As the other guy said the toshiro flashback is canon. It’s from a bonus chapter and they put it in a filler episode of all places a. Not the first time they did it. You can see in these episodes the fight choreography animation on average is better than the canon episodes around this time. That’s pretty consistent for this arc and the next filler arc. Still not sure why they animated filler better than canon but whatever. The animation only gets better too. I read they have a saying in Japan. “Women are like Christmas cake. Not good after the 25th.” It’s pretty terrible. Hopefully it’s not something that’s widely believed today. Obviously the rangiku and Haineko scene was trying to tackle that issue but if it wasn’t there in the first place we wouldn’t have had to put up with it for 30 minutes in this arc.
