As a fellow adult in their 50s, my travel habits have definately changed over the past several years.

Me neither. It shocked me when I first heard the idea

When I was in college, one of my roommates was an Asian guy who had been adopted by a white family when he was a baby. The tragic thing was that his family was racist against Asians. It definitely took a toll on him. He expressed to me that he didn’t understand how his family could say derogatory things against Asians in front of him when he was very obviously of Asian descent. His family’s rationalization was that he “wasn’t really Asian” in their minds because they had raised him not to be “Asian” and saw him as white. This episode always reminds me of him. I think it’s incredibly damaging to have grown up with that unrecognized (by his parents) adversity within his home. The dissonance within himself must be terrible. I hope he’s doing well now and has gotten a lot of therapy. Even worse, this wasn’t even that long ago. We both graduated in 2010.

I HAVE to share this 🤣 Please don’t judge me but I listen to these podcasts while I work out and shower. I put my phone on top of the bathroom cabinet while I shower. When I got out of the shower, I stood at the sink to apply my moisturiser and that’s when Garrett said “Excuse me, Sir” in the Oliver accent. It sounded like it came from a kid standing right next to me. My brain went straight to “GHOST!” and I screamed like a baby and threw myself against the wall. When I realised, I burst out laughing and am still laughing as I type this with my heart beating out of my chest! THANKS for that! 🤣🤣🤣

Thought it was the perfect resolution, in that it wasn’t perfect. Politics are complicated, Dukat’s consequence was that his plan didn’t work and the vale was lifted on his motives.

Constance

We are learning that Garak is way more resourceful than a standard tailor. I never read sexual tension off of Garak, always subterfuge and an underlying objective but never sexual.

Constance

They aren’t spreading rumors about Rugal. There is no reason for Keko to know that his parents hate cardassians. She is just being kind. The person Keko is being insensitive to is her husband, because she knows Miles had a tough time in the war and doesn’t have any love for Cardassians - and Keko is choosing a stranger over her husband.

Constance

Bashir wasn’t blasse- I think his facial expression in that moment sold that he knew he just dogged a bullet. I think he was very respectful. He lost himself for a moment and he got that Sisko gave him a pass. Watch his face again.

Constance

Garak is a meticulous tailor. They are focusing on making fun of the cardassian.

Constance

I remember a tng episode were O'Brien talked to a cardasian aid about his prejudice against cardasians. In the end they seemed to have a uneasy friendship. The other thing is about the hardships rugal had to put up with by being adopted. Let alone mixed species. I'm adopted myself and the most common question I got was did I hate my birth mom for giving me up or abandoning me. What a horrible thing to say to someone , and how could I be loved by them I wasn't loved because I wasn't there own blood. Looking back on it at times it almost seems like I was being talked into hating my birth mom. Or if I got angry it was because of the adoption and not being raised by my birth mom and dad. This happened through my childhood in the 70s and continued all through my life if I let someone know I was adopted. Not everyone would ask me that question but enough that I remember it. I hated those questions and assumptions then and today. I quickly learned not to bring it up because of that. I could only imagine what I would be like for a child in a mixed race adoption ( child one race parents another) especially in the 70s. I've since met my birth mom and found out I have 4 siblings. My mom and I have a great relationship and have a good one with my siblings. This episode takes place shortly after a brutal occupation. This child would have gone through horrible prejudice just because of the mixed species and that species occupied the planet. The episode did not address this enough for me. He seemed to adjusted for that kind of adoption and when this investigation took place. As for sisko taking him from the adopted parents so quickly I say yes being how bajorens felt about the cardasians. More should have been said about the custody arrangements at the end. And for those wondering about my adopted parents they raised me good. I always felt loved and they raised me like there own. I liked this episode because he got to find his father and family and got to see who his people really are.

David McMullen

They did show who Wesley Crushers father was twice in The Next Generation. Once in season 4 of TNG in the episode Family and the second time in season 7 in the last episode Wesley Crusher appears.

Christopher Collins

OMG I never thought about that before - she doesn't even get to say goodbye! Or are we meant to think that she's died? It's unclear.

Ria

I never paid much attention to the costumes as much as you all did in this review. I never noticed how it looked like the costume had mouse traps or iPhones on the costume.

Christopher Collins

So I’m wondering if there’s knowledge of Miles’ experience in the federation/Cardassian war from TNG. They dig out that his knowledge and reputation as a miracle worker (esp transporters) started during fierce ground, hand-to-hand battle against the cardassians. So his racism is a direct comparison to the hate you feel against an enemy after fighting them and watching them kill your friends standing next to and around you

Rob Salvaggio

Also, yes there was an actor who play Jack Crusher. I think there was an episode where Dr. crusher revealed she had a recording (like in a holodeck) that Jack had made for Wesley when he reached a certain age.

Jeffra

You must have mentioned Cliffs of Bole in Invasive Procedures review because I knew this! I’m pretty sure you did. :)

Jeffra

As far as adults not hearing children, sorry bro, the reasons dont matter, the pain is the same Anything else sounds like tryin to Justify tunnel vision Jmo

Tashicat

I call bs that noones a winner tho The orphanage is the winner because their computer works again ijs

Tashicat

The Garak/Garrett thing is hilarious I was literally thinking bout making that a Harrys Quarters question the next time he needs some LOLOLOLOL

Tashicat

Yes, 100%!! Who the freak is Sisko to have ANY authority over this family dynamic. Unless they commit a crime on the station, Sisko can go suck eggs. He should have called the Bajoran authorities, reported his concerns, and let them deal with it.

ST Fan CB

You can find out all about Garak and Ducat by reading Andrew Robinson’s book, A Stitch in Time…Garak’s backstory…Excellent!

ChrisB

Does anyone else worry about Armin and Terry inadvertently giving spoilers for characters and events in the series or is it just me? Lol. I mean, I'm sure Robbie and Garret can see where some characters will go but there's other major stuff that I hope gets to start a surprise for them. Either way, I'm about halfway through and it's already another fantastic episode. It's amazing how quickly all 4 of our talented hosts have developed such a fluid flow and chemistry together. Easily my favorite podcast of all time.

Wrestling With Gaming

I was surprised at how quickly Sisko took Rugal away from his adoptive father, all based on what one alien said. Also, I didn't think Starfleet would involve itself in family matters or have any authority regarding them. Wouldn't they have to get the Bajorans involved, and wouldn't there be some type of investigation before a child is removed from his parents? It did not make me think well of Sisko, Bashir, or Starfleet.

Sarah Ettritch

Oooo yayyy one of the best episodes

Kelly Bee (CaptainKathryn)

Yeah it was in Garrett's reaction shot I believe

Kelly Bee (CaptainKathryn)

I could have sworn that they indeed did talk about the "cliffs of Bole" line in the last podcast but did not hear it mentioned when I went back to that scene being discussed in the podcast. Perhaps it was in the bonus material as I did not go back and look at that. I was unsure about Terry when she first started on the podcast, but I am glad to say that I was 100% wrong. Terry is now my favorite of the 4 by a wide margin. I love how she continuously keeps the boys on their toes. Yes Terry, we can all add 4 and 8 as well so thank you! The racism displayed by O'Brien while not acceptable is understandable. In the ST:TNG Episode "The Wounded" S4:E12, it is revealed that O'Brien fought in the Federation/Cardassia War and saw many horrible war crimes committed by the Cardassians. Further, his use of the slur "Bloody Cardies" is again, not acceptable, but understandable. Despite what movies and tv tries to tell us, taking a human life is not that routine or easy. In order to help get troops to be willing to fight in a war, the other side must be dehumanized and the use of a racial or ethnic slur for the other side is part and parcel of that process. Coincidentally, Mark Alaimo guest starred in that TNG episode playing Gul Macet which is the first time we see the Cardassians. Bashir interrupting the convo between Sisko and Dukat is unfortunately, a continuing trope that exists in all incarnations of Star Trek. In every show, the Captain or whoever is talking with someone on the screen and some random jackass crew member interrupts the convo with their own questions or issues. Always extremely irritating when it happens. If someone in the US Military did that to their commanding officer it would not go over very well for them. Two things about Rugal staying with the O'Brien's that highlight why the Keiko character is not well liked. First, does Keiko routinely make make decisions regarding the family without consulting her partner? It seems that O'Brien should have been consulted about Rugal staying with them instead of ambushing O'Brien when he gets home. Even if she made the decision without him, she could have at least sent him a text about what to expect when he got home. Further, she is completely tone deaf about how he would react given his history with Cardassians in general. Second, did Keiko not get a situation briefing when she was asked to take the child in? If she did, she is again completely tone deaf in trying to shove Cardassian food down his throat when he has been raised to hate everything about Cardassia. It is not the fault of the actor that the character was written so poorly.

ST Fan CB

I need a gif of Terry "hair raising shit man!" LOL

Jared Christopher

Am I the only one who can't stop thinking of rugelach every time they say his name?

Tara

Watched "Cardassians" before watching the podcast last night. Loved the chemistry between Bashir and Garak in this complex and tragic episode. Wished they had a follow-up on Rugal and showed more Cardassian orphans interacting with the main cast in the DS9 series. My missing scene would include Kira and her seeming lack of interest in Rugal's parental dilemma (even though it is obvious that at this point in the series, she doesn't really care about Cardassians, adults or children.)

Nicole Brettell

Yay, Andy Robinson!!

Jenny

Probably not the best way to calm the nerves of the one whom Seska called "the young Ensign Kim" when she still cosplaying as a Bajoran.

Ja Dav

Yes, but to be fair it was Keiko who just a few episodes ago was willing to leave Bajor twisting in the winds of a potential reoccupation by Cardassia. It was Miles that said that that can't be permitted to happen.

Ja Dav

"The Best Is Yet to Come" are literally lyrics we'll hear Ben - and Avery - sing later on onscreen.

Ja Dav

The best part of the Voyager scene with Tom breaking into Harry's quarters and waking him up was his explanation that he learned lots of stuff in prison. LOL

MG

Just watching this intro and I totally see Robbie walking around his hotel room with a candle in one of those holders, in PJ's with one of those matching caps than hangs down past his shoulders.

MG

I thought it was weird there was no mention of Rugal's adopted mom/Proka's wife. Loved the podcast. Great nitpicking and I love it when you guys get sidetracked. It's hilarious and also often interesting. ❤️

Jan Hanford

Great podcast! You hit all my thoughts on Rugal. That was so sad. Deep Space 9 brings harsh reality to the screen. A lot. On to fun stuff: What a delight is Garak! “Plain, simple, Garak” indeed. And there is earnest Bashir, knowing he’s got to pursue this, knowing he’s being played. But Sisko nearly steals the episode with sarcasm, patience, and deft handling. He knows it’s a game set up by Dukat and he lets Bashir go off with Garak anyway. Their dynamic is delicious. But back to harshness of war… I think how you treat a child tells us so much about people. The Federation default is caring. To Cardassians ‘family is everything’ and yet orphans have ‘no status’. And the Bajorans are a good people but so scarred they encourage Rugal to reject his Cardassian heritage. That’s not healthy. I also find the difference between Garak and Gul Dukat dramatic. Garak’s first priority is to stop Gul Dukat. But he is genuinely gentle to the young orphan who asked if they are to be taken home. Dukat, OTOH, stole a man’s 4 year old child to use later as leverage. Disgusting. Finally, I wish we had more of a discussion on the gift that is Keiko. Sensible, caring, and completely willing to call her hubby out when he needs it. O’Brien married a fabulous woman and Rosalind Chao always brings a natural style that I appreciate. Again, loved the empathy oozing out of the podcast. You are MY people.

SnazzyO

Looking forward towards another DS9 review ❤️ just want to mention one thing: best to sandbag your ratings for many episodes, because....the best is yet to come, and so much of it, too. You'll probably need to expand your rating scale beyond 10...

Bigiorne

"The Wire" is later in this season...that would be a great one for Andrew to appear on the discussion for.

Ja Dav

Re: any stories of kids biting people, my older cousin bit me once. We were very young, probably 3 and 5 or 4 and 6, and I guess we were playing "Jaws" (as in the 1975 shark film) and he bit me.
