What you said at the end if wrong though. On LOST they were in an extreme rush to just kickstart the show and after season 1 they sat down and came up with a game plan/endgame for the show. - On The Leftovers it was different. Season 1 was just an adaptation of the book. It could have ended there. That's literally where the book/original story ended. They didn't make plans for more seasons at the time. They just focused on that one season. After that they had more ideas they wanted to explore and HBO gave them the opportunity to tell more stories. But season 2 was written like season 1 as that it could have been the final season. Then the ratings were really bad, but HBO loved the show and so they gave them 8 more episodes. But none of that was planned.
