2024-06-03 17:58:43 +0000 UTCThe is a diplomatic situation; they are taking over the station but they are also trying to maintain a sense of legitimacy; so there is a reserve that both Sisko and Bajorians are utilizing to temper this delicate situation. That explained the imminent threat not being terror - there is danger of injury but the real threat is court-martial.

2024-06-03 17:44:29 +0000 UTCOdo is very young, he is a product of his up bringing just like everyone else and has been taught to champion humanity and human form - and he doesn’t experiment much with morphing that makes him look and feel different than the world he lives in. It’s not odd at all to me that Odo wouldn’t be jumping to creative shifting.
Constance
2024-06-03 17:38:51 +0000 UTCKira is at the most relaxed we have ever seen her - she is in her element, about to die, fighting against crazy odds - this is her normal. Her demeanor played really realistic to me and helped show me something about her character and history.

2024-06-03 17:34:40 +0000 UTCIn particular Bashir - we are still getting to know, and O’Brien doesn’t like him and thinks he’s weak, so giving Bashir some whoopspa allowed us to see he isn’t fragile, he’s a tough dude that can take orders and can put his actions where his beliefs are.

2024-05-20 23:39:33 +0000 UTCGarrett talks about "incomplete" uniforms appearing during his video watch but I'm pretty sure they just gave some of the extras TNG-style uniforms because they didn't have enough of the new ones to go around. The TNG uniforms didn't have the grey undershirts.

2024-05-18 19:35:57 +0000 UTCFor a couple of the nitpicks that were mentioned: In the scene when Kira wakes up in the monastery, Bareil explicitly says that her broken hip was mended, so that's why she could walk and wasn't in too much pain. In the scene when Sisko says that he's only concerned with the general on the station, it's not an error that he knew about Krim. First of all, they observed the "army" through the grate in a previous scene. Even if Sisko hadn't seen Krim at that time, it's completely possible that Odo had told him Krim was on the station. I don't mind nitpicks, but this podcast episode was extra-nitpicky and sometimes the nitpicks weren't actually there. :)

2024-05-18 01:59:40 +0000 UTCSomething tells me Armin will give a better rating to the other "The Siege..." episode of DS9 in season 7 which has higher stakes, tension, fear, bravery.

2024-05-15 02:56:03 +0000 UTCI have to say I am glad this was not a 4 parter. I don’t think these 3 parts work very well together unlike some parts in TNG, DS9 or Enterprise. I think the Best of Both Worlds to Family is probably one of my favorite unofficial 3 parters.

2024-05-15 00:50:14 +0000 UTCI agree that the Dax and Kira stuff is the strongest aspect of this episode as well as for me the strongest aspect of this 3 part episode and I wish there was more of that dynamic and seeing Bajorian culture and technology in the 3 parter.

2024-05-14 18:28:52 +0000 UTCThis 3-parter has always been among my fave DS9 episodes that I LOVE watching over and over. I think because I remember the excitement of watching it as a kid. Easy 10/10!! Now, watching this review and seeing all the plot holes, it does make me think “ohh.. that’s true.. that doesn’t make sense..” 😅 but I still rank these episodes in my top 10! 🤓

2024-05-14 02:47:27 +0000 UTCBecause Star Fleet told them to abandon their post and not resist. So keeping the shields up would be a direct disobedience of orders. Instead they stayed to ‘see to the full evacuation’. Thus stayed on board but didn’t officially resist. They did a wee bit of sabotage by turning off lights and sensors and confusing the Bajorian militia. With the proof in hand, however, Sisko had enough to justify a delaying tactic but he would have to avoid loss of life. Which he did. He may or may not mention taking prisoners to Star Fleet. His entire objective was to convince the General to slow down til the Provisional government had all the facts.
SnazzyO
2024-05-13 22:06:45 +0000 UTCTrue. You spend your life preparing for combat, you don’t run. Now Star Fleet is primarily an exploration organization but every officer and enlisted has been prepped for fighting.
SnazzyO
2024-05-13 22:02:59 +0000 UTCObviously, none of these guys has been in a military unit in a dire situation otherwise they would not be saying that people would cut and run. Further, RDM stating that "they are playing the hero instead of how real life is". How does he know what real life is in the military? Real life is that soldiers go where they are told they don't just leave because because the spouse is whining. Star Fleet does their job and does not run, just because things get a little rough. A runabout can hold about 40 people plus 3 crew. I'm pretty disappointed that there is not one non-human Starfleet member in the group that Sisko gives his speech too. Was the make-up dept short staffed during this production? Not even a Vulcan for crying out loud. Even though Sisko and company were still Star Fleet personnel, by taking off their uniforms and wearing civilian garb, they are signaling that what they are doing is on their own and not as part of Star Fleet. For a further example, see the ST: Insurrection Movie where Picard and company all have on civilian garb as they are not incompliance with Star Fleet (Corrupt Admiral) orders. The bad guys who cut off communication with Bajor are the same bad guys now in control of the station. Since they are the ones who cut off communication, logic dictates that they can now communicate if they want to by turning off whatever jammer they were using after taking over . A political officer here as with the old Soviet Union generally can do pretty much what they want since they report straight to the political apparatus. The military generally operates as it sees fit in purely military (tactical) matters, but can be overruled by the political officer. Also to clarify definitions here: treason and a coup are things against the government of a country. What Col Day is doing is a mutiny or simply disobeying orders. OMG, first of all, it was not Scotty that always said I'm not a whatever it was Dr. McCoy. This is WELL established in both Star Trek lore and pop culture in general. 2nd, as stated above, Bashir graduated Star Fleet Academy and thus took all the same training as other cadets. 3rd, there are combat medics in US Special Forces that I would not take on even with 5 other guys with me. "He's just a nurse" come on man. The massive army of 6 guys joke was funny until the 300th time. Stop beating a dead horse. Steven Weber must have gone to the Bill Shatner school of over acting. Those were some very projected lines. Leave it the religious fanatic Vedek Winn to scream "BLASPHEMY!!!". How could it be blasphemy as Kira had not even spoke yet. Apparently just having the temerity to enter the council chamber uninvited is blasphemy instead of trespassing or just being rude. I guess if you only have a hammer in your tool kit, then every problem looks like a nail...or blasphemy. Last but not least: Morn was NOT pumping his arm emphatically during Li Nala's speech at all whatsoever. He simply had his ticket in his left hand with his arm bent at the elbow with forearm horizontal to the ground where it stayed the entire time. The hand and forearm did move up and down slightly as it would normally.

2024-05-13 20:48:44 +0000 UTCI like ALL of what you say about this episode, Snazzy O. I would add that Garrett's "backward uniforms" were just zipped all the way up in front. Was it the costume designer in their interview who said that size of "V" opening corresponds to character rank/position/Personality?

2024-05-13 19:42:32 +0000 UTCI totally feel the lack of tension. The conversation of the last three Flyer eps makes me want to watch them again but they have never stuck and I think you guys are nailing down why.
Karen Chuplis
2024-05-13 19:37:20 +0000 UTCAmong all the other logical issues you guys pointed out, my problem is why didn't they just leave the station's shields up and prevent the assault craft from ever docking in the first place? I've always enjoyed this 3-part episode but there are a lot of strategic and tactical errors from a military standpoint.

2024-05-13 14:50:20 +0000 UTCDown the Rabbit hole of plot holes. Hypothesis - the number of plot holes you see is inversely proportional to your enjoyment of the episode. I think the fundamental issue with this episode was tone. If you wanted a serious episode, this was not it. This was closer to a ‘caper’ episode than war story. And that lens you choose, IMO, everything you see. So here’s my plot-onium to fill in the mentioned plot holes. 1) Civilian clothes was because it wasn’t Star Fleet sanctioned 2) ‘Superhero’ attitude was inline with the ‘caper’ vibe versus a war story. 3) Bajoran Assault Team Communications - portable relay thru assault vessels 4) Bashir still graduated from Star Fleet Academy, he has basic skills and leadership training. EMH was JUST a doctor that had to be cross trained. 5) Odo may not show up as an organic life form. He’s not silicon based but I don’t t think he’s carbon-based. 6) Yes, everyone should be ‘spam in a can’ in spacecraft crashes. Ignoring that, Kira’s broken hip could be a ‘simple’ fracture (versus ‘compound’ which would may broken the skin). And it’s only broken in the jungle scene. Limping later is post healing. 7) Sisko assumed ALL Bajorans would be horrified by Cardassian complicity. 8) Kira took off her costume because she was speaking as the military officer (as was Dax) AND it would be blasphemous in Kira’s mind to continue to wear robes of a Vedek. Suspension of Disbelief required: Odo physics. It will never make sense. They can do better but unless it’s vital to plot, I can ignore. Seeing behind the curtain: limited budget (paying great guest stars) than having enough Bajoraran troops. I’ll take the trade. Bonus: The long term impact is to show the commitment that all Station people have to DS9. The DS9 in-universe crew is a solid team with its own identity.

2024-05-13 05:28:28 +0000 UTC- The Great: ‘My Name is Li Nalas, perhaps you’ve heard of me.’ Chills. And his whole story with Sisko asking him to stand up and lead. So well done. - The Good: EVERY Captain/Commander has to fight this kind of hand to hand on his/her ship in Star Trek. This was a good one for Sisko - Bonus: Keiko as a military spouse - pitch perfect. - The Bad: The anti-climatic council scene. We needed a little more challenge to get into the room. - The Ugly: Quark scamming tickets for the last helicopter out of Saigon. NOT COOL. I enjoyed the episode. And of course loved the podcast. I’m so glad to have this rewatch with the Delta Flyers. And I’m caught up in realtime at last!

My birthday is on the 16th of May and Robbie and Garrett completely skipped it, maybe hopefully they'll mention it in the next podcast. 2024-05-13 04:47:53 +0000 UTCI think the reason they were in civilian clothes was that this wasn't officially sanctioned by Starfleet or done in their capacity as Starfleet officers, so they were removing everything Starfleet that they had on. It wasn't really anything to do with them trying to look Bajoran.
