I believe he left the island in the Season 2 finale, not Season 3 epi 1.
Per Lostpedia
Season 2 Episode 23-24 was days 65-67, presumably since it was the end of the episode it was day 67
Season 4 Episode 8 was days 96-97
So from leaving the island to meeting with Sayid/Desmond on the freighter was about 1 month

I remember the official 'consensus' back in the day was that AtS wasn't a flashback per se, as it didn't start or end with the flashback'd character in present time. Potato, potato.

That makes Ben's character so wonderful. At this point we do not know his true motivations, we do not know if what he does is because he is actually a bad person, an unshakable faith on the island or "jacob", he tries to protect the island from strangers etc etc, we do not know anything.

A little bit of trivia here, I believe this episode wins the award for longest single running flashback scene of the whole series. I continues to be a joy watching you react to this. Really really looking forward to the next episode, as it's my personal favorite episode of the whole series since it features my personal favorite character.

I remember all the debates we had when the show was first airing about who put the plane at the bottom of the ocean. The captain of the freighter, who is controlled by Widmore, says Ben did it. Ben says Widmore did it. Each has some kind of proof, the captain has the black box and Tom has the paperwork. We debated this for months back when the show was first airing.

Paraphrasing Mike - All Ben does is lie, he's bad, I thought he was good all of season 2 but he's bad!
also paraphrasing Mike - Ben told me Widmore was coming to exploit the island so it makes total sense that Widmore planted the plane at the bottom of the ocean and wants to kill everyone
Can it be both? Can it be neither?

We can presume that Tom's trip was after Ben's operation and before Locke destroyed the submarine. It seems to be a short time but it works.
Great reaction Mike.

Does anyone know how long was Michael off the Island? I Left on the 1st episode of season 3 and on the 17th Naomi crashes into the Island... So... storywise it would have been, what? two weeks?
