And if we are talking about a fir tree, also known in some traditions as the tree of the dead, then it is altogether the most alive of all the living. Especially on New Year's Eve.
All because malicious spirits live in its dense branches, which can send blizzards, frosts and other misfortunes. To protect themselves from their anger, people appease these trees with gifts and special rituals.
Such brightly decorated fir trees on New Year's Eve serve as a kind of beacons for Ded Moroz (see also Karachun) because special gifts are prepared for him under them.
