I think it was brought up in some other show that anyone who goes to the academy learns basics of piloting. Keiko was Star Fleet… I’d imagine that the key Bajoran personnel on the station would also be trained to pilot the runabouts just in case.

Doni Marie Sanchez

"Quark is difficult to ignore." At the beginning of the year we trapped a mama cat, her three kittens, and a male we think is the dad. (They are all spayed and nuetered now.) One of the kittens is very colorful and meows a lot. I wanted to name her Quark, but she turned out to be a girl, so I named her Majel. She is the first cat to join me in bed each night. She meows loudly until I pet her. She is beautiful and difficult to ignore. Someday I will get my Quark cat.

Ratings Robbie: 8.9. The episode feels to Robbie like a "big shift in the whole series." "There are a few flaws" in the episode, he says, but after the discussion he raised his rating. Armin: 8.5. "It's a great lead-in to the perils of the Dominion." The episode, says Armin, demonstrates the Dominion's "long-term planning capabilities and military might." Armin also says he liked seeing an Enterprise-class Federation starship destroyed. Armin went on to say DS9 S2E26 is really two episodes in one: a camping trip comedic caper at first, and then it "morphs" into a story that lays the foundations for DS9 seasons 3-7. Armin adds he liked that Quark was allowed to point out "Federation hyposlcrist and overbearing superiority." Garrett: 8. He doesn't elaborate on why his rating is almost a full point lower than Robbie's, but expressed surprise at Robbie's 8.9. Patreon patrons/fans: 8.3. Garrett and Armin came about equally close. Garrett is back to being in line with the fans' scores. 1:49:30 -- 1:51:35

Yule Tide

Yes in other circumstances he might have a point but the Federation didn't even originally know they might have been in Dominion territory plus there's no evidence that territory incudes the entire Gamma Quadrant. Also It's not like the Dominion were saying this as a diplomatic point, they've just wiped out many ships and a Bajoran colony without any warning. Suggesting Starfleet are the problem in that context is a bit extreme.

Andrew McKinley

So once again, this is a metaphor for us with people who are different, the other…possibly immigrants, maybe?

sgtb99

I wonder if the Dominion ever explored the Delta Quadrant?

Robert Allen Stiffler

Oh man i’m so excited about the Delta Flyers getting into Season 3 of DS9!!!! The great episodes are going to start flying in.

BallparkDude

It might be the most important but it also found to be the most boring for me. I liked it enough, and enjoy this podcast, but DS9 is not on the same level as STTNG or others.

Svpike

But just like the Federation doesn't control all of the alpha quadrant and others are able to explore. I'm sure the Dominion doesn't control all the delta. they might think they do but I'm sure she's not thinking that it's actually true.

Svpike

I thought it was a good point. The Federation should respect other people’s borders.

Catherine Green

Agree 100%. I am more than tired of the attitude including his gleeful attitude about anything the Federation or Starfleet does wrong. I much prefer the episodes that have Terry.

ST Fan CB

So these shows are taped month or so ahead of time. I didn't know that. That football game Robert talked about was mid September.

Svpike

I like Armin and he brings things up worthy of discussion. But, his negative tsk, tsking of those subjects is annoying. Example, tsk, tsking Jadzia for saying to the JemHaddar that they won't get them to stop exploring the Gamma Quadrant. A subject worthy of discussion, but to actively take the side of the crushing Dominion is weird. Especially since he tsk, tsked the Bajorans for not letting the Skrreeans settle on their planet. All subjects worthy of discussion, but the negativity is wearing.

Sheryl Franklin

Ha! Yes, once they realized the saucer separation sequence wasn’t practical, they pretty much had to ignore the sheer amount of danger civilians were constantly in on Galaxy-class ships.

Andrew Cano

It was a real piece of luck that for the first time ever, the Captain decided to make his non-essential personnel get off a Galaxy-Class starship before it did something dangerous!

Catherine Green

Also, I’m pretty sure the mechanic who fixes my car knows how to drive it…

Catherine Green

When Armin was telling the stunt double story I was wondering if Robbie would tell the tale of his butt catching on fire. Was not disappointed. Happy birthday to Armin! Hope you have the best birthday ever!

Elisabeth Westner

The Odyssey bridge wasn't the TNG set. It was a redress of the Battle Bridge set/TOS movie bridge set.

Jeff Kloosterman

How were the Jem Hadars weapons so different?

Robert Allen Stiffler

I will NEVER forget my reaction to the destruction of the Odyssey when I first watched this episode at 15 years old. I just knew the Dominion would be DS9’s Borg and was so excited to see where things would go.

Andrew Cano

Don’t forget he was a tactical officer on the Rutledge before that. And Geordi, the full-time S1 Enterprise pilot, rose to Chief Engineer of Starfleet’s flag ship by S2. That is great cross-training!!!

Andrew Cano

They say that O’Brien is an engineer, not a pilot. But when we first see O’Brien in the pilot of TNG, he’s flying the Enterprise!

Jeff Kloosterman
