The dresses, I thought, was an interesting juxtaposition where at the end theyre sent off to a world (new dress) that was given to them by Bajor (Kira).

I'm assuming the actress was allergic to latex in her makeup. We had a girl in our Scout troop who was allergic to latex so we always had latex free gloves in our first aid kits. Also, the fifth act storyline didn't bother me. In this whole episode, there is a struggle with communication that keeps the groups from fully understanding each other. This is the big theme seen throughout the episode with the universal translator, the ugly dress, social customs, the disagreement about sharing the planet, and finally, the communications on the ship not working and the Bajorans not waiting for confirmation of a change of orders. With regards to social customs, they never spend enough time to have an understanding of cultural differences. I have my degree in child development. Since we get all sorts of kids in our programs, one of the things they train us on is how things can be rude in one culture, but a sign of respect in another. Eye contact is a good example. So is talking distance. In some cultures close talking is a sign of respect. In others, a sign of intimidation. It relates in this show with the way they regard gender roles. It is also possible the food falls into this same category, Rom finding it disgusting, but perhaps in Screyan culture, it is disgusting to waste food. The refugee debate is also not fully communicated. The Screyans didn't fully understand how dire the famine is on Bajor. They were sure they could farm anything, but some land is not viable to grow anything (my dad is a real farmer). The Screyans were sure they could farm it sight unseen simply because the location of Bajor fulfilled their prophecy. Their arrogance and faith kept them from really understanding Bajor's perspective of the situation. For me, the whole episode is about how it takes a lot of communication to come to a full understanding between two different people or groups.

There is some discussion of my reaction to this episode and its apparent ethnic-political-historical themes at this review: https://them0vieblog.com/2013/09/29/star-trek-deep-space-nine-sanctuary-review/ (That guy did long reviews of every episode of DS9 and other series.) Also see the comment there by bainespal.

There are a variety of apparent Jewish themes in this episode related to immigration, refugees, and the Israel-vs-Palestinians issue of today (some of the four commenting on this episode did seem to have this in mind but didn't want to say so directly). The refugee-aliens look and act very much like Ellis-Island immigrants from ca. 1890s or 1900s. They act in an exaggerated way playing to this stereotype; especially the most toreign-seeming ones to the U.S. population of that day, which would not exclusively be the EastEuropean Jews but would heavily be so.. Even hairstyles and clothing styles are drawn from this. And then the entire "looking to resettle in our true honeland": that's Zionism, Israel. People say the Bajorans on DS9, their narrative or stories are often based on Jews (to Cardassian "Nazis"). But in this episide they are the ones rejecting Jewish-stereoryped refugees looking for their Israel. So one reading there is a multi-way clash of Jewish stereotypes or themes. And that's not even to get into the Feregni (which we still haven't heard Mr Shimerman comment on, in full, on what human group he thinks the Feregni are parodies of, he has suggested Overseas Chinese or Jews, but he said he'd get around to discussing it later).

The world has been experiencing climate refugees for some time now. It will only get worse and humanity does not seem to be equipped to handle that. This 30 year episode quintessentially demonstrates the current attitudes in our world. Tragic. We need to learn to live and work together.

Love you Armin but the powers that be were intimidated by strong, smart, capable women. Unfortunately that still exists today.

ChrisB

Congratulations Kitty! Such a smart move on investing for the SAG pension!

ChrisB

That’s a good point. I think in situations like this it’s easy for the number of refugees to appear huge in people’s heads when if you look at the population side, they’re small. That’s very relevant for my country (UK) right now.

Catherine Green

Love Dax’s reaction to Julian‘s difficulty with the concept of a matriarchy. Once again, aligned with 20th century and unfortunately 21st Century Earth.

ChrisB

I’m gonna push back on the concept that 3 million people is a large number for a planet. Consider that there are currently over 8.3 million people in New York City alone. It just illustrates that Bajor is a mess and rightfully so after 50 years of occupation. It underscores the “nationalist”perspective and that’s what this episode is about keeping the other out.

ChrisB

Extremely relevant episode for 2024 on our planet Earth, UNFORTUNATELY. I have found that many shows in the 1990s showed us big red flags and we passed right through them and that’s why we are where we are right now at this moment in time.

ChrisB

Armin and Kitty, thank you so much for coming to Trek Long Island this year! It was fantastic to have you both there!❤️
