Love Terry's video reactions, her poem, AND her episode theme! ❤️

This is exactly! Which then means his typical circadian rhythm would be 24 hours like a human’s & not 26 like how many hours are in a Bajoran day

Becky Messer

DS9 has a 26 hour day. That’s why everything is in multiples of 13/26 hours ("I want that report within 52 hours" etc.). I agree with the earlier post, I always understood Odo’s cycle as needing to regenerate once every 16 hours, but if he did regenerate for 16 hours he’d still have 10 hours left of each day :)

Matt Edmonds

I believe the rules around Odo's regeneration is that he must regenerate at a minimum once every 16 hours, however I do not believe that the time spent in regeneration is ever stated. There is a later episode when Odo has quarters where Quark who's quarters are below him complains about Odo oozing about all night and keeping him awake so the assumption to me is a regeneration cycle is roughly 8 hours.

Jeremy Meyer

I love Terry's video reactions ❤️ she is so emotive and invested!

Vanessa Smith

Rewatching the episode right now and yes, O'Brien had a tricorder in his hand, you could hear it was scanning and he was looking right at it when he said the lifeform was dead.

MG

I love the line “we can talk about things that matter to you”. That’s something to takeaway. To be able to sit down with a friend and say I want to talk about things that matter to you.

Scott Fuller

I don’t understand why it is so hard to believe that the humanoid face and all its intricacies is harder than an inanimate thing like hair.

Constance

I like that Odo is private, the emotion in this episode would have been cheapened if he was the kind of person that confided in anyone. His reservation and the struggle was the brilliance. He was saying all he thought he should have to say to get to the end result he wanted from someone who respected and listened to him. Shouldn’t have to emote around people that truly trust you.

Constance

Thanks for the birthday wishes!

My dad was at my house one day and asked why I had a sledge hammer. I answered that because I had sledges that needed to be hammered. He just shook his head and walked away. I knew at that point that my dad jokes had surpassed his and that from now on I was the master.

Same!

Wow, I totally forgot that he was the first adult Alexander! His scenes with Ethan Phillips in the VGR episode Jetrel have been burned into my memory since I was 9 years old. He's an evocative actor, it's no wonder Star Trek kept bringing him back

SisyphusLifts

I think I am getting really good therapy and adulting insights from this podcast. I had to use a sledgehammer to be seen.

Robby - I’m going to respectfully disagree with what you said in the moral recap. It’s true… we are responsible for what we say and what we do. It’s the feelings I disagree with. Years ago, my wife and I went to a marriage counselor who told us that feelings are just feelings. They’re out there, and they’re neither right nor wrong. However, I’m reminded of something John Maxwell said. He said, “ thoughts, become feelings, feelings, become words, words become actions, actions becomes habit, habits, become character. Everything starts with your thoughts.” Ultimately, we can’t control our feelings really. But the best way to keep them in check is to control our thoughts. It all starts there.

Greg Byrne

Aww, Terry made me cry when she started tearing up about Rene!

I always love when other people post about guest actors who have appeared in other incarnations on Star Trek. I wish we got this information from the introduction of the guest stars and all their Star Trek connections. I will probably get disagreed with, but I feel that up this point in the series, the stories consist largely of the same formula. Bring on a guest star that the story is built around and then have the regular cast dance around in supporting roles in an A minus or B story capacity. In the 2nd Season the stories have been about Li Nalas, Jarro, Winn, Verad, Garak, Melora, Pel, Fenna, the Skrreeans, Martis and now Dr. Mora. Lets tell some stories about our regular cast so we can get to finally know them. Mid 2nd season better late than never for major character development. There IS character development in the majority of these episodes but only as a side show to the story around the guest star. "Kidnapped / stole the dirt". Taking soil samples on every planet is standard procedure in every planet survey mission. I guess the Apollo mission crews "kidnapped / stole" the moon rocks. Come on man. What is RF energy? Radio Frequency energy. All 4 of the away team members are beamed in and out at the same time even though in a previous episode O'Brien says that they can only beam two at a time. They must have upgraded the runabout transporters since then. Why does Dr. Mora ask if the computer has had any progress in "decoding the encryptions"? That makes no sense. The markings on the pillar are obviously some form of alien language but why is he calling them encryptions? Who said the alien language was encrypted? Messages are encrypted to keep enemies from reading them. Why not ask if the computer has had any progress in figuring out the alien language? That would make more sense. Dr. Mora says "Dear God, what have I done?" God? I thought Bajorans believed in the Prophets and not in one god. If they knew the "mert" was a sentient life, then of course removing it would be wrong. But even if they did, once again, this has NOTHING to do with the prime directive. Memory Alpha states that Odo was skilled enough at shapeshifting to replicate working technology including the combadge. Not sure how that works but there you go. This episode contains a horrible continuity error regarding Odo's rest period. In previous episodes and ones after this, it is established that Odo has to return to liquid state every 16 hours. This means that he can only stay solid for 16 hours after which, he must regenerate in liquid form for a few hours, the amount of which was never stated. In this episode, even though they get the 16 hours part correct, the scrip has them incorrectly state that he must sleep for 16 hours. SMH.

I so enjoyed this review! I love Terry’s reaction videos. I relate so well. And Robbie taking umbrage to them just taking a potential sacred relic off h the e planet - as well as a sentient bit of slime — spot on. Odo’s character development is fantastic. And the actor playing Dr Mora really hit the right notes. A great episode and podcast.

SnazzyO

When they beamed the totem/relic/ruin off the planet my first thought was whaaaat? How is that not violating some kind of directive? LOL

"The Alternate" was one of the scariest (yet one of the most well-directed) Star Trek episodes ever, there was a great sense of Hitchcock-esque tension and Odo's monster transformation was absolutely terrifying. Odo's transformation somewhat reminded me of Professor Lupin's werewolf transformation in "Harry Potter", how a likable character suddenly transforms into a horrifying monster and yet, you still feel sorry for this character. James Sloyan (Dr. Mora) appeared in "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "The Defector" as the loyalty-torn Romulan Admiral Jarok. He also appeared in "Murder She Wrote", as a police detective who assisted Jessica Fletcher (Angela Lansbury). Such a wonderful actor with a very distinctive voice! "The Alternate" was a great Odo-centric episode!

Nicole Brettell

James Sloyan played 2 different characters on Next Generation. A Romulan in the episode The Defector and season 7 Episode Firstborn as Worf's son Alexander who visits from the future.

Michael Brooks

I'm only up to the poetry but I just have to say that you all have become so good at writing these, it's crazy. I'm constantly entertained and impressed by everyone's poetry and love learning from armin's entomology breakdowns.

Wrestling With Gaming

I had almost forgotten about this episode until I rewatched it this week. Definitely appreciated it more this time around. I especially like how the whole main cast was involved.
