2025-03-13 22:49:42 +0000 UTCI'm late to the party but wanted to give a possible theme because the crew had a hard time coming up with a theme. One possible theme to me was awareness and compassion for those struggling with mental health challenges. I actually really loved this episode, probably because of the meaning I personally injected into the unexplained occurrences in this episode.

2024-09-29 19:26:47 +0000 UTCAs a widow, I view this episode very differently than I did when my husband was alive. The beginning scene that Sisko almost forgot the death anniversary sets the idea that he may be moving through grief enough to open up to someone else. The interactions with Fenna make sense to me. He’s dipping his toe into romantically connecting with her but the feelings of infatuation are so raw and vulnerable that he hasn’t felt since his wife that it’s easy to overlook red flags. It’s “ wow I didn’t think I’d ever feel this way again” and hope that there’s a future with someone else. I only see it this way because my perception has changed. I didn’t like this episode a lot when I viewed it the first time but I see Sisko’s courage and willingness to take a chance on feeling the pain of loss again.

2024-07-23 18:06:58 +0000 UTCThe in universe reason there are different uniforms between DS9 and TNG is the DS9 Uniform was rolled out to Station crews before Starships, the roll out would extend to Starships in Generations where you see both uniforms across the fleet. Which then goes into Voyager were that style is now fleet wide

2024-07-16 15:03:11 +0000 UTCAdel wasn’t suppose to change, she is not Phena, she will never be Phena. Phena was the flame before burnout of someone’s soul trying to escape herself.

2024-07-09 00:12:19 +0000 UTCThat was the point! Sisko was letting her know that her ultra ego (that she will never be) was exactly who she was as a gift to her - a white lie to make her feel good about herself even though it wasn’t true.

2024-07-09 00:10:42 +0000 UTCPhena’s connection to Adell is on a subconscious level, and that was told. If we needed everyone to explain everything, why act at all, just blindly read the script with all the unnecessary exposition.

2024-07-09 00:08:07 +0000 UTCEveryone that watches this show picks it to death. Just makes me sad. No full delighting in the moment, trying to fix something that is not broken is frustrating.

2024-07-08 22:38:45 +0000 UTCOver explaining would have ruined this series and this episode.
Constance
2024-07-08 22:37:43 +0000 UTCThe whole point was he wasn’t in love. He was curious, intrigued, but not in love. The point of starting with his wife was that he is a man, and he was longing. They did write the story Garrett mentioned, he was guilty and there was not need to over explain. Have to make grand assumptions - this show doesn’t spoon feed you. It allows you to infer and think.
Constance
2024-07-08 22:37:26 +0000 UTCGarrett is right. Kira was curious, not angry or annoyed. It was part of showing Sisko is growing on her.

2024-07-06 18:35:06 +0000 UTCI have a silly question, but since I’ve been a subscriber since early days, I’m just not sure. Are any of these videos freely available somewhere? Like the first part before they say “and now for our patreon subscribers”? I just have friends with limited funds who love DS9, and I’d love it if they could at least see part of these episodes. Thanks for any insight!

2024-07-06 16:50:38 +0000 UTCFrom the transcripts (searching a few of the obvious candidates for the word “love,” because I had a memory of Kes saying she loved Neelix but no idea whether it was TO Neelix), we’ve got Neelix telling Kes “when I fell in love with you” in Jetrel, Neelix calling Kes “the woman I love” in Elogium, Kes telling the Doctor “I love Neelix” in Partuition and telling Janeway the same in Tuvix, so pretty safe to assume they were saying it to one another. Tuvix also told Kes “I love you. (B’Elanna says she loves Tom in Day of Honor, though he never reciprocates onscreen - the closest he comes is in Gravity when Noss says (translated by the Doctor) he must love her, and he says “yeah,” and telling B’Elanna that “the only self that I want to be is the guy you’re in love with” in Drive; nothing in Lineage or Prophecy.) The Doctor tells Denara “because I love you” in Lifesigns, and Janeway and Mark use the term freely in reference to each other in Caretaker and her hallucination in Persistence of Vision.

2024-07-05 03:36:07 +0000 UTCI always enjoy the banter in the podcast. Thanks for sharing that. I agree that there was too many cooks in the soup. From a character perspective, I took that Sisko is finally starting to let his wife go and will show an interest in women from now on. Jake was supportive, and that matters. Good: Father/Son talk Bad: Sorry, the arrogant scientist just didn’t thrill me Ugly: Zero explanation for why the wife sought out Ben in the first place and had no knowledge at the end

2024-07-04 18:46:32 +0000 UTCI may have already commented that this is my least favourite episode of the whole of DS9. The wig there is nearly big enough to be out of TOS so perhaps they did have Kirk's chiffon ladies in mind here! I rather like the outfit - googlein tells me it was sold at one stage for not very much money, wonder who's got it now! It is actually pants not a dress as you might think.

2024-07-03 14:10:33 +0000 UTCGreat episode as always! Though I don't know if anyone else watches with the captions on and have noticed that they don't get the words quite right and sometimes it results in hilarious moments like Garrett seeming to call themselves "Shrek" actors instead of Star Trek actors and, my personal favorite, Robbie supposedly saying "rancid genomes" instead of raktajino lol 😆

2024-07-01 05:46:14 +0000 UTCRegarding rewatching Voyager: not sure if y’all know kw/remember this, but back when Battlestar Galactica was airing, Ron Moore would record himself talking and watching the show and would comment as the show was playing. So the viewer could watch along with him and get his feedback on the show. You guys should do that also. Just a thought…

2024-06-30 18:29:31 +0000 UTCI've always found this episode pretty meh (especially on a rewatch when you already know Fenna's secret) but this podcast really highlighted what a missed opportunity it was. Here we had a woman trapped in a painful marriage, filled with so much grief that she was literally projecting a version of herself who was free to experience real love and connection with someone else - and Sisko, grieving on the anniversary of his wife's death. If they'd had less focus on the mystery aspect and instead revealed the truth sooner than Act 5, then it could have been an episode about grief and allowing yourself to love - with the theme being about how this experience with Fenna AND Nidell allowed Ben to see that he was ready to open his heart again. Or something like that. It could have been a much better episode if the emotions had been more of the focus than the sci-fi mystery.

2024-06-28 00:17:01 +0000 UTCI appreciate the shortened intro. The little descriptors (enchanting science officer, your favorite helmsman, ect) were cute but the whole thing was kinda long. The new version works better.

2024-06-27 14:26:30 +0000 UTCYes, same here. I read it in 5th grade. Decided to read it again recently and it holds up pretty well. The story is simple but has a lot of charm, and the narration goes detail about actual wilderness survival techniques.

2024-06-26 23:17:17 +0000 UTCRe: Kira’s reaction to Sisko’s change of routine (tea vs usual Klingon coffee). I interpret Kira as -unsettled- by the change of routine and attribute this as another piece of her PTSD making itself known. I don’t think she was angry but I do think she was distressed in a way that comes out with an edge.

2024-06-25 23:58:06 +0000 UTCI think when it comes down to it, this could have been an excellent episode based on grief and guilt over simultaneously almost forgetting your wife's passing and becoming interested in another woman on the anniversary of her death. Throw in the conflict of that person being married too would complicate it even further (though that probably would hurt Sisko's character if he knew). That could have been a very deep story that would have resonated with many people who have suffered a loss like this and are stuck between their continuing grief and the need to move forward with their lives. Instead, the story was very cluttered with ideas that never panned out or were explained, which is sad because I can see such potential with this script. As you guys said, the teaser set up so much that was totally forgotten about.

2024-06-25 17:40:22 +0000 UTCI TOTALLY have to agree about the line readings by that actor on the Prometheus. I've always felt it was really bad acting but you guys gave me a different perspective on why that may happen sometimes. Thanks for that. Still bad though. :)

2024-06-24 22:44:39 +0000 UTCYeah I think the disconnect between her two halves is what really robs this episode of cohesion.

2024-06-24 22:12:38 +0000 UTCWere there "I love you"s exchanged between Neelix and Kes in the first few seasons of Voyager? That would be the only example I can think of.

2024-06-24 20:48:57 +0000 UTCI loved Salli Richardson-Whitfield on the TV show Eureka. When I see this episode I always think "oh, its the one with the ghost woman". This episode has always been just meh for me but after hearing the podcast I now see it as one of the worst episodes. The story makes no sense, there is no story arc development or anything pushing the series forward and no character development worth squat. Regarding the difference in uniforms. The practical answer is that they probably did not have enough of the new DS9 style uniforms to give every one on the ship so they just used the extra Next Gen uniforms. The in-story answer is that it always takes time to get the entire organization transitioned over to the new style of uniform. Upon returning from Iraq in 2004, I stood in a formation where the Soldiers from the same unit were wearing 3 different uniforms. The old style woodland pattern BDU, the desert pattern BDU and the new horrible ACU. Why are Dax and O'Brien messing around in engineering of another Starfleet Ship? Doesn't that ship have a Chief Engineer who would not like other people messing around with his engines? Odo says that other than King Blowhard, no one else has left the Prometheus. Must be a pretty shitty captain of that ship not to give his crew some shore leave on the station. Heck, Tom and Harry got to leave Voyager when it stopped there on the way to the Badlands. Interesting that Professor Bombastic uses proto-matter for his experiment. This is the same substance used by David Marcus in the Genesis device that ultimately caused the Genesis Planet to blow up. Saavik even notes that its "an unstable substance which every ethical scientist in the galaxy has denounced as dangerously unpredictable." I guess in the future they figured out how to use it.

2024-06-24 20:15:15 +0000 UTCLoved the posh accents at the beginning XD and Garrett's face when Terry complimented his impression is everything XD I'm so excited to see Terry's work with Sara Tomko too - that's going to be wonderful. Another fun podcast <3 You all make my Mondays :D

2024-06-24 19:47:12 +0000 UTCFirst episode of the Trilogy of Meh but I'm glad they still made an entertaining podcast out of it. Time for a break then two more weak episodes to get through before things get meatier again.

2024-06-24 19:06:02 +0000 UTCIn my mind, I always assumed that the TNG and DS9 crew wore different uniforms because they were different divisions in Starfleet-one being ship-based, the other Station-based. Our own modern millitary has different uniforms for different functions. Then of course came Voyager and threw my theory out of whack. Perhaps Voyager's crew had different uniforms because it the ship was still in space-dock at the opening of episode 1. Of course all if this is a lot of thinking behind the real-world answer that the producers wanted to reuse costumes to save money.

2024-06-24 17:12:30 +0000 UTCWhen they started talking about the guest star Richard Kiley, it sparked a memory I didn't know I had. He's the tour narrator mentioned by Hammond in Jurassic Park.

2024-06-24 15:02:40 +0000 UTCThis episode was one of my least favorites, though the idea of Fenna being a psychophotographic projection from Nidell's subconcious was very interesting. I just wished that Fenna's memories were intact and that Nidell would feel sad about the death of her husband and yet relieved that her "bondage" is over and that she can return to her homeworld to her family and friends. When Sisko said to Nidell that Fenna was "a lot like her", I think he meant that Fenna was like Nidell in not only the physical sense, but also in her subconcious desires to run and be free and to meet and fall in love with someone - a quiet, but thoughtful and brave man like Sisko.

2024-06-24 14:34:35 +0000 UTCDS9 really focused on the father-son relationship. Avery and Cirroc played the scene beautifully❤️

2024-06-24 12:31:17 +0000 UTCThis is my least favourite episode of DS9. It's a weak idea and the story makes no sense. It does nothing for any of the regular characters. Totally forgettable. I liked the red dress . Glad you found so much to discuss and thank you for another fine podcast.

2024-06-24 08:05:22 +0000 UTCAww. No, the writers NEVER had Tom Paris say "I love you" to B'Elanna (with the words, at least) - the closest he came was season five, when he, Tuvok, and the Doctor were stuck on that planet for 4-5 months with Lori Petty and *she* said "you must love her very much," and Tom replied, "yeah,” and his saying “the only self I want to be is the guy you’re in love with” when they were breaking up/eloping in Drive. Ridiculous. (From the writers, given they had B'Elanna's depression, a "I'm dying, here's my recorded message" chance from Tom (Once Upon a Time), a "proposal," a honeymoon shot in the Flyer, a pregnancy and going into labor, etc in which such a phrase should have come out naturally. It's actually pretty impressive how hard they worked *not* to have Tom say it. 🤦🏻♀️) (Trust me, the P/Ters went crazy with the "finally" but it not being anything B'Elanna even heard, and it's a pain point for them [reasonably so!] that he never said it back to B'Elanna. Up through and including their wedding and birth of their child. 🙄)

2024-06-24 05:35:09 +0000 UTCI must say…the poetry has become so fabulously refined since the early episodes! Wowza…I love it. It was so interesting to hear y’all talk about ayahuasca ceremonies as a retreat. We hear about the commoditization of Indigenous ceremonies in the USA all the time, but I’ve not actually encountered this as a casual discussion before. Interesting (she says with a Tpol eyebrow raise 😏). I totally agree…I remember watching this episode for the first time and it was one where I couldn’t see what was going on as the episode progressed until it was revealed. The single parent relationship with a child as a thread woven through the series is a powerful one. I loved it.

2024-06-24 04:40:36 +0000 UTCHas Jeri told "Bob" Redford about John de Lancie once getting his underwear as part of a costume? 😂 (Or that could be an HR conversation waiting to happen, since she's working with him!)
