The actual title of this video will probably be something like "Six Months Later: What Palworld can teach us about Pokemon". The Cities Skylines video that I made with a similar title did very well, and obviously the video isn't a "first look at new game" kind of deal, we are in fact, about five months into release.
Moving further from the hayday of the JamesBlack channel doing videos that are nominally reviews for your wallet's sake, this video was mostly an opportunity to vent my frustrations with Pokemon as a franchise. I haven't very actively kept up with Pokemon, as I explain in the video: it's a franchise that I've somewhat aged out of, but Pokemon could do a whole lot to keep my attention that they just aren't doing. Aside from being "Pokemon with Guns", Palworld is doing a lot of stuff that Pokemon refuses to. Until Nintendo decides to actually innovate with Pokemon, this video will remain relevant as an example of indie studios running where larger ones fear to tread.
This video is also an example of new stuff coming up while I'm editing, forcing the project to get longer and longer. I swear, I thought this could be a quick fire-and-forget video, but I realized very early on that I would have to be -very- specific when I was talking about Pokemon, the story, the mechanics, the animation, particularly when I was going to be critical of the franchise. I swear, I remember seeing Rapidash, somewhere in Sword and Shield, doing this animation where it simply bounced up and down and wiggled, the model not moving at all, one of the laziest things I remember seeing in a Nintendo game. When it came time to finally find this animation, I could not, and no amount of Google-fu was availing me. I eventually had to give up, and re-script and re-record. I have about an hour every morning to work on Youtube stuff, and so you can see where things like this extend the project out for as long as it has. I'm almost glad that Tarkov had a big scandal that I could cover really quickly to be able to put SOMETHING up in the mean-time. They should have done that a month earlier, it would really have worked for my upload schedule.
"Schedule".
Also, I would love some feedback on the "thanks to" section at the end of the video. I wanted to give more of a personal thanks to my Patrons, rather than just names up in text. Reading people's names out felt far more appropriate. I also wanted to include a small personalized message for each person, but I thought that there were some people I couldn't do that for, and it would be kind of crummy for some people to get personally shouted-out, and some wouldn't. So, fun idea, but sort of unfair, and I hate when people play favorites.
I hope you guys all enjoy the video, you're getting access to it early over the weekend, I think I'll schedule the premiere for Monday. I've noticed that videos released during the weekend get less traction overall, so a Monday late afternoon release might get better views. Gotta play the game where you can, right? See you all then.
