddeberry) is fine; but is not dissimilar to the TOS episode 'The Changeling'. Swap V'ger for Nomad and you have essentially the same story. Where this movie falters,imo, is the pacing. Those special effects look great (even today); but boy,they go on forever. It really feels as though everyone got carried away by the films huge budget, and just wanted to turn it into an epic showcase of what was visually possible to achieve. On the whole,though, it works well. It feels very much like a TOS episode,expanded and greatly enlarged. Really looking forward to your reaction to the next movie. Brace yourself! :D
