I absolutely love Terry's poetry ❤️

2025-03-02 20:41:10 +0000 UTCI really dislike Ferengi episodes but not for the reason Armin said. I find them “visually unappealing”. They are just unattractive. But especially Zeck. His makeup is disgusting and the voice he does is SUPER annoying. I find his epps hard to watch. Then this epp had the aliens with the truthfully dumb looking make up.. Other than those aspects it was an awesome episode

2024-11-12 15:52:42 +0000 UTCQuark is very familiar with strong female Ferengi. I think it is part of what makes this episode great, we are consistently building on his character piece by piece.

2024-07-04 17:56:33 +0000 UTCDax called out that Pell was in love with Quark. Pell knew she was caught. It did not occur to Dax that Pell was a woman. It did not occur to Pell that homosexuality was an option. Pell thought Dax was calling out she was a female when she said Pell was in love with Quark. Did not think that was particularly ambiguous in the writing or the acting. Thought it was well done.

2024-07-04 17:53:21 +0000 UTCOk, I’ve been behind on these videos but I am also upset at that rating, it should have been higher!! Looks like I need to log on sooner & actually vote instead of just complaining 😅

2024-06-24 07:26:39 +0000 UTCWell, the ferengi episodes were some of my favorites!! But I didn’t get to vote on the rating at my rank. But seriously, truly, the Ferengi episodes were at the top of my favorites. I would give this one a 8.2 rating. It is doing what Star Trek does best.

2024-06-18 06:42:46 +0000 UTCI love how Armin likes to give credit to every actor and crew member involved. Class act!

2024-06-17 12:42:06 +0000 UTCAn amazing episode with a great metaphor. Helene Udy by the way is best known for her role in Dr Quinn, she played Myra Bing. I didn't make that connection myself unless I saw your small struggles to say her name and asked google ;).

2024-06-16 09:56:50 +0000 UTCFabulous episode- both the podcast and the ds9 episode. The episode with both Terry and Armin are the best. I know there are scheduled issues, but anything that can be done to maximize the number of episodes they are on together would be exceptionally amazing!!

2024-06-15 23:11:03 +0000 UTCI agree with you about the Kira/Nagus storyline. That's not cute, it's gross! I love you four, but did you even watch that part of the show??

2024-06-15 23:10:24 +0000 UTCI was shocked at the low rating for this episode as this is one of my favourites from season 2, so I was up there with Terry and Armin and Robbie! But then I've never understood the dislike for Ferengi episodes, they're some of my favourites! The reason DS9 is such a wonderful show is the way it balances serious and deep storytelling with lighthearted fun and comedy - and the Ferengi are an essential part of that. My only disappointment was that we don't see Pel again - given future storylines, we absolutely should have gotten her back. I also want to say how thrilled I am that we had both Terry and Armin for this episode, it was so fantastic hearing both of their perspectives about an episode they were such a big part of! I'm still so grateful they've chosen to be a part of this podcast and share their insights with us.

2024-06-15 15:10:01 +0000 UTCI totally agree. I like the Ferengi eps on DS9 (on TNG and Voyager, it was cringy because they had the main characters looking like idiots underestimating them and constantly coming out on the losing end, but that wasn't an issue on DS9, plot wise or in that the Ferengi *are* our main characters in those episodes!) and get so bored during Klingon episodes of TNG and DS9. My rating on this ep was bumped down to a 6.5 because of the Dosi's makeup ("makeup") and speech being very TOS to me. Terry said it in her reaction and I was like, "YES!" Except to me (in kindergarten when TNG started), feeling like TOS is not a good thing, and it took me out of the episode every scene they were in. 🤷🏻♀️ (I have a hard time going higher than 7.5 or 8.0 because, rightly or not, I know where a good chunk of future episodes are going to trend for me and I need some room for them in between these good episodes and few-and-far-between 10s.)

2024-06-14 21:56:40 +0000 UTCIMDb has this one rated higher compared to the previous episode. A great episode. I feel it is enjoyed. Anytime shows do not have more main characters fans tend to rate lower. Maybe on the surface folks think it's negative against women. But it's about the reflection on society and the thought it should bring. Really enjoyed this podcast episode with all 4 commenting. Happy summer all.

2024-06-14 07:55:03 +0000 UTCI've changed my tune a bit on this episode after watching the discussion here on the podcast. I don't remember ever being impressed by it before, but I think they were right in highlighting the emotional/romantic journey we see here for the two main characters of Pel and Quark. It's a real shame we didn't see Pel again in the series. I'd give it a 8/10 (compared to something closer to a 5, which I might have given it before.)

2024-06-12 13:20:06 +0000 UTCPlease, everyone needs to vote Ferengi episodes at least 2 points higher than they normally would in future - I can't bear to see Armin's poor hurt face anymore :'( But on a serious note this actually was also one of my favourite episodes so far for all the reasons mentioned.

2024-06-12 11:59:05 +0000 UTCI ADORE Ferengi episodes. Yes, they can get silly and over the top at times but they're also some of the most heartfelt episodes that directly comment on some important societal issues. And what's more star trek than that? And when they're not doing that theyre often good, light-hearted fun.

2024-06-12 04:21:41 +0000 UTCGlad Armin pointed out the religious aspect of Zek shaming Pel.

2024-06-12 04:21:01 +0000 UTCUnpopular opinion. I found the Ferengi focused episodes much more entertaining than any Klingon stories on DS9. They just ran that Klingon stuff into the ground. That’s probably why I found any world exploration that wasn’t Klingon waaaaay more interesting. The Vulcan and Andorian stories on Enterprise are great examples. Even the Klingon stories on the first season of Discovery were more interesting than 90% of any TNG era Klingon stories - in my unpopular opinion. I give this episode a 8.0

2024-06-11 16:10:23 +0000 UTCRe-rewatch. I so enjoyed this podcast that I went back to rewatch again to spot all the nuances. I am so glad Armin/Ira gave us more complex Ferengi. I agree that Sisko shows disrespect to Ferengi, I disagree it that he had no role in what happens at Quarks. Deep Space 9 is a Federation Space Station. If a Head of State (Zek) is holding a business ‘conference’ on his Station (that’s how Sisko characterized it), then the Federation’s reputation is at risk. It’s also why met the Dosi at the air lock. So, Sisko was treating this as a diplomatic event. In which case a ‘gift’ for Bajor is not a bribe but an exchange of goodwill gestures. YMMV

2024-06-11 11:25:06 +0000 UTCThank you Armin for your lesson! After all, Ginger Rogers had to do everything just as well as Fred Astair did backwards and in high heels.

2024-06-11 11:05:53 +0000 UTCThere is something somewhat refreshing about these early DS9 episodes, I have to admit. I love seasons 4-7, obviously, but these early episodes are very fun on rewatch. Maybe it's my modern fatigue with heavily serialized storytelling?

2024-06-11 05:32:42 +0000 UTCThe prime directive has absolutely nothing to do with what Armin is talking about. It continues to amaze me after all these years that people have no idea what the Prime Directive actually is. Here is a direct quote from Memory Alpha that summarizes the Prime Directive: "No interference with the social development of said planet". Its says social development not the laws or the way they conduct business. I get that Armin desperately trying to recon the race he played a member of but he is going way to far. Maybe Sisko had a look of disgust on his face because every time the Nagus shows up, he brings trouble with him and Sisko is sick and tired of the Nagus disrupting his station. Sisko also just literally watched the Grand Nagus try to cheat someone right in front of him and he is not supposed to react? Look at what Quark has done so far on the station: responsible for one death, take over of the station, a stolen symbiont with Dax nearly killed and Melora shot and nearly killed. Quark should be thrown out of the airlock. I guess every series needs its Gilligan or Dr. Smith. Give me a break. Additionally, this race from the Gamma Quadrant are one of only a handful that have come through the wormhole. How Quark treats this race could have ramifications throughout both quadrants. So yes, the Federation does have skin in this game and should make sure Quark is not trying to cheat them. Look at what happened the last time there was a group from the Gamma Quadrant on the station, maybe this time Sisko and company will not be so lucky and come out of the game alive. So I guess everyone on planet earth should look the other way about certain countries and the barbaric way they treat women and certain ethnic groups because they are "living their truth". Is that how it goes? Well, the Taliban are very fun people, its just their treatment of women is a little backward. Come on man. I don't understand how continuing sexual harassment and assault (on two occasions) of Kira by the Negus can be construed as a "cute" B story. Ya'll were totally upset by a sliver of under boob, but no one bothers to comment on two instances of "grab em by the p***y" in this episode? What is going on here?

2024-06-10 22:58:30 +0000 UTCI was at a 7 for this episode so I was exactly in line with the audience rating. For me though, it has nothing to do with it being a Ferengi story Armin, but rather the plot just didn't draw me in. The morals and lessons were great and relevant, the acting was on point, and everything totally worked - plus we get introduced to the Dominion which will be important through the series finale - but for some reason I just wasn't engaged with the episode and I have no idea why.

2024-06-10 20:32:15 +0000 UTCI hope you can get David livingstone as a guest to review an episode with you one day because that's 2 episodes on the top of my head Armin has been able to get his thoughts on episodes he directed and I would love to hear from him in real time.

2024-06-10 19:13:31 +0000 UTCI forgot to vote, but I'd have given it a 9 which would have bumped it up the 6.9 to a low-mid seven probably.

2024-06-10 15:32:18 +0000 UTCWhat a feast this podcast was. I’m so glad they gave this a high rating. I loved the episode because it does what Star Trek does best: it studies a moral/social issue wrapped in a SciFi setting. The choice to have Dax be a buddy to Quark was inspired. It ups the value of both characters and allows insights we never would have gotten. The religious overtones on the gender issue were also very well done. It shows the depth of ‘programming’ in the Ferengi Society. They were previously treated as one-dimensional greedy villains. This episode showed so many layers! Note the emphasis is ‘profit’, which is not the same as greed. Kissing cousins, but different. Quark, IMO, was really made empathetic in the is episode. His life-view crumbles a bit as he is smart enough to see Pel’s value independent of gender. Quark is actually heroic in standing up for her! And all of this in a comedy episode. Brilliant episode and an insightful podcast. Thanks to Armin for getting the Livingston inputs. I wonder if some of those one-ers were to preserve his vision rather that letting someone else cut it up. If so, well played.

2024-06-10 12:20:54 +0000 UTCI think we should also point out the subtext that Dax was far less surprised by homosexuality than by meeting a Ferengi woman.

2024-06-10 10:52:12 +0000 UTCMy favourite ever males being attracted to what they thought were other males but turned out to be females was the episode with 'Bob' in Blackadder II with Rowan Atkinson. Comedy gold!!

2024-06-10 10:39:23 +0000 UTCDabo!! is a win. about the negotiations... it's Sisko's station. He has final word on everything. also it's not bribery Sisko does to Zek, It's extortion

2024-06-10 09:53:16 +0000 UTCOne of the most interesting episodes from Season 2... Loved the social themes and there were many great scenes (favorites include Pel's introduction, Jadzia Dax playing Tongo and Quark's climatic standing up for Pel in the climax. Also loved listening to Professor Shimerman's insight of this episode. Very sweet special appearance of Terry's puppy, Betty during the Prophets Questions segment. Always thought of Pel, the female Ferengi in this episode as the sci-fi amalgam of Viola from "Twelfth Night" and Mulan - two very strong women who disguised themselves as men to do extraordinary things. It would be great to have a "missing episode" of her returning to DS9 and reuniting with Quark. Pel’s story of disguising herself as a man also reminded me of a family history story about my great-grandmother Pauline (her real name was Natalizia). When she was a little girl, my great grandmother disguised herself as a boy so she could work in a factory, going so far as changing her name to Paul. Her parents were Italian immigrants and were very poor so she had to work to put food on the table. My personal rating is 7.2... a little above Armin's correctly assumed rating (but then, I'm a fan of the Ferengi episodes...)

2024-06-10 06:16:05 +0000 UTCTrue we won't see Pel again, but the character clearly inspired another female Ferengi we will see several times.
