The Delta Flyers - DS9 The Nagus 110 Video
Added 2024-02-12 05:00:05 +0000 UTCThe Delta Flyers is hosted by Garrett Wang, Robert Duncan McNeill, Terry Farrell & Armin Shimerman. In each podcast release they will recap and discuss an episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
This week’s episode is The Nagus, hosted by Garrett Wang, Robert Duncan McNeill, and Armin Shimerman.
The Nagus: The leader of the Ferengi, Grand Nagus Zek and his son Krax arrive at DS9. Quark and his brother, Rom are in awe and quickly arrange for everything Zek needs. Zek praises Quark's business instinct, but Quark fears for the worst; thinking Zek wants to take over his bar for free, and won't take no for an answer.

Maybe we never see that pet again because it belongs to whoever is Negas.

2024-12-09 12:15:32 +0000 UTCI appreciate this episode SO much more with all this background info. And I will never forget how awesome Sisko was as a Dad. Jake’s scene with Nog is a real tear up moment but it came from years of good parenting despite is grief over his wife.

2024-04-29 03:31:29 +0000 UTCI love that Garrett is wearing a Vegas Golden Knights cap! Love seeing fellow hockey fans! Dallas Stars fan here!

2024-03-14 21:15:35 +0000 UTCI wasn't a fan of "The Nagus" as well. I can't really say why, because there are really cool Ferengi episodes (I don't dislike them per se, there are really good ones) and I see the points of the gentleman (start of Nogs character arc, insight in Ferengi culture, good directing...) but I don't really like the character of Zek, although later on there are some interesting episodes in which he is also a part. In this episode I just found him annoying.

2024-02-27 07:25:59 +0000 UTCI thought it was also interesting hearing about the direction from David Livingston in this episode and insights he would have as a director that others would not have.
Christopher Collins
2024-02-23 11:43:40 +0000 UTCI thought it was interesting hearing what the Negas means in the Webster dictionary. I was unaware that it was real term either. I loved hearing Armin’s insights. I loved hearing how there was a cut with Grand Negas Zek looking directly into the camera saying the Klingons too.

2024-02-23 11:41:57 +0000 UTCReally? Amazing catch. I must go back and take a look. Thanks! I wonder what that was all about. Those little aliens were incredibly interesting.

2024-02-20 12:38:54 +0000 UTCThere are more than a few clunkers in the first two seasons, but there are some really amazing episodes too. The cast and writers really get it together really fast.

2024-02-15 04:14:17 +0000 UTC“Praying + Begging = Pegging” To quote another project of Wallace Shawn’s: “You keep using this word. I do not think it means what you think it means.”

2024-02-15 01:58:30 +0000 UTCEaster egg alert. At 8:28 while O'Brien is in the class room, a picture of the aliens that Kirk and Company encountered in the ST: TOS episode "Cats Paw" can be seen on the board behind O'Brien's left shoulder.

2024-02-14 23:20:55 +0000 UTCNagus = Nag Us I love the actors performance. The Nagus character seems to be meant to play on the annoyance of a super rich leader. I wonder if this was intentional.

2024-02-14 13:33:14 +0000 UTCI loved the Ferengi episodes! They were a dynamic and fascinating species.

2024-02-14 06:51:20 +0000 UTCI decided to watch this again and that creature is a Corvan Gilvo I think. We saw them in TNG in the episode “New Ground”.

2024-02-14 00:24:40 +0000 UTCI can’t wait until we get to the chopstick scene in season 7 “Faith, Treachery, and the Great River” to see Garrett’s reaction

2024-02-13 22:23:03 +0000 UTCI always assumed Robbie makes Rebecca read Garrett’s lines.

2024-02-13 20:38:15 +0000 UTCI’ve justified it as the combadges being “indexed” so the computer looks for that first. But to find a person takes the computer more resources and only some people can request that kind of search
Mars
2024-02-13 20:34:40 +0000 UTCHow does the computer locate Jake Sisko? Usually they leave their combadge if they don't want to be located.. Jake doesn't even have a badge..?

2024-02-13 20:19:17 +0000 UTCSuper impressed with Robbie spotting tiny details like Jake's shoes. I bought a pair of Blundstones ("Blunneys") based on recommendations from Adam Savage and his years on Mythbusters. Expensive, but super worth it. Comfortable and really well constructed. To be pedantic, I doubt the company "survived" into the future making those shoes, but I'm not surprised the replicator patterns would be that popular. :-D

2024-02-13 15:36:32 +0000 UTCFor some reason people seem to harshly judge the first three seasons, unfairly IMO. I hear the advice to new viewers to skip them and start with S4 and it’s just wrong IMO.

2024-02-13 15:01:09 +0000 UTCGarrett, you killed me with the "praying + begging = pegging" xD Robbie I'm so glad you said something haha!

2024-02-13 07:19:11 +0000 UTCI'm surprised by the audience rating too but I know that some fans just don't like ferengi episodes. I love the humor, heart, and world building for the ferengi in this episode. It's also a seminal episode for Nog and Jake's arc. So many great performances in this episode. This one is an 8.5 to 9.0 to me. Another great podcast episode. Love the insight and discussion. This is, I don't know, my 4th or 5th rewatch of some of these episodes and having Journey Through The Wormhole as a companion is making it as fun as the first. Thanks!

2024-02-13 07:06:18 +0000 UTCi loved the food discussion. I remember the first time i saw this episode and i went "but their teeth are so sharp! how are they eating bugs and maggots." So thank you for explaining that these are delicacies. Human teeth are not designed for caviar, either!

2024-02-13 01:45:54 +0000 UTCCould it be that the writers were thinking of the Ethiopian title ‘Negus’ - meaning king - when they wrote the Zek character?
Jeff Cameron
2024-02-12 23:27:18 +0000 UTCAnother fantastic episode all, thank you so much! Really enjoyed the behind the scenes stories about the make-up and wardrobe in particular. And yes I also cried at Jake teaching Nog to read <3 So sweet!

2024-02-12 19:16:01 +0000 UTChere you go robbie, read it carefully as the rules at the bottom might not be canon unless there from the book Armin sited "The Ferengi Rules of Acquisition" https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Rules_of_Acquisition

2024-02-12 17:44:14 +0000 UTCI watched the "Nagus" podcast discussion last night and really enjoyed it. I remembered Wallace Shawn (Grand Nagus Zek) for his film roles as Fizzini in "The Princess Bride", Mr. Gibson from "Kit Kitteridge: an American Girl Movie" and his voice over work for Pixar (Rex from the "Toy Story" franchise and Mr. Huph, Bob Parr/Mr. Incredible's boss at Insuricare from "The Incredibles") and I think he's incredibly versatile in his work as a character actor. Listening to Armin Shimerman talk about Wallace Shawn was very interesting and delightful, you can just hear how much Armin admires his Star Trek co-star. During the "Winners and Losers" segment, I agreed with Armin's thought that Krax was the "Loser" of this episode because we only see him in this episode and then he seemingly "blips" out of existence and is never heard from again. I thought that Krax had potential to become a possible rival to Quark and/or Rom (kind of like an Edmund-esque villain - in reference to Edmund, the villain from Shakespeare's King Lear).
Nicole Brettell
2024-02-12 16:48:12 +0000 UTCMy Haiku for "The Nagus" episode. The Grand Nagus Zek has arrived, Quark fears the worst, the selling of his career Plot twist afoot - Grand Nagus Zek names him successor Quark fancies himself the fianancial possessor Until he receives backhanded threats from every corner Zek's dead... or is he? Krax, tired of being in his father's shadow, wants to eliminate the competition - Quark! Krax persuaded Quark's brother Rom to join him in his assassination scheme Quark almost gets voted out of office via airlock untill... Plot Twist again, Zek's not dead! Quark's promotion was all a test For Krax, who failed... miserably. Nog is barred from hyoo-mon school by his elders Jake feels sorry for Nog Sisko thinks Jake is up to something he shouldn't be doing Until he sees Jake teaching Nog how to read Sisko lets Jake know how genuinely proud he is - Seeing his son become the caring man Sisko is certain he will become.

2024-02-12 16:09:46 +0000 UTCI really appreciate Armin's insights into the Ferengi. I've long thought the Ferengi were a stand-in for the merchant class (Indians in Africa; Chinese in Southeast Asia; Jews in Europe, etc) and it was nice to have that validated. When I first watched the show as a teenager, I admit to not really getting Quark's appeal but as an adult, I understand why that smoky eyed barkeep was so popular with the ladies! Really, really enjoying these episodes!

2024-02-12 16:05:26 +0000 UTCI did cry, just a bit, on both occasions. When Jake was teaching Nog and when Sisko had the tender moment with his son. I have a son who is 13 and it reminds me of raising him

2024-02-12 14:17:35 +0000 UTCyou don't need powerful pheromones for something to track you. Look at tracker dogs. they can find people over miles but us humans cant smell them even if they're close. it's a question of 'sensitivity'

2024-02-12 13:11:44 +0000 UTCYep the rules of acquisition started right here.

2024-02-12 12:49:29 +0000 UTCJust once I want to hear Armin say in Dominic Toretto's voice "la familiia"

J
2024-02-12 10:08:07 +0000 UTCI can't believe the low rating for this, it's such a great episode and I would be with Garrett and Robbie giving 8+ or even a 9.
J
2024-02-12 10:02:30 +0000 UTCI'd venture it's likely lowly rated due to the plot point concerning Rom trying to kill Quark, which they commented on as being poor during the podcast. It's a fairly out of character action compared to Rom's behavior in later episodes and how he's portrayed. That's to be expected in early episodes though before everything is fully fleshed out. I always liked the Ferengi episodes.

2024-02-12 09:30:49 +0000 UTCVery nice. :-)

2024-02-12 06:09:32 +0000 UTCIt's because it's an early Ferengi episode -- they will get better... MUCH better -- this one's good but just not great. It has great moments (Jake & Nog).

2024-02-12 05:55:26 +0000 UTCQuark gets a visit, from the one and only Grand Nagus He's worried Zek will take over, like the mob did in Vegas Oh, he doesn't have long to glower He's quickly given power But he loses it, so his tyranny won't plague us
